Frost mage

So, I've started a mage and decided to go with the frost talent tree.

Here's the talent build I've picked out:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classe...013230310221541

Let me know what you think about it, and about frost mages in general.

P.S. I know I've got 10 points left. I don't have BC yet, so that's why.

RE: Frost mage

Nice setup. I can see why you go that way without the additional 10 points to spend.

This would be something that i would personally go with if i was doing frost without BC.

I am not very experienced when it comes to mages but i do know that as a frost mage you will most definately not need the mana reduction abilities of arcane, considering how cheap frost spells are (with the exclusion of blizzard). 'Shatter' plus 'Ice Shards' plus 'Frost Bite' is just plain evil, with a %50+ (this is raw without bonuses i may add) chance to critical against frozen targets coupled with double crit damage i fear frost mages in BG over fire (no offense Dru)

Also the CC (Crowd Control) of frost is superior to the others due to its inherent ability to slow or freeze targets in place making it ideal for taking out multiple targets with AoE. I believe there is a guide for "Frost Farming" mobs with roughly the same talents i used, but this was just my preference and not finite.

In the words of TP, i suppose its how you perceive your character. If you need the indescrimate destruction that comes natural to those of the flame (like Dru) go with fire. If you prefer a more arcaic and magical type go with arcane (though without BC you miss out on Arcane magics bonus spell Arcane Blast). Or as you mentioned you want the cold, wintery subversion that you get from Frost magic, you have already started :P

IMHO go with fire until level 25-30 because frost doesnt really gain any benefit from its talent tree until later.

RE: Frost mage

FROST HSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

Ok anyway if you MUST play a frost mage.... Ill give ya they have a bit of a CC advantage over moi...and a bit of a survivability advantage if in melee because of ice armor and ice mana shield.

Anyway I have written a ton of guides on mages if you want to look em up and browse. As for your build, its good the only thing Im missing is piercing ice, but you chose other things, I would get piercing ice and take the 1 point out of cone of cold, and 2 points out of imp frost bolt.

Reasoning? Every tick you take off your frost bolt REDUCES the +damage bonus you get on it!!!!! And for PvP which is why we all get our imp bolts you have ice lance, cone of cold, blizzard...things thare are instant. Id even consider taking out the other 2 points and putting them in Ice Floes...but I think it all depends on if that 20% reduction is REALLY worth it...I am not sure of the cooldown for those spells.

As for sephs build....get Imp Arcane missiles and Arcane Consentration if your goign to get ANYTHING in the arcane tree. Those are what you need, especially if your getting hit by mobs, players, etc.

That is kind of why I did what I did with the talents. The point is to freeze/slow them down so much that they never have a chance to hit me. As long as they can never get in range to hit, then it doesn't much matter how long it takes to kill them. I've always enjoyed playing crowd control more than straight DPS personally.

It's one thing to totally crush your opponent, it's another to frustrate the heck out of your opponent while they watch their hp slowly dwindle away to nothingness while they can't do a thing about it. I guess that's why I enjoy playing my affiction warlock. ;)

Anyway, I'll probably tweak it as that is my first go at putting points into a mage talent tree. Thanks for the pointers.

RE: Frost mage

I am a full frost mage at level 67, and that is a very nice build. You covered the Clearcasting which is a nice start, but when you get BC I would go with improving your frostbolt time so you crit more. The faster the hits the better you know. Also increase the % against frozen targets. At 66 you get Ice Lance which triples damage (normal damage is only 200-250) and with that talent it will critical around 1.6k to 1.8k with the gear and build I went.

Check out my website at -http://slacker6.info. PM me what ya think. I am fixing something new like everyday.
