Experts: Video games not an addiction - CNN . com
My take on the article:
Some psychiatrists think that the symptoms of this so called addiction severely interferes with day to day necessities like working, showering, exercising, socializing or even eating. They say that working with this problem is no different than working with alcoholic patients with the same denial and inability to give it up.
To me its kinda like the gambling addiction that causes people to kill themselves over massive unpayable debts.
So this is their argument and the reason why it not been published in the diagnostic manual that the American Psychiatric Association uses is the simple fact of the lack of scientific evidence.
So its the American Psychiatric Association (and worldwide) vs. the Entertainment Software Association.
So they are going to review it to see if it can be established as an actual disorder when they publish the next diagnostic manual in 2012. If it does make it as an disorder like the gambling addiction and alcoholism, that opens the opportunity for government aid and disability.
Thoughts? Opinions?

Yea i heard about it here in Florida, its rediculous. They hate games so much but let worse things walk around like alchohol, Drugs and Porn. I mean come on....I gain more weight outside than i do playin games, i shower regularly i eat normally and all i do is play games. If they make it a disablity theyre only hurting themselves with funding

Actually they are suggesting that about 10% of all 'gamers' really have it and the rest are able to take it into moderation.
So they are talking about that, really.

Well, I personally feel that many times, people become 'addicted' to games much the same way they become addicted to other things: there is some underlying problem they are trying to cover up with a bandaid. Oftentimes people reach for the bottle when they become depressed or stressed, and I feel games can take the same kind of pressure off the mind. In moderation, it can be okay- who here hasn't come home from a nasty day at work or school and just wanted to kill randomly in AB?
The problem is, there ARE very unstable people who use the game as a replacement life. I remember this story a few years back about a guy in China who actually went to another player's house and murdered him for stealing his uber sword in game: News Story
I firmly believe that if you get frustrated or angered by the game, it's time to shut it off and go for a walk. In the end, nothing you gain on it matters as none of it is real (and by this I mean the virtual reality bit, not the friendships that can develop from it offline- I have several people I consider friends that I have known for years via online gameplay).
Are there people in need of mental health care who play online games? Yes, lord knows I have met quite a few (one woman's husband divorced her because she would not stop playing, another person I met was bedridden and disabled and was clearly suffering a mental breakdown because of it). But I honestly feel that you see people in every venue who suffer mental handicaps for one reason or another.
I think the key is: 1. Society making it a stigma to be recieving mental health care, 2. Society not making QUALITY mental health care more widely available, 3. Families and friends of victims not stepping up and intervening when a problem is noticed.
Too many times have people who were clearly in need of help have been left unattended, often to ghastly results.
To point the finger at an external object and blame it is just demonizing the vehicle, not actually solving the problem as to why people are unwell to begin with.
Just my opinion.

Dude, that's messed up! Some kid murdered another player over a sword!?
It reminds me of that one dude screaming at another guy on vent/teamspeak whatever saying that "he stole his effin' cloudsong"
Was that an EQ item? That was one game I actually didn't get around to play.

I dont think they were kids. Doesn't a number after a name indicate his/her age? it says so-and-so, 41, attack so-and-so _____.
Thats really messed up.

Actually, I was under the impression that they were of legal age in their country, but with a stupid childish act like that on both parts and stuff. They are kids as far as I'm concerned.

lol if you have a video game addiction we need to diagnose basketball addiction, football addiction, TV addiction, music addiction. Basically any form of entertainment could be considered an "addiction."

In the case of the guy killing another gamer over a sword factors have to be considered, the area people live in, some countries encourage the playing of video games because there isn't enough space to live let alone go outside and play sports, which means in these areas more time will be spent playing video games than anything else. A big factor into people becoming obsessed to the point it affects them in real life outside of the game.
Games like guild wars and world of warcraft promote teamwork and communication amongst players who want to seriously see everything the game has to offer. I Agree with Charlotte, treating video games as a hobbie which produces players that need medication will soon follow on with other hobbies getting the same result. That's two good things right there, teamwork and being able to use technology, i know that may sound bleak to some here, but im amazed when i learn some people don't even know how to use a mouse, it may just be me, but it makes my mind boggle.
A good example from where i live is that there isn't much to do, most of the kids hang around the streets causing trouble and if there is nothing better to do, video games offer a good alternative to enjoying something along with staying out of trouble.
If you have the drive to succeed and get anywhere in any video game, you will most likely play more often than other people, ala hardcore gamers but even these people know a balance and when to take breaks. To me this is the same as when somebody ends up commiting an atrocity such as the Virginia Tech shooting, video games were blamed then, but it turns out the shooter wasn't mentally stable, people with addictions need to take responsibility instead of scoiety always passing the buck and blaming their problems on hobbies, be it games, films or music.
End rant. ;)

From the perspective of mental health professionals and anyone in contact with addiction and its consequences classifying something as an addiction means that it is compulsive/habitual behaviour that interferes with and degrades the well being of the person who is addicted (and usualy those around them). Enjoying something and liking it alot is not necessarily an addiction :=)
| QUOTE | | The problem is, there ARE very unstable people who use the game as a replacement life |
I have to disagree there, you don't have to be unstable and looking for a replacement to life to become an addict, you could be slightly less than happy about your life and get seduced into addicition like a creeping malaise, there are so many factors that can contribute to addiction- social, cultural and financial. Addiction in itself is the illness, there are people who are addicted to all sorts of things beyond the obvious things like drugs and alcohol, it was bound to happen that compulsive game playing would become a serious problem . Alot of addictions start out from the initial 'buzz' of doing something and we all get a buzz out of game playing, right? Thats why we post here.
I doubt very much that game playing should become a serious target of the mental health professions as something we should not encourage, of course their will be those in the media looking to make some shock horror story about extreme cases, that happens all the time with the media, if it happens it will be short lived.
I think addiction is an important issue whatever way it manifests itself, I'm all for more information, realistic and honest debate about addiction. I hope we can learn more then hopefully prevent it and effectively treat those who are addicted.
The biggest trick is to know when enough is enough at the end of the day. If you arent in denial and your life isnt falling apart I think you should be ok playing GW :=)

Well I'd love to go outside But here a few weeks ago someone was walking down the sidewalk with their daughter, some puerto rican guy drives up, grabs the girl put a gun to her head. and tells the guy to give him his wallet, he didnt have his wallet on him and the guy shot him in the back, and today a women was breast feeding her baby in the house and some idiot did a drive by, now shes in the hospital with a bullet in her neck. now hmmm...should i stay in the safety of my home and be "addicted" to a game or go for a walk and get shot? its not games, its society when they clean that up and theres still problems then they can blame the entertainment.

Couldnt agree more, Ive worked with and known lots of addicts and those that have become addicted because of the need to escape their real lives do so to escape the nightmare that some people sadly end up living in, they have either failed in trying to escape or (more commonly) never felt they were good enough to escape from it in the first place (I'll avoid a little rant about class consciousness).

Why don't they just target something else to complain about?
Like say... why do we wear clothes? Whats the point? Maybe we're all just addicted to clothes. Who knows.

i like geek's view on the subject. But here is my own:
Gaming is awesome. sadly, like everything else, too much can cause a problem. People have very natural wants. They want to be stronger, smarter, faster, beautiful, the opposite gender, ect. Games provide that ability. How long do you think it would take to learn a spell like Meteor Shower, gotta be smart. And the warriors, usually (from my experiences in Rl w/ friends) are skinny kids who get picked on. In the game... untouchable.
Anyways back to my point.
Games provide the wants to people that they cannot see another way to achieve them. Most notice when they have had too much. Others take it to the extreme. Those people need to learn to play in MODERATION! I played for about 20hrs during the triple dye drop weekend earlier this year. doing that about 6-8hrs then some in two days. I don't get on and sit to play very long now. I have backed off and gotten back into my other games to try and keep everything interesting.
Ill edit this later... gotta go. All you can eat wings at Buffalo's!!

Honestly the word addiction is way to strong...I mean someone addicted to crack has the chemicals in his brain changed so that he HAS to have crack. HE ACTUALLY NEEDS IT. His body will go through some crap if he doesn't have it. If I didn't play guild wars for 20 years my body wouldn't cave in on itself. I would be sad yes. Maybe even depressed. Would my body tell me I actually need it? No. Thats why I think this addiction is no addiction at all. It is a replacement or an escape. Are drugs and alchohol a replacement an escape? Yes they are. The difference between the two is this. Drugs and alchohol actually CHANGE your brain to make it that you HAVE to have it. Thats why quitting either cold turkey is nearly impossible. Also you are addicted to drugs and alchohol for the rest of your life. You can not do them for 40 years but your still an addict. Your brain will still have that part that says "I need it." Video games? You can still paly video games in moderation after using them as an escape or release. You won't sudenly be swept in again necessarily. It can happen but it most likely wont. Why? Your brain asa whole does not constantly tell you "I don't want it I NEED it." Your telling yourself "I want it."

I've learned from another article that games have a chance of being able to be labelled "addictive".
Not in the direct way, but while gaming the brain makes a special kind of Hormon which I forgot the name, but amongst people specialized into addiction it is known as the Happy Hormone, in MMO's you get 3x the dose you get with a normal game since you don't have the feeling the game is gonna end.
This hormone is also produced when you take most Drugs such as XTC, Speed, ...
Now picture this, a casual gamer who has just come out off an addiction (which was a result of not feeling to good about himself) begins to play more mainstream. Now he's got the same addiction but just in another form!
I'm not saying this is the case with most gamers, but what I do think that gaming can be a problem for school, work, social life and such. But isn't the problem for the addiction in the first place IN MOST CASES.
Those 10% usually have been thrue horrifing experiences, having scrars across their arms and behinds because they played for so long in the same position.
Conclusion: Sorry for the long post, but I do think it was worth it and have mixed feelings about this.

You serious? She made you read that article? Geez... tell her that its not different than a gambling addiction or television addiction. Does that warrant the state to grant you disability?
Ask for her opinion after mentioning these comparisons.

Game addiction is an obsession... and I reckon that it must affect at least 10%... it had me for a while...
you act strangely, irritably when you have to leave the game, and you just have to have those 5 extra minutes...which add up to 1/2 an hour...

I'm not saying that games are a bad thing. I'm just saying that they are correct in diagnosing a condition..cos that's what it is.
Plus, you probably can become obsessed with playing other sports, however, since sports are active, and a huge, global thing, and exercise is seen as good, then obsession and skill at playing sports is actively encouraged...games are different...

I think theres a fine line between the two types of gamer persona.
the first is you want to play for an extra 5 minutes and it turns out to be 30 minutes, but no big deal you just lost track of time, or became goal orinated.
but the other side is a bad storm comes through and knocks out your power and you can't play video games, so you get into a rage, or depression. Or you can't start your day intill you get to the next level.
Well I guess theres three types... The third type is the person that farms till they drop dead like those Korean Gold farmers awhile back. but they were doing that because they got actual money not because the loved the game to bits.
Also the thing about killing people. see if a video game effects a person that badly then they really shouldn't be playing video games at all. Granted most of us think "geez if I had that meteor shower spell I could level the school" but most of us are mentaly stable enough to see wow that could end up being very bad for me.
The human mind is sometimes a wonderous things and sometimes the scariest reality you'll ever meet.

Sorry for double posting but I just rememebered this book, it might so a logical explaination for video game addiction. Its called the "Theory of Fun" and its a great book you should read it. But if your lazy I'll put my point out here.
In the book it talks about how your Brain. That you Brain produces, releases, and changes chemicals for simulis. And one "addictive" thing your Brain does is when you complete a goal or do something right it realses the chemicals that make you feel happy, proud, that feeling we all love of achievement.
But viedo games are all complete goals, so your brain gets use to producing thouse chemicals till the point where your body needs it everyday.
I kinda use to be hard on the kids in HS that had the 99.99% GPA, and when ever they would get like a 90% or below they would go into a semi-depression, but after reading this book I figured they were addictied to that chemical like how some gamers are.
But thats my rough throw out of an Idea.
