| HELP!! my pc smells weird :| |

okay here's the story:
i was sitting in my room, window open, hot weather. and then i smelled BBQ :D
so i went outside asking if we were bbq'ing....no was the answer. so i got back in my room, smelled my pc, and it smelled like it was burning or something. Then i got on GW (everything was still working fine) and asked a guildie, he said: it may be some dust that came in to the power supply of the pc and is heating up.
Now my stepdad says: DON'T U DARE 2 OPEN THE PC!!! or else the warranty fails....
so i'm stuck here now, with a smelly computer, don't exactly know what the smell could be, and a nagging stepdad.
(everything still works fine, i checked the temperature of the pc, it was normal)

unless theres a seal on the side or back, opening it isnt gonna void anything...

^I have to agree, unless it says other wise its ok(by law)
But if you dont know or have any experince with hardware dont tuch it! IF you HAVE to try somehing.
Get a vacumecleaner and reverse it, so it blow air instead of sucktion. clean all places u can get to.remember IF u have to open or remover cover Turn off you system , and pull the power plug.
edit: Take a pen or pencel and hold the valve of the air cooler still while cleaning.(so it dont rotate)
or the lazy version buy a airfreshner .

I've opened the pc and taken the dust out of there. Once some virus they told me actually destroyerd mother board etc so gladly i had insurance till next xmas so i got it for the cost of benzin needed for the car to get the pc into "ASAP" store where they fixed it.
I think it said when i opened it something that if u open the fan thingy it loses the value not sure.

hey there, i just bought a new power supply. I want to thank everyone for the help, but when i was in the middle of a mission in GW my pc exploded, it was like: BOOM!! i looked at my pc, and i saw a huge spark coming out of the back of pc. But luckily for me it was only the power supply that exploded, so everything and everyone is still intact ^^
1 small tip, NEVER go further with the computer if it has a burning smell over it ;)

Try the compressed air, turn off the pc, d/c it from the power supply for a while, just to let it cool down....

Prefix - I am a computer tech by profession, with that in mind take it for what itès worth
1. opening your computer will not void your warranty (at 99% of places) UNLESS u break something while in there.. if you dont 1. likely they will never know 2. they wont care
2. Open up the computer and check the capacitors on the motherboard.... see if any of them are leaking (metalic brown stuff coming off the top)... if so, turn off your computer immediatly and take it in to get fixed or order a new motherboard for it
3. if capacitors are fine take a good whif see which part the smell is coming from... if its not the capacitors, its likely the power supply giving out in which case take the computer in for warranty work or buy a psu and put it in
if none of the above work, take it in for repair... you dont want to leave a computer with that smell running, you ll get a big i told you so from me if you happen to burn your house down :)
