Helping Newer Players

OK i swear after this i won't make any new threads (maybe) just had to get this off my chest.

So I am putzing around with a new toon i made this morning and i see in the Broadcast someone asking if there was anyone out there who would help them Level. Immedeately the channel is spammed with "No PL'ing here!" "Go play another game fool" and other more unpleasant things. So i take the liberty of asking the player what they mean by "Helping them Level?" He/She is already on the defensive and blurts back a retort, now i understand why so i persist that i just want to know what they meant by their comment. they then explain to me that they just picked up the game yesterday and has never played an MMO before and saw the yellow words Level Up and then came to AP and doesn't understand what to do.

I completely understand where the "no PL'ing" comments come from and understand that this is a touchy subject for both sides and people with different opinions about it. But as a whole i am very disappointed in the community as a whole for jumping to conclusions and making some of the newer players feel like $#%#.

I can usually figure stuff out on my own, and if i can't i know enough to ask specific questions to find the answers. Not everyone in the world is like this so you might have to put forth a small bit of effort in order to get along, i know it is hard. Small bit of effort, like when someone new posts on these forums taking the time, like you guys already do, to say welcome to Game Amp (took me 2 secs to type that) makes all the difference.

So I ask that if someone asks an off the wall question that could be interpreted in a couple of different ways find out what they meant before spamming them with hate comments. If someone asks "Can someone help me Level" find out what they mean first. and if you can not play civil with others I implore you quit the game and go to www.disneychannel.com and they have some good games you can play that can help teach you how to get along with others, my 4 year old loves them.

that is all sorry just had to get that off my chest.

RE: Helping Newer Players

Yeah, it is sad that the snap responce to a new player was so rude. Generaly, I would have simply ignored the comment in broadcast because there are so many players that ask for power leveling 5 minutes after materializing in Atlas Park.

I feel bad for the newbie. It isn't their fault that so many asshats came before them. Some valid requests for help get lost because there are so many mooches out there.

It's comendable that you took the time to PM them and find out what their real question was. But then again, it's probably why you post here. You're one of "Those people"........ The helpful ones. >^__^<

I'll give you +cred just because I know you helped someone on the game, even though cred here is not what you are trying to accomplish. Good job. Your attitude makes your server a better place to game.

I agree with thundar here, both in what he said, and with giving credit where it is due.

Well done!

RE: Helping Newer Players

When ever possible I try to give clear and correct information to whomever asks. In this case the person could of asked the question differently to avoid unpleasant replies.
As a general rule I will not knowingly power level anyone for any reason. Just last night I was asked to join a team and after the invite I was asked to sidekick the team member so I checked to see what level he/she was. He was level 8 and I was level 36 so I quickly stated that I do not power level and left the team. I was a little upset that someone would have the nerve to leach off of me because they are to lazy to play the game the way it is meant.

It took me at least 2 months of in-game play before I realized that the chat bar expanded and there were channels used for different things.

Anytime someone would talk, I would have to turn and face them to read their chat bubble. And when they typed a lot, I had to read really fast before it disappeared!

I'd also hear the PM beep and wonder why I was beeping and how people could talk to dead teammates...

RE: Helping Newer Players

I played all the way to level 8 before I found out how to train up and pick more powers. Course, when I started, it was during the winter event of 2005, and everyone was busy getting presents. I got 3 powers at once, lol.

The only way to cut down on stupid questions (or at least questions that seem noobish) is to answer them, without sarcasm or venom. PM the people if you can, especially if they are asking in the help channel or on Request, or any other channel where more people have a chance to attack them.

There are a few people I have tried to help that preceded to
tell me how many 50's they had, even though their question suggested otherwise. After being told how great they were, I simply suggested they ask smarter questions next time and moved on.

No such thing as stupid questions, just stupid people who ask smart questions in a idiotic way. :D

that I will remember
I was lucky my son taught me the game, when he wasn't around I never talked to anyone and never responded to a tell , they may ask me something. It takes a while to hit a comfort level.
I always try to help , send a tell so the conversation stays off broadcast. I usually remind the newbie that we all started with a lvl 1 and to ignore the small players with big egos.
