My Illusion/radiation recently hit level 41 after a painful grind from level 40 due to terrible and lack of teams. I have a delima I can't decide on what powerpool to take. They all seem pretty cool. I am leaning toward Primal forces, Fire mastery, Earth mastery, and Psi mastery.
The ones on the top of my list are Fire mastery and Earth mastery because they have a nice assortment of attacks and some defnse but do not really go with my character's AT in my opinion.
Primal Forces and Psi mastery seem usefull and go with my AT since phantasm is an energy blaster and illusions are tricks on the mind. It is just that they seem to be geared towards defense rather than offense.

Hummm,
I took Psi at 41 with my Ill/Empath and by 45th had /respec to Fire. I thought that Psi would protect me from all the AV psi powers, it didn't. The best defense is a good offense, so take the offensive powers. They can't use their Psi powers on you if they are dead.

I also prefer to go with offensive powers on my Ill/emp. Personally, i would recommend the Ice Mastery pool (or whatever its called). I think this is an excellent choice, for a few reasons;
Ice Bolt(or blast :S)
Hibernate
Ice Storm
?(damn, i cant remember! its an attack i believe)
First, Ice bolt is a nice attack ,and its different damage than your regular Illusions. It also falls under containment :) Blind->SW->Ice Bolt.
Hibernate is a very good self heal in trouble, and your pets can still do there thing.
Ice storm is excellent damage
and the last one... damn i cant remember.
Anyways, ice has a bit of everything, thats why i like it. You get a nice defensive balance with Hibernate, yet nice damage(which is what you want) both single target and aoe.
