| Compensation in the form of an Everquest 2 acct? |
|
|
|
I just checked my email, and sitting there was a message from SOE. They said that since I've had a Vanguard account and cancelled it, they're giving me a free 2 months on Everquest 2. So I did what they said and logged into my Station account, and sure enough, my account was active to play Everquest 2 until September 15th. Anyone else get a this message? Can't argue with free play on an MMO.
I've never played EQ2 before, but this looks like the perfect opportunity to try it out. All I have to do is go download and install it.

Sounds like a good deal.
Can you download the game without purchasing it through your Stations Players account though?
I always thought that was the hedge, you pay the price of 2 subs to sub to as many games as you want, but you would still need to purchase each game.
I.e. there used to be a trial island version of EQ2 you could play and from there install the whole game if you purchased the Digital Download. Anyway, have fun and wipe that Qenyos scum of your boots! :-)

Nope, don't have to pay for a thing. I get a free digital copy of EQ2 including the first 3 expansions and the first 3 adventure packs.
I downloaded the installer last night, and now I'm just waiting for it to finish updating. Last night it said 9 hours. This morning, it's telling me 45 hours. I'm on 6mbps cable internet. I'm beginning to wonder if it's even worth trying to download it all. Under normal circumstances, I can download about 1gb and hour, maybe a little more. Is SOE's network always this congested? Oh wait, it's down to 28 hours now. :/

So, they're effectively giving you the game + all three expansions? Hot dang!
I paid $100 for that in total.
40 for the game and 20 each for the expansions.
If I hadn't already paid for that I'd cancel my VG sub for this, then resub after getting the deal :-)
Doubt it'll apply to non Station Players account holders though. That's still tempting, but you need to play 3 games for it to become financially worth it, and I'm not that active :-)
Now, if all the games were free to DL like EQ2 just became, it'd be interesting again.

Well, I don't know if it's this way for everyone. The email kinda seemed like it was directed at people who've cancelled a Vanguard account recently, and never played EQ2 before. I don't think it's actually gone free free. I'll try to get the exact text from the email in a bit.

No need to copy paste.
They're already using this for their daily High Drama Fix over at the official forums:
Odd though. This text seems to apply to me more than BP. Someone who played EQ2, then VG, then cancelled.

Correction: I meant Station Access, the service to get access to many little played games by SOE, not Station Players the "pay for item databases that fan-sites host for free" feature.

Heya BP... free game time can't be beat! :-)
I think it's a good marketing strategy on SOE's part. VG is getting better but still needs some of its kinks straightened out and what better way to keep players around than to offer one of their polished games for free.
Edit: Forgot to mention, SOE's patcher seems to get bugged up at times. I've heard that if it gets stuck, it can be restarted and will pick up where it left off. Not sure if that applies to the download you're doing or not though.
In my opinion, the download is worth it, but then again I'm rather biased when it comes to EQ2. :-)

Yup. the launcher will sometimes hang when connection times out to often or too long. I'd really not consider that a bug on the launcher's part though as the root cause can be found in network infrastucture faillure, i.e. Zeh intraweb :-)
I'm actually quite impressed with the SOE launcher/patcher.
It's so far had the least amount of corrupted data compared with those of NCSoft, Turbine Cryptic and especially Mythic.
Grrrr. Who puts a download on http protocol through a flash application? Well, Mythic of course...
Anyhow, turns out that I can log in on my EQ2 account too.
Been checking out Neriak starting area, which is new for me.
I concur fully with Tyrlien concerning EQ2, now if only it had Vanguard's Classes, Crafting, Diplomacy and overall Beauty :-)

Well, so far I'm not impressed. I'm going on 3 days now trying to download this thing. I supposed it's to be expected though. Eveyone and their brother that got one of those in their email is probably trying to download and patch at the same time.
The good news is, when I left for work this morning, it had 3 hours left in patching. The bad news is, my wife told me yesterday morning that it said it only had 2 hours left...
Perhaps I'll get to try EQ2 out for the first time ever tonight. :)
*waves at Tyr* Hiya back!

So, maybe you don't want to hear about that server restart for maintenance (including patcher) that they just applied...?
Maybe the wive can rsetart the thing in an hour.

Telon sure is a beautiful place. If they got one thing right in that game that has to be #1. I like the crafting in EQ2 better, but that's just a personal preference. :-)
How's the patching going? If it's any consolation, once you get through the main install and patching follow-ups aren't that bad.

It's all done now. :)
So far, it seems rather similar to what Vanguard is, gameplay and all that I mean. I like it. I've made a Fae Conjourer and am lvl 6. It's pretty interesting how I seem to have gotten a new skill everytime I level up, and also that I automatically learn them. None of this running to the trainer business. The only thing I dislike so far, is that fact that I have to play on the extreme performace settings in order for it to be playable, but that's to be expected with a 5 year old PC.
There's still a lot of things to figure out, but I've got time. Right now, since I have time that I actually paid for in WoW, I'm still mainly playing that. But perhaps when it runs out, I'll take up EQ2 until that free time runs out.
I would have to say that my opinion of SOE had gone up a few notches, but I'm sure that's what they were shooting for to begin with. :)

Hehehe you are putting the egg before the chicken BP. Vanguard is similar to EQ2. *winks* That's why I could never figure out why people said it's "like WoW". *puzzled look*
I'm glad you like it though. Free game time of any kind is a good thing. Plus Fae's are fun!
I don't understand why you have to play it on Extreme Performance? My computer is 3-4 years old as well and I'm pretty sure I play on Balanced... omg now I have to check! :-)
