Invuln/SS noob tank needs help!

Ok so I just started playing CoH about a week ago. After playing around with the different Archtypes, I finally decided to make a hero with the classic super powers(Invuln, SS, Fly, Speed). Not really original, but I like to kick it old school :)

So I came up with a build. Now I know if this doesnt work I can respec later, but I want to get it as close as I can on the first go round. So here it is, tell me if it sucks, what I should change or add to it or whatever.

1) Resist Physical Damage and Jab
2)Punch
3)Slot Punch and Jab
4)Temp Invuln.
5)Slot R. Physical Damage and Temp Invuln.
6)Hover
7)Slot Punch and Jab
8)Dull Pain
9)Slot R. Physical and Jab
10)Unyielding
11)Slot Unyielding x2
12)Haymaker
13)Slot Haymaker and Punch
14)Fly
15)Slot Fly x2
16)Resist Elements
17Slot R. Elements x2
18)Resist Energies
19)Slot R.Energies x2
20)Invincibility
21)Slot Invinc. x2
22)Taunt
23)Slot Jab and Punch
24)KO Blow
25)Slot KO Blow x2
26)Swift or Hurdle?
27)Slot Unyielding and Flight
28)Health
29)Slot KO blow and Haymaker
30)Stamina
31)Slot Stamina x2
32)Tough Hide
33)Slot Tough Hide x2 and Punch
34)Slot Jab, Stamina, Invinc.
35)Hasten
36)Slot Hasten x2
37)Slot KO Blow, Flight, R.Physical D
38)Hurl
39)Slot Hurl x3
40)Slot ???
41)Foot Stomp
42)Slot Foot Stomp x3
43)Slot ???
44)Speed

And if anyone has any advice about slotting and enhancements, I would love to hear it.

RE: Invuln/SS noob tank needs help!

Welcome to Gameamp, Phunkie! I hope you enjoy your stay!

I'd try and fit health/stamina in your build earlier. Stamina makes a world of difference with tanks because we run so many toggles at once.

There are others who can give great opinions of the Invul set. I still have yet to play it extensively.

RE: Invuln/SS noob tank needs help!

First let me Welcome you to GA, Phunkie. A little about me..Ive been a life long CoH tank(lvl 50 stone/ss, lvl 50 ice/ice, lvl 50 fire/EM, lvl 38 ice/fire, and lvl 28 stone/stone tanks).

Now your plan looks good...but let me say, teams will be expecting you to hold aggro 100% of the time or your rep will suffer. I strongly suggest taking taunt ASAP at level 10. Then you get another taunt/aggro magnet at 18 (invincibility- 2 taunt, 3 def, 1 to hit).
And the way invincibility taunts, it makes it extremely easy to herd a mob to their demise. So taking this aspect in mind..I also suggest taking Rage instead of resist energy and taking your pbAoE at 32. Of course this is coming from a career herder...Every thing else looks fine..Just remember to have fun with it. GL.

One Love!

Welcome to GA! It all depends on what you'll want to do with the tank, team or solo. If you're a team guy you'll want defense and more defense to absorb the punishment. I agree with Bigspeer on the Stamina thing, the earlier the better on a tank. As a team tank you'll only need the bare bones for attacks for awhile, other than that your job will be to taunt and hold that aggro and SS attacks come up quick enough for that.

If you plan on the solo route go with a balance of offense and defense with Swift/hurdle(your choice) Health and Stamina as early as possible. I've personally gone along pretty easily solo with only the barest minimum of teaming and gotten to 43 with my SS/Inv tank. If you want any help in game gimme a shout @Deadman54, I'm on in the evenings after 6 EST. Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Welcome to Gameamp! Well here is a guide that you could use, but don't feel that you have to follow every detail in it. I used a hero designer, these let you build up a hero/villain without actually leveling them, allowing you to see the effects and stuff of that build. Well enough talk, here's the build:

RE: Invuln/SS noob tank needs help!

One thing I might suggest is to take air superiority instead of hover. As an invul tank, you'll be running unyielding, which provides resistance to knockback and knockup, so there would be no need for those stats provided by hover. Air superiority is a pretty decent attack as far as dmg and knockdown (though a bit end costly) but I think that would give you one more attack to fill out an early chain. Like was previously stated, stamina early will really only be a necessity for solo play (although with a 50 em you prolly know all about that). Invulnerables are tanks thru and thru, so any PbAoE you can get is going to really spice things up.

Hover can come in handy for an Invul Tank. I have a Invul/SS tank and have 3 slotted Hover. Why you ask??? I don't like caltrops and anything that slows me and my attacks down. I like to Hover above those pesky little things and continue doing damage.

Well, the main reason I had it was when farming in the Chimera mission was popular...those little ingrates always seemed to mount up a decent amount of caltrops in one pile and without Hover, I was just standing there taking unnecessary damage and not being able to move.

Hover is good to have, if used properly. 3 slot it with fly enhancements and you'll be squared away.

I agree. I would put off the fitness pools and get haymaker and taunt earlier. You have the benefit as a inv/ss tanks that many of your defenses don't take stanima so early. Besides, if you run low just stand there in the fight and let them beat on you while you recharge...this tanker can do that. Also, you'll be a better tank team player having taunt early on. People expect you to be able to get the enemy hearded to you. For an attack chain I normally use:

-knockout blow
-air superiority
-haymaker
-jab

Of course when Stan XX gets footstomp that will be my opener since it gets everyone's attention. I also recommend the fire set. Fireball is just too inviting for a tank because now you can aggro a crowd at range which is a beautiful thing.

Good luck.

Randy

RE: Invuln/SS noob tank needs help!

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. This forums a lot more friendly then others that I've been on.

So I should Stamina earlier. I was thinking I probably should but I wasn't sure how much it actually helps. Now I can see it's pretty important so I'll pick it soon. I'm already at level 9 so it's a little late to pick up air superiority :P. I'll also pick up taunt as early as possible after I get stamina. Thanks for the advice.

Btw, is avoiding rage, unstoppable, and hand clap ok. None of these look really useful but then again I'm just a poor noob.

Take rage and unstoppable immediately upon availability!

You can actually put off a travel power until later in life because you can get temp travel powers from Safeguard missions that last a while.

I believe I used my two until I got to 30 on one toon.

RE: Invuln/SS noob tank needs help!

I completely agree with Big. I didn't take rage until I respec'd in my early 30s and wow would that have been nice earlier. I still haven't take hasten. I took stamina at 24 and I was pretty good with that. Hand clap...nice aggro magnet, but I'd wait until foot stomp. When you get a chance to respec definitely trade out hover for air superiority though. It's nice to keep the bad guys off of their feet.

Invul is an awsome primary...especially when you start getting high enough to max out your defensive powers and use SOs. Stan XX was my first character and I've had a blast with him. It's great standing in the middle of a group of baddies and taking very little damage. Plus, if I remember right invul builds get a hit point bonus.

I took Rage....a must have! Unstoppable...I didn't take and I tanked just fine (you can add it). Hand Clap, to me...total waste of space, time, effort.

But Rage definitely is a must have. Unstoppable, I was proving a point when i didn't take it, and I made my point and there was no need to add it after the fact, so I left it off.

This build is pretty straightforward, with both Flight and Super Speed as per your request. I set it up so that you'll have Stamina available to you as soon as possible, because even with liberal slotting of endurance reductions, tanks do tend to have more downtime before Stamina is available to them. This being your first run through, it would be prudent to have the best available build possible. That is what I have tried to do.

A side note: This build is also well designed to take certain Invention sets that I had in mind while working it up. If you would like, please feel free to send me a Private Message, and I'd be glad to give you the build using Sets that I had in mind while working on this.

Hope you enjoy the game, and welcome to Paragon City!

Warron Peace
