Dell Computers???

I have been recently looking to buy a new desktop pc and found a really nice one onthe dell website. I know that you can only buy dell pc's from the site which puts me off a little as if my computer goes wrong who can fix it and who would have parts.. So i wondered does anyone here have a dell pc? Have you had problems with it? and if so can you only get them repaired by dell

Many Thanks

RE: Dell Computers???

hey, i have a dell dimension 3000, ive had it now for about a year and a half and have had no problems with it except for the printer which just seems to be a bit crap, but dell took care of it really quickly by replacing it with another printer that did not work....and then another, but apart from the rubbish printer its been really good and they did replace it fast and free :)

EDIT* my problem is that i did not buy a pc for gaming but rather for my girlfriend to do uni work so i have upgraded my graphics card and cooling, but i still only have a PCI slot :( would i have to replace the motherboard to be able to have a PCI-E slot? (im crap wth pc's)

RE: Dell Computers???

Well I don't have a dell, but I do have a MESH computer, which you can only buy online from their website, in a similar fashion. They provided a 1 year warranty which I took advantage of when my PC decided to stop turning on last summer. I spent quite a long time on the phone with them trying to get it sorted, but eventually they just sent a man round to pick it up. At which point they wiped my harddrive, installed a new graphics card and motherboard. I was not overly pleased, as they didn't mention they were going to do this, just that they might have to.

So, yes they do provide support for you, and will fix your computer, it may even be better than the support I recieved. You just have to make sure beforehand that you read all the bits about what they may and may not do without telling you about it.

RE: Dell Computers???

Thanks for the replies, i wasut a bit concerned as it has only a one year warranty and i wondered what may happen after that...weather not only would it cost me to get it fixed but also to ship it back to dell as im not sure where the nearest one is and i live in England so i wondered im my local pc repair would be able to fix it or it would have to go back to the specialists :P

RE: Dell Computers???

What's your budget?

I've just replaced my Dell- I wouldn't, really, reccomend buying one.
I had lots of Dell software (a pain), I had wireless network problems with their adaptor and I found the system was generally annoying.
Albeit, Dell have good system recovery software for starting afresh, and they make very good low-cost systems.

I replaced it with:
Dual 1.8ghz
2gigs RAM
8600 GT
19" Widescreen (Flat)
+ USB Wireless Network Adaptor
+450w PSU

for only £580.

Here's the site

Hope this helps! =)

there are a few new systems indeed i believe; but PCI-E is still very good for gaming unlike AGP (which is awefully slow compared to PCI-E since it is a lot older and was designed for 32 bit systems while PCI-E was developed for 64 bit). In my opinion; PCE-I is still one of the most reliabel systems that works for both 64 bit and dual core.

Below i little quote from wiki concerning PCIe since graphics cards are quiet important for gaming :)

QUOTE
PCI Express, officially abbreviated as PCI-E or PCIe, is a computer expansion card interface format. It was designed as a much faster interface to replace PCI, PCI-X (abbreviated from PCI eXtended) for interface cards as well as AGP interfaces for graphics cards. PCIe is based around serial links called lanes. The PCIe 1.1 specification supports x1 (pronounced "by one"), x2, x4, x8, x16, and x32 lanes. In each lane, the most common version PCIe 1.1 carries 250 MB/s in each direction. Every lane of the PCIe is a dual simplex link; simultaneously receiving and transmitting. The PCIe 1.1 bus runs at 2.5 GHz. Since an explicit clock is not used, rather the clock is recovered from the data stream a special encoding called 8b/10b is used. This coding ensures that there are a sufficient number of transitions with a single character (of 10 bits) to properly and reliably recover the clock. The astute reader will notice that there are 4 times more combinations than characters used. Some of these additional characters are either discarded due to an insufficient number of edges within the 10 bit packet to extract the clock. Others are used to encode error commands. Some may be used to provide "DC balancing" so that the wire doesn't acquire an electrical charge. The remainder are simply not used. Therefore, each lane transmits 250 MB/s. The most number of lanes supported is x32, so 250MB/s x 32 x 2 (bi-directionality) is 16GB/s for a theoretical maximum transfer rate.

Putting this into perspective, a single lane has nearly twice the data rate of normal PCI, a four lane slot has a comparable data rate to the fastest version of PCI-X 1.0, and an eight lane slot has a data rate comparable to the fastest version of AGP.

PCIe slots come in a variety of sizes referred to by the maximum lane count they support. A larger card will not fit in a smaller slot but a smaller card can be used in a larger slot. The number of lanes actually connected may be smaller than the number supported by the slot size. While a 16 lane card cannot be used in an 8 lane slot it can be used in a 16 lane slot with only 8 lanes connected. The number of lanes are "negotiated" during power-up or explicity during operation.

Unlike preceding PC expansion interface standards, PCIe is a point-to-point "bus". This type of connection removes the need for "arbitrating" the bus or waiting for the bus to free. This means that while standard PCI-X (133 MHz 64 bit) and PCIe x4 have roughly the same data transfer rate, PCIe x4 will give better performance if multiple device pairs are communicating simultaneously or if communication within a single device pair is bidirectional.

PCIe is a technology which receives further development and improvement. The current standard version in general use at time of writing is PCIe 1.1; however, PCI-SIG announced the availability of the PCI Express Base 2.0 specification on 15 January 2007. PCIe 2.0 doubles the data rate of each lane from 250 MB/s to 500 MB/s. PCIe 2.0 is backward compatible with PCIe 1.1 as a physical interface slot and from within software, so older cards will still be able to work in machines fitted with this new version. Further information on PCIe 2.0 is detailed below.

While in development, PCI Express (PCIe) was referred to as Arapaho or 3GIO for 3rd Generation I/O.

RE: Dell Computers???

I had Dell desktops in the past until i recently started building my own. I never had any complaints about any of the ones i've owned. On top of that they're standard IBM design so you can find parts anywhere and you can get them fixed at any time. I highly recommend Dell's if you are going to buy rather than build. HP i've had loads of problems with and the same with compaq. It seems I fix more of my friends Compaq PCs than anything else. And of course if your looking for compatibility and ease of upgrade stay away from iMac. Some like and some dont like, my personal opinion on Macs is that i loathe them. The OS might be nice, but thats about it.

Cheers mate.

RE: Dell Computers???

i never had a dell personally. it seams they are verry uneven in quality, some ppl experience no trouble at all and others have major vital systems crash on their dell's. offcourse thats the case with all pc's but dell is the most common pc provider i have herd of that crashes and has hardware failiures. mayby it depends on where in the world you order them from.

RE: Dell Computers???

while i was in germany, huge firm ordered a bunch of dells, they were in good condition, tho few had some flaws... mainly hardware issues (cpu/m-board and RAM). tho the technician was called and put new ones in 1,5 workday time. wasn't complaining.

consider most of these mass producing (mass as in number) companies, it's easier for a flaw to pass the tests as it's almost impossible to test each of these. matter of taste, but imho in south germany they have nice service ^^"

Dell computers are good. I like them for the corporate environment because we load our own image [Windows and other standard software] onto them.

Their support is pretty good. If you need parts they send them promptly.

I have never had a bad experience with them.

RE: Dell Computers???

I've been using Dell PCs for quite a while now. I've had very few problems with them. My problems usually crop up when the computer gets older or when I get around to upgrading components on them. My current gaming computer is a Dell XPS 600, which I've had for over a year now, with no problems (at least nothing hardware-related). It might be a good idea, if you can afford it, to buy the extended warranty. It gives you a bit more peace of mind. Just my 2 cents.

RE: Dell Computers???

First, depending on where you live, you also can order Dell computers through kiosks in malls. There is one about 30 minutes from my house.

I currently own three Dell computers, an XPS 400destop, XPS 1310 laptop and an Inpriron 1501 laptop (his, hers, and ours). I've had no problems with any.

My guild leader bought an XPS 700 (I believe) about 3 months ago.) He had a lightening strike about 3 weeks ago that destroyed it, plus other electronics in his house. Dell replaced the motherboard and processor for free.

My only recommendation is that if you go Dell, and want to game, don't go cheap. Most cheap computers (Dell and otherwise) use onboard graphics, stay away from that.

RE: Dell Computers???

In my house we have all Dell's. We have 3 dell laptops and a dell desktop and we've had problems but its just networking issues from our stupid router so dell wasn't to blame for that. In the 5 years we've had the desktop no computer issues with it. And the laptops are fairly new and have had no problems. In a couple years were probly gonna get a mac just because windows is an easy target for hackers. my $.02

quit gw for good. end of story.

Oh just an FYI, Dell owns Alienware. So you get the super high end components that Alienware has always produced as well as the support of the Dell brand.

BTW: not for all pocket books. Their cheapest laptop is under $1000 and their cheapest desktop is under $1400.

Alienware

RE: Dell Computers???

I've had two Dell computers and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. I can tell you first hand as I worked at Dell when they first came to TN and all those computers they lease they get back take apart and put back in other computers and sell as brand new comps. There are several other companies that give just as good warranty and better service for a cheaper price and I mean a lot cheaper. I have a Gateway right now and its ok but I plan to change from it as well for personal reasons but at least with their service department I could just tell them what was wrong and they would send a new part to me without making me run through their stupid test. But as far as price companies like Cyberpower and others give just as long of warranty and all for a much lower price.

My sister and brother-in-law both work as techs at a local university and they don't recommend them either as they are working on them more than any other brand.

But the main thing is even if a hundred people had problems with theirs, who knows you may be the one that doesn't its like anything else, there is good and bad in all of them.

RE: Dell Computers???

i have an inspiron E1505 laptop...i JUST started having trouble with it. its not gaming based. i bought/built it about a year or two ago and its been great for playing GW on. my dad's dell E310(i believe) jus pooped the bed. we cant turn it on. my other half said that it was either the power supply or the switch..and its been about a year since he bought it. there are computer places around where i live but im not sure what they can do. in the next couple of days i am guna make a call to dell to see what they can do. however, i found that alienware has good computers as well and since its owned by dell i thot that it would be a good buy.
