Newposts; their layout attractiveness and information
As official fansite we have the obligation to Aranenet to post all news on our website in order to keep the community up to date. However we have seen different sorts of bringing out news to the members. After long consideration we have however come to the conclusion that newsposts that just have been copied/pasted and submitted and then one line with a link is not the way we would like to see news submitted. The news is brought to the community by a person. Also the fact that you get rewarded 25 credits for a newspost has made us deciding to increase the standard for newsposts.
The Sister will make a standard newstemplate after he has returned from the booze, women & sun and returned to the dungeon where his shackles are already anticipating his return in a few weeks.
Until then i ask of people to let their own inspiration go free concerning news. This will also give us ideas on how people like to put news together and give us ideas on how to implement certain things into the templates.
Here are a few things we would like to see in newsposts:
- bring the news from your own personal perspective
- what could be expected? we are a fansite after all; a little bit of speculating would be nice to boost the discussion on matters.
- try to implement an image that refers to the newstopic. Make sure it doesnt exceed 200x200 pixels since there isnt much room on the frame. Like the factionpoints event; add an image of gunther for example.
- provide links to the original announcement (most of the time that is already done; but added just for the completeness of it).
- do not use quote anymore. Copy/Paste will not be approved anymore. Do however provide data like the date and source of the news etc. Those are required.
A good example of a newspost is GW:EN information overload posted by Tribina. It shows personal view, information and resources.
Newposts are rewarded by 25 credit; A little bit more work then has been done in the past will make the whole more appealing and fun to read and will benefit the comuunity as well.
Questions, ideas and suggestions are appreciated; but the standard however will go up. Mind however that news normally gets approved within a maximum of 2 days. If you have submitted and it does not meet the standards; you will get a PM; but due to the short time available to post news you will have to act fast. When you post first but it doesnt meet the requirements; you will get the time to adapt. So make sure to check your PM box from time to time! If it hasnt been resubmitted after one day; the next person who has posted the news will get his chance.

Very good plan, most, including AMP fanwebsites just do the routine CTRL+C & CTRL+V act and done, news updated.
It would be much better if not only the Copy act is done, but also some personal viewpoints and things are added, spices it up a bit.
I mean, lets be honest here, Guild Wars mainwebsite keeps it strict, which we are used to, but fanwebsites? Cmon.. i mean, ok, its for the ''community'' right? Its not an official website so the one posting the news can give his/her personal views on it too right? ;)
Official Guild Wars website started with this a few weeks ago, with the ''battle report'' thing about skills and all that.
Anyways, looking forward to see this idea happening.

I fully agree with ya maya!
Better work a bit for those credits instead of copy/past ^^
but:

This means also the little news items? Right now we have about 1 news post for every 5 news posts on gw.com
GAmeamp members tend to make topics about news and in that topic they include links, discussions start there, credits are given..
Now I noticed that the majority of members is satisfied with 10 creds by making a post with the news content which hits the site straight away, instead of making a news post and waiting a while until it's approved..
By the time the news comes on the front page, it's old news coz there's a few pages about it on the forums(if it's important).
Now there is no way to solve that I think, or anyway I cannot think of one...
But I'm all for the extended news posts! =)

As you say; it is hard to bypass that. The item has to be submitted and then an admin can approve it. Since Sister is off on holidays; i have taken that task upon me; in day time i have the site open for 8 hours straight; but in the evening i have a little gaming time ;p
However im looking into ways to improve this. Because as you say; it has happened a few times before that by the time the news got approved; it was old news. That can't and hopefully won't happen again :)
And up till now; we pretty much have every news from GuildWars.com on this site :) So we fully follow that rule for fansites :) They however do not state that the news has to be quoted; so we are free in bringing the news with our own view. The thing i do deem important is the source and date from where it was taken along with a facts of the news. So perhaps a quote of the news can come in place when it is very specific; but theres always room to make it a give it a tad more flavour :)

mmmmmmmmmm FLAVOUR!
Consider this a quick BUMP!
EDIT: One thing I've noticed is that I tend to overlook the news posts as they are so far down on the main page (i.e. a lot of scrolling). I'm wondering if it would make sense to promote them to a place of greater prominence. Just a thought.
Also, GuildWars.com has an RSS feed for its news items. Is there any way we could incorporate that into our site? Would they allow us to do that? Nudder thought...

I for one have never submitted news, since I thought only staffers or ex-staffers could do it? oh well, now I know better.
But when a newsposts is posted, it have to go through an approval, just like the guides? or is that wrong?

Maybe u could introduce some type of staffhood to some trusted members of our community for purely accepting these... like assistance for the admins that are doing it right now. Just an idea
