Blaster Types

Hi guys,

ever since I started playing CoH, I've always played tanks. Love them, just love them. But now I wanted to try something different, so I thought I'd go to the other end of the scale and play a blaster. My question is this: What types of blaster are there?

See, with tanks, at one end of the scale you've got the pure agro tank build (focusing on taunts and damage resistance/defense) and on the other end you've got the Scrankers (focusing on high damage output). Of course, enhancements can be slotted such that the tank is neither of these two extremes but somewhere in the middle.

Bearing that in mind, is there a similar system with blasters? Does choosing different powers and enhancements result in different breeds of blasters? I hope I haven't phrased my question in a convoluted manner, and any help will be greatly appreciated.

RE: Blaster Types

Well, there is the straight-up ranged blaster. And there is the "blapper", a melee variation.

The ranged blaster stays out of melee as much as possible and just lobs in death from a distance.

Blappers get right in and fight next to the scrappers. /Elec and /Energy are the most popular secondaries for blappers. Primaries typically are one of the non weapon sets to avoid the weapon draw.

Path of Wrath - Storm/Elec/Elec Defender - 50
Miss Trinidad - Ill/Storm/Ice Controller - 50
Miss Cote d'Ivoire - Dark/Regen/Dark Scrapper - 50
Posey Punk - Grav/Kin/Stone Controller - 50
Mr. Azerbaijan - Kin/Psy Defender - 50
Laccolith - Earth/Rad Controller - 35
Geriatric Justice - Willpower/SS Tanker - 38

RE: Blaster Types

There are two scales for blaster.
Range vs melee
and
single taget vs AoE
and of course the blaster with a lot of control powers (Devices and Ice).
Range and single-target blaster are the play-it-save-types and the melee and AoE blasters are the thrill seeker, because you draw a lot of aggro and get yourself in the line of fire.

RE: Blaster Types

I'm more the play-it-save soloist, so I can only spreak for that part.
En/En works fine to keep foes away from you with all the knockback (which annoys all other players).
Ice/Ice has a lot of control, frozen foes don't attaack.=P
DPS isnt that great, but you slow your foes DPS down, long fights are good for them.
-/devices are pretty good for playing solo, because you need some time to set your traps and a lot of teams are rather the rush-in fighter, than the smartguys.

RE: Blaster Types

Keep in mind, they all have good DPS, they're Blasters.

Ice - Heavy on the Crowd Control.

Fire - Heavy on the AoE and Dots. Mostly DPS, low crowd control. Can be an aggro magnet.

Energy - Dual types of damage, High Single target DPS. Good melee for Blappers. Lot of Knockback in this set. Not always a favorite.

Electric - Balanced DPS and Crowd Control.

Sonic - Heavy on the Debuff secondary.

Archery - High Accuracy trade off for animation times on bow draw.

Assault Rifle - Lot of AoE and selections on how to dispense it. Could be Knockback heavy dependent upon some of those choices, but can be toned down to not be so bad. Good all around DPS.

Secondaries specificaly......

Energy and Electricity are generally prefered for PvP and Blappers because they have some of the best melee attacks. Fire coming in a close third.

Devices is great for the tricks, free stealth without having to use up a pool power selection and all around fun with the toys they give you, but you lose out on Build Up, which is kinda important to a DPS character like a Blaster. I still have an AR/DEV and love it, but I have to play him completely different than my other Blasters.

They are all soloable. It all boils down to play style.

The Knockback Blasters like AR and Energy will reduce your incoming DPS.
The Crowd Control Blasters like Ice and Electricity will keep things locked down.
I currently am soloing three different types, Elect/Elect, Fire/Energy and AR/DEV. It is nice to have time to set up my Trip Mines as teams rarely let you have the time to set up a good whammy field.

Although I really like my Elect/Elect, I'd have to say that Energy/Energy is the easiest to solo. Your missions won't have a lot of good AoE opportunities if you solo. At least not enough to make AoE attacks worthwhile. The single target devastation you get off of Energy is great for lower mob count missions. The dual DPS type (Energy/Smashing) also means that you will rarely have an enemy completely resistant to your DPS, where most of the other damage types are all one type, i.e. Energy, Fire, Cold........

As for team play, The non-Knockback Blasters are a little more team friendly for PUGS, but established SG's will know how to utilize Knockback in the right team formation.

RE: Blaster Types

Hmmm, I'm afraid with all the info you've all given me I'm still no closer to deciding what's better for team-play. I'm really stuck on this so any help would be great.

Pick the power sets that you enjoy the animations of. It doesn't really matter what you choose, they are all just fine for team play. There is no "Best for team play" any more than there is "Best Blaster".

It all boils down to the player, not the powers. Whether or not you are succsefull in teams is all on you, not the powers of your character.

*EDIT* Also, you just need to figure out what you like to do. Are you a DPS junkie or a control freak? Do you gaze longingly into a bonfire, yearn for skiing trips in the Alps or simply have been electrocuted enough times that you want to start dishing it out as opposed to recieving the voltage?

Pick the power sets that have attributes that you like. Animations and executions. No one is really going to be able to give you a straight up answer because it all boils down to playetyle and perferences. So you will very soon start getting "This combo is best" followed by, "No it isn't, THIS one is!".

You most likely won't be dropped from a team because you aren't a team built blaster. As long as you don't take all pool powers and secondary powers, you'll be gravy.

RE: Blaster Types

For most of my time in CoH, I've been a Scrapper. Nice to run around in Melee Range decimating Lieutenants and bosses, and one shotting Minions, (got to love Crits).

Just like you I wanted to try something different, but I love doing damage, so my logical choice was a blaster.

I went with NRG/NRG because I liked the powers and the animations are pretty quick, I even skipped the first power because it did minor Damage, (substituted it with The Sands of Mu).

As most people mentioned, NRG/NRG blasters can be annoying to some teams, because of the knockback. But AS I played, I learned how to direct my knockback in such a way that I'm not aggro-ing new mobs, and keeping the current mob on their backs, but in the right place. It's not always possible to do it, But with a triple slotted Hover for Flight Speed, I'm able to maneuver around mobs, helping to control the knockback.

By far, I found this kind of blaster to be easiest to solo. Enemies that are knocked down cannot attack, so once you knock them down on the first hit, two quick attacks later, and they are dead, thanks awesome Single Target DPS.

Every now and then a few enemies will get close, and you can just smack the hell out of them with Bone Crusher and total Focus. Add Build Up, Aim and Boost Range, and you can Solo and EB with ease. (I soloed Positron's TF yesterday in just over 3 hours, and Cortex went down like a girl).

Nova is your best friend in teams, add Hasten and a 6 slotted Nova with 3 for Damage and 3 for Recharge, and you'll be able to Nova often enough to keep your team smiling with you.

Just Hit Aim, Boost Range and the Build Up, Run in after a Tank or scrapper and BOOOOM! Big pile of dead Baddies.

Good luck blasting!!

CoH Rocks

Blasters kill everything, usually before they get killed themselves. When it comes to dealing pain, a blaster has no equal. We just have a hard time taking our own medicine! So we love Tanks and 'fenders!

RE: Blaster Types

And here's a nifty and amusing little trick I found with my /energy blaster. Take Air Superiority to lead into the flight pool and if you hit a boss with AS then the power thrust, you can keep him flipping and flopping all over the place. Try it! It's very entertaining.

Haahaha...

I can attest to it, I've seen big do it on his Sonic/NRG blaster... so very funny!
