The Selfishness

Why do people keep blocking out their builds on pics? AMP is a fansite where people don't just try to discuss Guild Wars but also to help each other.... seems a bit out of line to block out builds... although blocking out names is the right thing to do..

Good point, mate!

No builds are really special... there is no build that only 1 player have used... no idea to hold it as a secret :S

People always say "Hey don't block out your build!" in screenshots but when people don't block it out half the comments are about their build.
Better off Ctrl+Shift+H'ing your display.

RE: The Selfishness

Because generally the Screenshot posted has nothing to do with the build, the poster just hasn't turned the UI off before taking the picture. When left on, there's nearly always off-topic comments about the skillbar etc, which detracts from the real reason for posting the screenshot in the first place.

As pickle says, it would savea lot of aggro if y'all just turned the UI off first :)

Maybe if you were very competitive you should block it out. I guess it's kinda like showing the enemy your playbook. But for most of us that just play for the fun of it, blocking out your build is kinda pointless.

RE: The Selfishness

Its sad to say, but screen shots is still a place where people get flamed for their builds, Most builds now a days are no secret or they don't stay that way for too long. The thing about that is, if someone accomplishes something with a who cares what build they used, and whether or not it is the greatest ever seen. I use a variety of builds. Some are standards in the game, some I've modified myself and others I've just lucked into after countless hours of trying different things.

So i agree that mostly its to protect themselves from flames more than it is to hid a build

Alot of people will also say like;

"OMFG you have mending + frenzy you are t3h n00b"

Or anything else, it's general flaming that other people don't like.

RE: The Selfishness

WEll put it this way...

If you want to take a great ss then you go into the interface options and hide all the bars. This unclutters the screen, makes it look better, and means that noone will comment

If you take away your skills, and post a ss which basically says 'I'm UBER-1337' in huge letters (I.e. something legendary) then people will want to know your build. And if you think that your build is good, there's no reason that you should be bothered by some 'noob' flaming - mending and Frenzy FTW!! :)

Therefore, if you have a great build which helped you to really achieve something in GW, then share it with the rest of the community, or hide the interface. Don't just remove the skills themselves, that's just irritating.

Unless your build is really good but not realy yet don't even bother showing it.

Mind you this doe'nt always keep comments relevant because in one of my ss i got about 5 psots about the wepon i was using :o

Valid reasons have already been posted about why some folks block their skill bar but another thing to consider is the following:

I know for a fact that many people don’t experiment with skills or make their own builds. They go to gwiki, here, or wherever and then load whatever on their skill bar. They want the easy way, to where, I don’t know (You gotta ask yourself “What is my goal?”). Anyway if they have success, then they posts, “Great build” if they don’t, then they flame “This build is garbage”. They never give reasons why a build is good or bad because … they don’t know why. Some people will copy a specialized build and try using it for all general areas. They don’t even know what the skills are doing but just pressing buttons.

If you want to help those people and the community, then force them to think. The sooner people learn how skills & builds work, the better the community will be (For some reason the old adage about teaching a man to fish is coming to mind). How do I know? My son and I did the very thing that I accused “those people” of doing. After a year, I’m just now learning this lesson and trying to see how skills work and put builds together. I have beat all chapters two times each (some three) but none of them with builds of my own. Why? Because of the very reason your wanting builds to be posted. If I would have done what the really good players told be to do from the beginning, by now, I would be a much better player and an asset to the community. However, with that being said I would also still be playing one character (instead of six) and only have one chapter behind me because I’m a slow learner. But I would know that character’s skills & builds very well. What’s the best approach? I don’t know.

Am I saying that builds should never be shown? No. I’m just giving one possible reason why sometimes people choose not to post them.

“What we obtain too cheap, we esteem to lightly.”

RE: The Selfishness

The reasons stated make it obvious, even though GameAmp is a ''friendly'' community, there are people here who just LOVE to comment on the details.

Even if you run a build everyone knows, you can get comments like:

''Lol, cookiecutter build!''
''Dude, you need to change that skill with [name it]''
''You can't blabla with that build! Its for BlaBla!''

ETC

Until that would stop, i dont think anyone will listen other then those that agree on not blocking.

As for names, NAWRIGHT

Blur em out, it seems already a crime here putting your IGN in your signature cause there's always some person that just HAS to bloody whisp you ingame telling you about the latest dumb post you made and why he doesn't like you.

Is it possible that IF the person who whisps about this and his IGN is known on GameAmp you can contact an admin (with screenies) about it? Cause i dont presume someone just using no curse words telling you his rather perhaps honest, but unnecessary opinion would be looked upon by ANet.

Just a question i was wondering about, cause some people already reported such things on here. :)

RE: The Selfishness

My point is, if you're going to show the skill bar, at least show your skills...

If you're running a wiki build, which other people have been running, people might try it, and if you've got your own build, people will look at that and be inspired... why be bothered by minor flaming? It does nothing, just makes the flamers look bad. Also, a little criticism can be helpful...

If these guys have legendary titles then 1) They probaly have good builds and 2) they will definately be able to work out how to hide the skill bar and the rest of the interface.

Another point: I have 10 characters. Several of them are unable to run most builds (cos of elites etc) and the others would have to cap them. This forces me to create my own basic 'newbie' builds... for instance, if you have a simple multipurpose shutdown mesmer, then you might take empathy, backfire, some healing, energy tap, and have highish F.C.

Some people dont like critisicm at all, that's why they wont do it, and will never do until the time comes whoever checks the pics validates those with blurry/cencored out skillbars not postable.

Until then, ain't gonna happen.

They don't want you to know their build...it's no big deal. If they feel they want to keep their build a secret let them keep it secret. It's probably not that special anyway.
I personally don't feel like wasting time with paint so I leave my bar there.

I thought it was also partly because people don't want their unique and well-working builds nerfed/overused.

Very nice quote indeed ^^

On the question of people copying and using cookie cutter builds it can be a good way to start learning, whether or not that makes you lazy and stop experimenting and trying new combinations for yourself is a different matter :)

I really don't have a big problem with people hiding their skills or displaying them, my biggest beef is how it makes the screenshot look ugly (shift and print screen ftw!) all the reasons I've seen in this thread are valid.

There are those that love to dictate what is and isnt a good build, perhaps it makes them feel uber leet? All I know is if it works for you and against the foes your facing then you've got it sussed...I hate being dictated to about builds, one of the reasons why I've always shyed away from PvP, I even get it from some guild members, sometimes their advise is good sometimes I prefer my own way of doing things even if the 'greater community' (ie those who read wiki ) believes otherwise.

The flaming thing is just sad and it makes me tempted to post a screenshot with an uber bad build just to see what happens....luckily we have a great community here, the staff and most of its members work hard to keep it flame free so there is nearly always someone to criticise the flamers and show them the error of their ways.
