i started playing guildwars again 3 days ago and have got a W/MO to 20 with 26hours play time =P
but thats not the point i am used to just using henchmen, like in prhoreies and factions, not like in nightfasll you HAVE to use heroes in a large amound of primary quests, well, ive sorta not used my heroes and there all levels 7-9.
will i REALLY need them ? do theyut fortanetly all die ?
- im at the mission where u gotta get all the sunpears back to istani. i beleive its the 5th or 6th mission.

I'd definitely start bringing the heroes with you wherever possible, it's a good way to get them levelled up, they'll soon reach 20. They are much easier to customise than Hench, and despite what people say, you really don't need to spend any money on them at all if you don't want to. Just give them things that drop for you etc.
Most NF missions require 1 specific hero to be present, not all. So, you might have 1 lower level guy in your group, but tbh those earlier missions are pretty easy and you should manage ok.

do heroes get XP when i complete quests and there in my party ? or is it just off kills

Im not 100%; but they do get experience from missions i thought. However im not sure since i never paid attention to it O.o

No they do get exp for quests if they are in party when you accept reward.

ah ok then, i suppose if i just put em in my party when i go to accept rewards i could sorta get em to 20 quicker =P

Well, actually they do seem to get exp from quest rewards...cause whenever I had some quests done to pick up the reward, I put the heroes with the lowest lvl in my group...and they leveled up...so I guess they do get exp.

They get xp from everything you get xp from... when they're in the party
This makes it pretty fun if you have high lvl friends, because you can get your heroes to 20 before yourself...

As stated above heroes do get experience from quests/mission as long as they are in the party when you accept the reward.
Just a tip - If you have factions an easy way to level your heroes is to do FFF (fast Faction Farming) outside of lutgards(?spelling is wrong) conservatory. You can get around 50K exp in an hour + ~3.7K + 20K factoin towards your savoir of the kurzick title track. Kind of a 3 birds with 1 stone deal. I leveled all my heroes that way. Even If you don't have an asassin or the right skills you can still be a doorman so everyone can play.

When I am lvl 20 and going into NF with lvl 5 heroes I doo all the Istani mission leading to consulate docks missions. I do the mission with low level heroes and they level up a lot. When it is completed I then head off to factions and do some of the K center quest. Btw this is with a new character. The quest are easy and are all in the same zone.
As for weapons I run into problems I try alternating between weapons and heroes and loose track of which character's heroes have which weapon slows my progression down.
