I know that people like to mod their own files on the pc; and indeed it seems (theres a link on guru to the official statement) that A-net gives a slight window to do that; but this will result in one thing im afraid; and it concerns weapons (not the armour)
- people will mod already rare items to seemngly rarer items and sell them. Tbh; i think that giving that window to people has opened the floodgate for scams.
for reference: ->link to original post by Emily Diehl<-
| QUOTE | Thanks for being patient, Kurd! I've checked on this question for you, and I've been told that you would be permitted to try to use this program to mod your own GW client's textures if you'd like. Since this is a question that others may be curious about, I'll go into some more detail about it.
As a general rule of thumb, we don't mind if you do things like this to make your own playing experience more fun. Some people really like to mod, and we recognize that this can often be a valuable learning tool. When you're doing it, though, keep in mind that we ask that you don't use our content to mod other games. Please do not attempt to extract anything from your GW.dat with the intent to use it in a mod for another game or project. Also keep in mind that we can't support any changes you make. In other words, if you try to make some changes and your game crashes, don't contact support because there really isn't anything they will be able to do for you. Make sure you have your disks handy to reinstall :)
In case anyone was concerned about this reply, keep in mind that alterations that people make to their own .dat files will not affect the play experience of others. All of that important data is stored server side, so any changes that would be able to be made are purely cosmetic. For instance, if someone re-textures their sword to look like a gigantic pickle, they will be the only one to see this change. You won't start seeing people wielding pickle swords running around in random arena any time soon :)
Also keep in mind that we are always interested to see what stuff you guys come up with. If you do something exceptionally cool that you feel would really benefit the community as a whole, don't be afraid to let us know about it.
I hope this answers your question, Kurd, and thanks again for being patient with me as I tracked down the answer for you :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 17:57, 26 June 2007 (UTC) |
though i can already see the screenshots appearing stating 'uber 1337 weapon for sale; super rare! starting bid 1 mill.'

screenshots... actions require an image; that image is taken from your screen; thus with the modded texture. In that same topic they speak of an scam some time ago even... so it has been done before;

For instance. That is a known fake; but with the window open for modding more people will start doing things like that in order to gain something out of it.
I am not saying that it will happen; it could happen.

So you mean you can with the right stuff edit your chars and such in 3D?
Isn't it a bit like Jack McDaniel's ''Kryta Bomber'' video? He seems to have taken alot from GW's into his own design world for that, including ofcourse some mods... i still want to see that Jeep be dropped from a Titan.

Any modifications you make to your guild wars texture files will only be viewable on for your computer only. Others wont be able to view them since the files never leave your machine. It's more of a personal mod than anything.
I had a friend who edited the texture in Lineage 2 and made all the female Dark Elves topless... needless to say, he got pretty quiet on vent when he got to the dark elf capital... Creepy...

You dont need a 3D program at all!
I used photoshop for my editing, but you could do it with MS Paint really!
Read this and you will understand how its done, I learnt from there. :)

Do any of you remember the Terror Shield hoax?Check out the article on wiki.
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Terror_Shield
Just want to add that if people are smart enough to do their research before spending tons of money on some item that all of a sudden appears on the market or auctions, with a cool image, modded in the same way such as this, then scams will be less frequent. You just got to be on the look out and do your research before taking a huge risk like that.

First: Download TexMod (Just google it)
Creating a Mod
Open Texmod.
1. Click the big folder icon on the Target Application section and select Browse. Find your GuildWars folder and select your gw.exe.
2. Press "Logging Mode".
3. Select the options you want. I would advise you to keep "Show Texture on the upper left corner" and "Replace Texture (with a green texture)" on.
4. Select the Output format. If you plan to use transparency, extract as .png. Select the "Log with" button (Something that isn't bind to anything else e.g F8). By pressing this button Texmod will extract a texture.
5. Select a folder you can find easily as the "output folder". Press run.
6. We will start off with modding something easily like the "GuildWars Nightfall" logo.
Keep pressing "+" until you find it(Notice the selected texture becomes green) and press the "log with" key to export it.
7. Close Guildwars and go to the output folder, there should be a image and a TexMod.log file. Edit the image all you want but leave the .log file as it is.
I took the GW:EN logo from the official wiki and replaced the Nightfall one with it. Once you're done, save the image over the same file.
8. Go back to Texmod and press the "Package Build" button.
9. In the Definition File browse to the Output folder and select the TexMod.log file.
10. Enter your name and some comments (e.g. what you changed in the game).
12. Press Build. A new window will open up and ask you to specify a name, give it a name and press save.
13. The Build Status shows you the progress. If all goes well, you will see the Success! 1 Textures.
Now you have a .tpf file which is your mod. You can share it with others or just keep it to yourself.

I do remember the Terror Shield, all it did was have a few people try and find it... didn't take people long to realise it was a hoax.
With this tool I could change my Dead Sword into say Cloud's Sword from FFVII, but it would serve no purpose other than self gratification.... if I tried to sell it in-game, all the trade window would show is a plain old Dead Sword... cos that's all it would be to anyone that wasn't running my mod.
People trust their eyes in-game, I've seen hundreds of faked Photoshopped images... it never made me attempt to buy a Scimitar when I was after some new uber sword some guy posted a screenie of that he obviously editted.
---
My old Terror Shield remake, brings back memories of trying to discredit it originally...

I really enjoyed modding skins in CS:S (only with paint tho lol) but this looks cool at first..I even downloaded it...but then I thought...naw
reasons:
* If I can make my armour look how I like it gives me no motivation to go get that set of fow for my paragon.
* Guild Wars is already very versatile for skins on weapons, characters, armour and heros.
* I'll forget how items look...and not be motivated by good skins
* The UI for Guild Wars is already as good as I can think it could be. I couldn't change it (for the ebtter).
In short..although its exciting...it's not really something I could keep...

It'sut to make things look purdier... you change the GW file on your pc and that changes what you see...
Probably not the best of ideas..

You can't, you can only mod the armor you have on. If you were crazy at photoshop, you could make it kinda look like it, but probably not.
