MMO's have been around for awhile now and though in life I have come to accept that other folks have my same real life name what they heck are they doing choosing my favorite toon names ahead of me in game. Why Colewin came about because I loved the name Corwin but always found it taken in games. Now from time to time I hear rumblings about services being offered in the future where you could register or reserve a toon name; so what do you all think about all this?

I know, I hate it when name's get stolen. >.<
This is in WoW but when I come up with a good name, I create a lvl 1 toon with the name and create those toons on different servers to reserver my name in case I want to reroll some day. that way I'll have my name in my new home. <3

I haven't encountered not getting my chosen name so far in an online game. It is a name I made up some years ago and rarely ran into any variations of it up until the last year or so. But, if I was to lose it because of a server merge, or if I was not able to get it in a game on creating a character sure I would be diappointed, but not to the point that I would consider reserving it.
There are lots of ways to alter a name in an insignificant way (adding an H as a silent letter in the name or putting a duplicate letter on the end of a name, for a couple examples).
I'd like to see game developers use first and last name combinations in games as a solution to having characters with the same first names in a game. As Mikey pointed out names are shared in RL, why not in games as well.
For now though I'll continue identifying Tyrlien as being in EQ2 - Butcherblock server, or Tyrlien in Vanguard - Hilsbury server. That's one thing I love about the avatar listings in my GameAmp profile's Game History!

lol first and last names would be fun, I always use Drucila Bing...and my friends tell me it sounds like a stripper name, why do you think my myspace is DrucilaB? lol...
But yeah ya know the way to get around someone having your name? Beta it and be the first on the server! HA! LoL...ok I know not everyone can do that but then I just threaten with WRATH OF DOOOOOMMMMM!!! And make them give me my name back! BIOTCH!
