Taunt: For brutes or not?

I have a brute who I have at 16 right now and I am wondering, do I need taunt? I looked on the power forums and people are saying things that make it seem so useless.
So just if you know can you tell me? thx :)

RE: Taunt: For brutes or not?

This would be a personal decision.

There is the Brute, Brute and the Tank, Brute...

Since Brutes are not Tanks, they can't take damage like a Tank, so you'd have to watch the amount of aggro you attract (too much could overwhelm you).

Taunt can come in handy to help you attract mobs so you can keep your Fury bar active, but again, you'd need to watch the attention you're attracting.

I have a couple of Brutes and I don't use Taunt, but I have a Tank and I use it there.

What type of Brute do you want to build? That'll help give us an idea of whether you should consider taking it or not.

RE: Taunt: For brutes or not?

Depends. There are three possible scenarios, really:

Full-blown tank: If you want to do this, take Taunt. You'll need it to keep aggro, and to protect the squishies like Stalkers, Dominators, Corruptors and Masterminds. Basically everyone.

Tank/Solo hybrid: You may want to consider taking it now. Do you tank a lot in teams? Take it. It helps you keep aggro on top of your taunt aura, if you have one. You 'only' lose one power slot on it anyway.

Solo bastard: If you play like me, don't take it. If you find yourself soloing most of the time and not being specced for sole survival, don't take it. It'll only waste a power slot you can use for an offensive power.

Hope this helps.

*EDIT*: AAARGH BISHOP! You were SIX seconds ahead of me!

RE: Taunt: For brutes or not?

To answer Bishop, I would like to make a brute that is focused on dishig out damage more than taking it. I know pretty well what armors and moves I will get, other than taunt. I think I will skip taunt with this toon.

I was also wondering about Build Up. On forums people say you will be doing so much damage you won't need it. Is that true?

I took taunt at first but I ended up dropping it since I very rarely used it.

I find the extra acc helps sometimes, tho later in lvls you'll be hitting prety well by then. I also find it a good way to make up for the LACK of Fury when you 1st enter a fight, once your bar is full, you don't need to hit build up so much.

RE: Taunt: For brutes or not?

Long story short, imo Taunt is worthless. I have 4 brutes at the moment over level 35 and I have dropped it on all of them at respec. I am sure someone here can make a viable argument why you might want to keep it but when you get closer and closer to 50 with only so many powers to choose, it seems less and less worthwhile. Hope it helps, good luck.

RE: Taunt: For brutes or not?

As a secondary option you can take TP Foe, or if your build has a damage aura, you can slot it with 1 Enhance Taunt, that will keep the mobs attacking you even if they take damage from another source for a short time. I found this to be a better option all around with just 1 enhancement slot and Enhance Taunt. My Brute is Electric/Stone and has Mud-Pots. It works well because Mud-Pots also has a Slow Effect so they keep getting tagged by it and coming back for more.

RE: Taunt: For brutes or not?

I guess I'm in the Minority with this, but I picked up Taunt way before I got my Taunt Aura. As a SS/Stone, I know that I'm gonna be tanking the mobs, and truth be told, I End crash real fast if I'm using Mud Pots. The cost on Taunt is next to nothing, and with Granite, I have enough time to use it while my attacks are recharging. In addition, when I run the LRSF, I'm spamming Taunt like crazy, otherwise one of the Heroes runs off and pounds one of the squishies. It also gives me a way to get aggro back after someone gets out of Melee range, which I can't do in any other way.

Nine of the five voices in my head say I'm not insane. Majority rules!

Esh, 50 Merc/Dark MM
Onyx Slate, 50 Super Strength/Stone Brute
Endothermite, 50 Ice/Energy Blaster
Azure Barrage, 50 Empath/Electricity Defender
Tarvitz, 50 Spine/Regen Scrapper
Fatal Fealty, 50 Super Strength/Willpower Brute
Lord Tarvitz, 39 Broadsword/Reflexes Scrapper

RE: Taunt: For brutes or not?

Taunt depends on how your character is built. If you find that you have good resistance/defense and could take on two mobs at once to get that extra fury, then Taunt might come in handy. However most of the other Brute Primary Attacks have taunt built into it, so it's not really needed.

RE: Taunt: For brutes or not?

Pretty much I would advise against taunt, at least untill the higher levels prehapse when you have your Uber shielding to save your neck. Taunt at lower levels generally means you will be swarmed and squished unless you have some good healers about, but hey this aint CoH generally us villains dont team as much (on the euro servers anyways) so i see little need for taunt on a team perspective. Solo wise, well why do you need a taunt, it waste time really since your gonig to run into them anyway, and if your soloing who else are they going to target?

DANCE WITH DARKNESS!

CoH

Dharkarai - Lvl 16 Katana/Willpower Scrapper

CoV

Hellmeister - Lvl 35 Fire/Dark Cor
Stonestrike - Lvl 34 Super strenght/Stone Brute (current main toon)

And I know a million people are going to jump on me for this, but CoV does not have a healer class. Not like those helpfull save the kitten mama boy heroes do atleast. Just because they can heal, does not mean they are good at it. After if they aren't good at it, you will die.

RE: Taunt: For brutes or not?

To me healing depends on the person playing the healer. I think a Thermal Rad healer could do just fine. I've played one, but I don't like healing very much in this game. Which is odd, because that's all I've ever played in any MMO.

Empathy has more tricks and a few extra buffs. But, I think the Them Rad set is pretty interesting. Obviously you can't have a strictly healing/buffing healer running around as a villain, that just doesn't make a whole lot of sense, so they padded the heal set with some pretty nasty debuffs to give your group the edge while keeping them alive.

But it's all perspective I suppose.
