Devices vs. Buildup

I am looking at making a fire blaster (a primary with good damage) and was debating over which secondary to get. devices is stuffed full of cool looking powers but lacks build up. i was wondering if my damage dealing as a blaster would be severely crippled if i did not take build up. the other primary i would like to make is Ice, but i though that ice/dev would have way too low damage output (ice being low dammage..right?). ok, i am ready, throw your insults and advice at me. thanks

RE: Devices vs. Buildup

Devices is just a different kind of dmg dealer... a very burst type of dmg. With trip mine a group of enemies goes down faster that a fire/fire would with buildup. Its also a stealth based set so prepare to combo superspeed with the stealth power in the set. Also, with the targeting drone you have increased perception and need less accuracy enh in you powers which allows more liberal slotting. I haven't tried time bomb yet but a fire/devices blaster is definitely a good combo. In fact, based on my experience with devices, fire is the only primary i would choose based on the synergy with AoE goodness.

RE: Devices vs. Buildup

Build up is a straight forward power for all damage dealer types.
Devices is more a swiss army knife with a access to a lot of problemsolving tools.

RE: Devices vs. Buildup

Like Sturm said, Build-up is pretty straight forward when it comes to strategy. Devices requires a bit planning to make the most of the set. If your starting out and unsure of which secondary to take, make two charecters and see which fits your playstyle.

On a side note, I recommend either Energy manipulation or Electric Manupulation for starting out. Both are really straight forward and offer supurb damg output with good secondary effects

RE: Devices vs. Buildup

My vote is Fire/Energy for a starter player. Devices is very tricky, and tends to favor the slower solo player.

As for Build Up, it isn't needed, though I'd advise taking it to anyone who has it available. Fire Blast has Aim, so even if you went /devices, you'd still have a little bit of a damage buff and a nice tohit buff. It's all a matter of playstyle. Personally, I tend to forget I have Build Up/Aim on my fire/fire blaster. I haven't played him consistently for a very long time, so when he does come out of retirement, I'm usually not in a situation where Build Up or Aim are very much needed.

RE: Devices vs. Buildup

I've been doing a electric/devices blaster and I love it. Targeting drone makes the set well worth it since all your attacks benefit from the extra to hit. That makes it so you can more creatively slot your attack powers by using end reduction or range enhancement without worrying about being able to hit.

Good guide, inspired me to make a Fire/Devices last week and she is fun to play especially when you Trop a large group then rain of fire and watch as they TRY as hard as they can to run away. Haven't got up to any of the mines bombs and stuff yet but very cool.

How new to the game are you? I noticed the amount of posts you have on this one and the other one, but that doesn't neccessarily mean you haven't been playing for a while. I played for almost a year before actually making an account on the GA.

Any who if you are fairly new to the game i.e. still learning some of the strategies for each AT and stuff then i would say go with the previously mentioned sets like Fire/NRG or Fire/Fire or NRG/NRG. Devices as also mentioned is a bit tricky and you will have to change the strategy up a bit to be successful (just a little)

And ice is not like lowest dmg per say but it isn't the best dmg out of the blaster sets by any means, it is a more controller-esque type set. My wife runs an Ice/Ice on Liberty and she does fairly well with her, I don't consider it the lowest because the dmg type is not really resisted by the enemies like ever, so that helps (lol guess the NPC's are like the rest of us and skip that auto elemental resist thingy) In comparison i would go through my entire atk chain with my Fire/Fire and the whole room most likely is down, My wife's Blaster on the other hand, has killed two guys held like 3, and slowed just about everyone so she can take her time taking the others out. That is how i would compare them.

I guess it would all depend on your playstyle. I am sort of an all or nothing type button mashing player so Fire/Fire worked for me, course if i missed any of my atks or two to three guys survived usually i would be toast.

Devices for me has actually slowed me down a bit and made me rethink how to go about doing things

RE: Devices vs. Buildup

On the energy manipulation front, you get access to Build Up at Level 4! So that might help in the decision making process.

RE: Devices vs. Buildup

Devices is a great set, once you spend your time setting a pair of mines, then caltrops over them on a corner. Then agro a mob and step back around the corner.
The caltrops bunch them up and the mines drop most or all of them. My record is 10 villians with this.

The only draw back is that lots of people won't wait for the mines etc to be set up or charge over the them and fight in front of them, but over all a good set with stealth, acc buff and other fun goodies.

RE: Devices vs. Buildup

Build up is a great power. It was the "Kick off" to my attack chain on my 50 Fire/Elec. Aim+Buildup and fire up the crowd. I would single shot sappers later in the game. All my friends were shocked, and would call them out for me to dispatch first, before the mob was fully engaged I dont think I could have done that without Build up.

Devices. I have a ENG/Dev in his mid to late teens. I chose devices for the drone and the stealth capabilities. Drone means you dont have to slot for Acc any more. With that in mind, I have plans to work in some different slotting techniques, and get into some Pool powers that I havnt before.

After my AoE blaster hit 50 I wanted to make something a little different, and I am not regretting it. Both builds are loads of fun.

RE: Devices vs. Buildup

Devices is a great solo secondary. I ran my energy/dev mostly solo to about 36. On teams, it not too bad, if your team pace is slow. I tend to run with very fast paced teams, which dont allow for much setup time. Honestly, after 50 levels of devices, I would never roll another devices again. Too slow for my needs, with little challenge of danger really. There's nothing more exciting than a fire/elec blaster as far as blasters go, IMO. Once you hit 35, you get your own nuke recovery power in Power Sink, and you're set for life. I thought energy secondary was the one to have, until someone talked me into elec. One of the big selling powers for energy is power boost, which is something a fire blaster has no use for really.

Every morning in Africa a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle or it will starve.
