Check with ISP, they may have free stuff you can download.
I personally dont recommend using free software, theyre not aggressive enough to find everything. And Free Apps miss alot of stuff, but decent enough if you just play MMOs.
Remember its free for a reason and not necessarily because the developer is nice.

As the others have recommended, AVG does provide one of the better free Anti-Virus apps out there. I would also highly recommend their Anti-Spyware which I use almost daily in the course of my work. For additional protection I would also recommend occasionally running an online scan. My two recommendations for that would be Panda or Trend Micro (although Panda will not remove the infected files it does a nice thorough scan and can indicate potential problems). As was mentioned above, free scanners may not provide as good of protection as one that you must purchase, but then again NO single scanner on the market will catch everything. best of luck.
Signature is forthcoming, but as I am a Perfectionist (*translation: obsessive compulsive) it may be a while. This will have to do in the meantime.
