http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Number=2922929
holy crap! if thats not discouraging to a new player, i don't know what is...anyways...i was wondering...
is the blaster still that useless in the overall scheme of things, and is it still that hard for a new player to start out with one, or has the updates tilted things back in their favor in any way?

Wow...I only read part of it and I'm depressed. I think blasters are great but they (like all ATs) require skill to play. A blasters biggest challenge is not aggroing the entire group of bad guys and getting killed while dealing out insane amounts of damage. But as you can see by my signature block my primaries include a tank and a scrapper. I love having blasters around because they help clean things up that much quicker. Many times my focus becomes "protect the blaster"...basically blasters are the artillery battery which does the most devastation. I'm playing one now and I'm enjoying it.
Since you're new to the game play the various AT's and see what you like. Some folks think playing a tank is as much fun as watching paint dry (as this guy does). I think it's a challenge keeping all the aggro on yourself while staying alive.
Enjoy the game and let your own opinions guide you.

Well, archer331, I have only one thing to say.
Don't listen to what other people say (especially not the creator of that guide, although it's obviously made with a big smile in mind). Play the characters you enjoy, play different character, find out what you like, and play that.
That's it. That's what online playing is all about. Having fun. Don't let some fool with his silly little guide prevent you from playing whatever archetype you want (Blaster in this case).

My first 50 was a blaster, and I am not going to lie - I have like all of the debt badges, however, guides on this site and others are guides, not written in stone.
speaking of stone - I have little to no patience in playing Stone/Stone tanks I loathe them cause of the lack of mobility they have, but there are those on this site and others that swear by them and do excellent with them. From a very biast opinion I would not recommend Stone/Stone to anyone, but there are probably tons of other people on here and the CoH main forums that would tell me I am crazy and stupid. Again that is the point it would be my biast opinion, and who knows maybe you could log in make a Stone/Stone tank and friggin rock with it.
I have quoted it before and I will quote it again(lol should prolly put it in my Sig) -
"Never let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do, because then you will never know the full potential of your creativity and imagination."
I happen to like blasters, i mean sure you got like 50 hitpoints (i am stretching it a bit you got more) but for every 25pts of dmg your enemy does to you, you will do 200 to them (again prolly stretching it a bit but you get the point) As a blaster from a team standpoint you and the Scrapper are the B&B of the team the other AT's are there to control, take the hit, and buff and debuff. But with you and/or a Scrapper baddies tend to fall a hell of a lot faster.
So try it out and have fun - after all it is your $15 a month not the people who make the guides.

And think of debt badges as a badge of honor. You actually got into the fight instead of running. My scrapper has the whole collection and my tank is proudly working on his. It's just a chance to let the defenders get some practice.

Ok, some of what in there is true, but it's not the whole deal.
The trick with blasters is to PLAN your fights, thats right you have to slow down a bit and work out where to stand, who to blast and when and if to run. Basic drill is that you are going to be doing most of the pulls and the lion's share of damage.
The big trick is to avoid the AoE's until the tank has the aggro and then you can go nuts with the crowd pleasers. A good tank and your team should kick it but I've run with teams of 4 blasters and we put down so much fire that most mobs didn't get close.
Style of play is the big thing here, choose a AT to match your style and go with that. But I'd recommend play one of each AT to get the feel of how they work, so you know how they work. I think it makes you a better team player, but that may be just me.

Playing blasters is alot more exciting than most other ATs. It's a matter of, "How fast can I take these guys out before I'm toast?" Or there's the try and take advantage of a full defiance bar and really put it to them. you can also be a little more tactical, and pull certain mobs, to allow less aggro. Then there's your all mighty nuke, that when you properly can decimate large mobs gathered for the slaughter. Sure, there's a risk. Sure, you can die alot. But that's what makes them fun, the risk with big payoffs. People who complain about how they die all the time with their blaster, can go ahead back to their easy ATs, to be coddled and pampered. Let the real men (or women :p) play blasters, and show them how it's done.

OK whoever made that little thing up is an idiot, first of all well yeah he is. Blasters deal SICK damage especially with their special attack AKA the nuke. idk wat that guy was thinkin when he wrote that but i think hes downright outta his mind lol. they put blasters in for a reason and that was to kill, and that is what they do. Oh and have u ever been on a team with no blasters? It takes like 2x as long just to kill a mob. IMO blasters rock but.......... that might be because that was my first AT.

There is one point I have to agree to...
Blasters are a total defensless AT.
With no mez protect at all.
That becomes a huge disadvantage when you hit lvl 35+
It is a pain to solo at that level.
And nukes don't help anything if you solo.
And "start teaming" is no answering option.

Wow, we didnt nead to hear that.
Blasters in my opinion are the second cool/DMG giver in the game. My friend, he has a lvl 32 energy/energy blaster, and he sometimes solo's on invincible.
My scrapper can barely go on rugged! There are good parts to becoming a blaster, It's Defiance, you all know the affect right? No AT's have it, see once your low on life, dont run, fight, and they all die in 1 or 2 shots.
And listen to everyone, dant care what other people say. You can get acrobatics, and it will help you tons!

I can hardly believe what you say...
My experiences are the opposite way.
(I have several scrapper and my main blaster is also En/En.)
And if Defiance would be that good, the Devs wouldn't discuss about changing it on the official board.
Defiance is pointless, because the moment it kicks in, your dead anyway.
A lot of times I go from "no defiance" to "faceplant" in one shot.

Those are personal experiences. Perhaps you simply lack the skill to be able to solo with a Blaster. I soloed on Invincible as well with my level 34 Archery/Devices Blaster. Easy. So don't say something is impossible just because you cannot do it.
I do have to agree about the things you say about Defiance though. It's the second worst inherent there is, in my opinion. I'm sure there are people who absolutely LOVE Defiance, but I'm not one of them.

Your solo survivability really depends on your playstyle. If you are used to playing a scrapper, for example, then mez protection and being able to take on larger-sized groups may be something you are used to and take for granted. If you adopt that same playstyle with a blaster, you'll get those debt badges quickly ;) .

Hillarious little article by an obviously disgruntled ex-Blaster!
Don't believe everything you read.
You can't be the highest damage dealer in the game and get all of the goodies like mez protection. With every perk there is a trade off detriment to the set. You have high damage ranged attacks where 90% of the Scrappers must get in direct melee range. Has no one ever heard of a "Break Free"? Ever try taking one just before a fight starts when you know the Boss has a mezz effect? Looked into all of the nifty new IO's that offer mez protection now?
You can solo on Invincible if the selection of powers and mob combination is right. For anyone to say it's imposible I only have those three little words no one wants to hear..... learn..... to....... play.........
Now, if you tell me you're soloing Malta on Invincible, I will have my doubts about your godliness(Or the level you picked that mission up =P).
Blasting is a hard job because your squishy. Sure Scrappers have solo-ability above and beyond most other classes, but no one brings the big DPS to a large group like a Blaster. And if the Scrapper is out DPS'ing the Blaster in a group..... I'll say it again...... L2P
If you want your easy button, go to Staples for office supplies. Enjoy a little challenge in your daily gaming experience? Roll up a Blaster. The level 40-50 content is really not meant to be solo'd, but some classes have figured out how to solo a lot of it. No one is solo'ing the 40-50 AV missions any longer and by the time that you get a character to 40 you should have made a friend or two along the way. Learn to team. The Justice League, Avengers and even the Super Friends all figured out a long time ago, that some challenges require backup.
I'll back the Blaster class as still being one of the most fun classes to play in this game any day. But that's just me, and I love dealing sick damage!

I got a good chuckle (no pun intended) out of that article as well.
Blasters are very "useful" in the scheme of things. Like all the other ATs, blasters have their purposes.
The nerfs mentioned were designed to bring balance into the gameplay. Blaster's squishyness is balanced by his DPS output.
I never try to peak my defiance for increased damage output, at least not on purpose. If your defiance increases, your health is low, and all a bad guy has to do is snap you with a rubber band and your going down for the count.
Lack of Mez protection is my biggest gripe, but like Thundar said, Break Frees. And if your with an emp, dont be afraid to shout out for Clear Mind.
I came away from that article thinking I need to play some of mine more!
And one thing not mentioned is SNIPE. Gotta love the one shot-ability of that power. Get it, slot it, use it, love it.
Tank'ns my Bidness and Bidness is GOOD!

Yes, Defiance suck, for me, but for my soloist blaster friend things its good, and he pack alot of inspites/take breather, so he is just fine. But hey, this topic is about blasters and there opion, so i dont belive anything bad about blasters here.

I found the article actually kinda funny and a bit truthful. When I'm looking for a challenge, I'm playing my lvl 41 En/En blaster solo. I guess I enjoy that life or debt challenge. Its that whole "me or him" mentality. Plus I like having to plan my attacks. My lvl 38 Ill/Storm controller is fun to play with but I rarely die and with Phantom Army, Phantasm, Spectral Terror, Snow Storm, blah, blah, blah, I can darn near leave my computer when I confront a reasonable size mob.
Being a blaster is a tough gig but I think its worth it.
Oh, and boy do i HATE DEFIANCE! Give me something I can use before my inevitable death.

Ah Defiance. Probably the most hated and misunderstood "attribute" on any AT in the game. Anyone actively trying to use it will of course hate it because it's never been intended for any intentional use.
What's even more funny is that when it was first announced and not yet tried in practical application it was cryed about as an unfair advantage to Blasters and it would be "Raining Blasters" as we all intentionally took falling damage just so we could get amped up damage.
As stupid as that sounds, it was a fairly harped on gripe until........... they released it.
Then everybody got to see Defiance in action. Or, NOT as the case may be.
Here's the deal on Defiance: Your a High DPS generating character class in the game with lots of squish and little protection. Trying to time defiance with health status just gets you killed. "Why can't I use this supposed attribute without dying?" seems to ring loud quite often.
Why? Because you're not supposed to be trying to use it at all!
The article made it quite obvious that we Blasters squish pretty easy. Even when I'm in my groove I spend a lot of time at 50% health or less when getting into it with a tough mob. My life dips in the low ranges all of the time without me wanting it to, and when it makes that unexpected dip whatever attack is next in my attack chain is getting boosted before I munch a green and wipe my Defiance bar.
I do not try to use it. Being an aggresive Blaster activates it without any consious thought on my part. If I'm easily handling the mobs my life bar never dips low enough to activate it, and in that situation, who cares about Defiance..... I'm managing just fine without it.
But as a good Blaster I can look at a mob's life bar and make that evaluation of Endurance + Attack chain + rate at which I can make the mobs life bar drop.
What happens is that I decide to set the difficulty up a bit, pull an extra mob or just underestimate my enemy. My life bar is dipping faster than theirs and turning and running is probably just as dead as holding my ground. The margin won't be by much so I just keep Blasting away to take as many of them with me as possible. (Good time to Nuke if you think you're going to die anyhow) I get plenty of Defiance laden blasts in when I push my limits, I just never know when I'm getting them.
Defiance works best when you forget you have it and just play your Blaster. If your team or solo mission is testing your survivablity Defiance will be amping your damage while you're not looking.
Not to mention the PvP aspect in reguards to close fights. The closer they have you to death, the harder you are hitting them at a low point in your health status.
If you are seeing that Defiance bar filling up often all the time you are probably setting the bar a little too high. Turn the difficulty down a notch or adjust your strategy to match your mobs a little better.
Defiance is the invisible mother's helper.

I'm not sure why it hasn't come up yet, but remember those pool powers you can start getting at 6? Try adding Hover and Stealth to your blaster (or defender) and, if the slots allow, go superjump for combat jumping and acrobatics (mez protection) Maybe even tough & weave. If you're inherently squishy and you know it, um... YOU KNOW IT, look for ways to balance that out.
Another thought (and maybe i say this because my blasters have defenses) never run away from melee, my fire/elec blaster will toast most anything before it gets to me but when the few do get close, my electrical punches do more damage than anything fire I've thrown (excluding inferno and Blazing Bolt)
Last of my 2 cents... don't run off & make a cookie cutter FOTM blaster that everyone else has, examine the powers involved and find out what your skillset will lend itself to. If you like to tank (like I do) try anything/electrical, or anything/energy. If you're used to trollers & defenders & want to stay back out of the action, look at devices or even ice as secondary pools. If you like to tank and kill everything in site in a short period of time, check out fire/fire.
Oh! and don't let Big spread any of his lies about killing me in the arena on my fire/elec blaster, it's all lies! LIES I SAY!
Nas :)
any questions on slotting for defense, yell in game @nasali, i'm a primarily solo blaster & at 41 only have the 1st debt badge

What blaster puts out the most damage, and is best for soloing? I'm not talking about personal preferences, I mean the numbers behind the powers.
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.

They all generate roughly the same overall DPS. Some over an AoE, some single target. They simply have different ways of dispensing that damage.
There's about a dozen posts labeled "What's the best Blaster" in this section. Like I've told everyone on those..... there isn't.
Fire Blasters can out DPS Energy and Electric Blasters when you are working the mobs, but the same Energy and Electic Blaster will pull ahead in DPS if you are working over an EB or AV because there is more single target DPS available to them.
I don't think you'll be getting any numbers for that question. You might get the Prima Stategy guides. My old one gave base damage stats to the powers. I'm not sure if the newer version they did offered that data. I never got a copy of it.

What a lot of players seem to forget is that blasters are long distance fighters and not intended for hand to hand combat. I play the long range card for all its worth and avoid hand to hand combat whenever possible.
The problem I see is that a vast majority of blasters, defenders, and controllers do not take advantage of this fact and run head long into the crowd.
One of the design problems is that the secondary sets seem to encourage the blasters to fight hand to hand and not to fight at range as intended. The developers need to provide a secondary set that would encourage long distance combat to help offset the basters lack of defense to controller style attacks.
The person that wrote his opinion on the blaster must of had bed experience with them or could not make the most use of their powers. If you attack a group with a ranged attack and you are too close yes you will get stomped. If you have your snipe attack fall back as far as you can and use that. Also invest in range enhancements to give you that addition reach out and touch someone ability.

by examining both primary and secondary sets of a blaster, when I started playing CoH, I had always viewed the Secondary Melee atks as kind of a "Oh #$%@!!!" this one got to close.
it really wasn't untill the higher levels that i was able to figure out that if i balanced out my guy with stuff from the 3rd pool as well as some Def stuff from the Mastery set that i could maximize the dmg i dealt by running in head first. I usually could drop everyone before they could get their 2nd and sometimes even their first shot off. Granted i don't do that on Invincible. As you up the Diff, you change your tactics, it is all a learning process. and just like in schools everywhere there is always that one kid that just doesn't get it

| QUOTE | What a lot of players seem to forget is that blasters are long distance fighters and not intended for hand to hand combat.
See, you're looking at blasters from a "primary is all that the AT is" mindset. Blasters are designed to put out the most damage, not necessarily ranged only or melee only. The melee attacks in the secondary do massive damage when slotted, and besides, it's nice to know I have an "Oh Crap" melee attack when mobs do get that close. Kind of like other AT, such as tanks, who's secondaries specialize in crowd control through powers such as Fault, Foot stomp, FSC, Ice Patch, or to a lesser extent, Whirling hands (axe, mace). Then there's Scrappers who's secondaries allow them to get in thick of things, and "scrap it out".

| QUOTE | | I'm not sure why it hasn't come up yet, but remember those pool powers you can start getting at 6? Try adding Hover and Stealth to your blaster (or defender) and, if the slots allow, go superjump for combat jumping and acrobatics (mez protection) Maybe even tough & weave. If you're inherently squishy and you know it, um... YOU KNOW IT, look for ways to balance that out. |
That is until you face off in the Arena against ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, Nas, I completely forgot this buttkicking even took place! (I'm an old 24, too many knocks to the head in football)
I'm going to have to post my screenies of the whitewashing I gave you when I get home from work
Two thumbs up for Big!

And you can ask DM (but he'll probably deny it being the midget that he is), Nas was talkin 31 flavors of smack before she went down in the Arena. Wait, before I put her on her back in the Arena... Do'h... >.<

I use this topic for a tiny question...
If I don't want to waste two power-slots for both Aim, and Build Up, wich one should I take? :)

I would take both. But thats just me.
But if you have to choose, Id go with Build up. You get the majority of this buff on the damage side with a little Acc thrown in.
Aim is just the opposite. What are your intentions for the use? What power are you wanting to affect with it?
Tank'ns my Bidness and Bidness is GOOD!

Well I'm thinking of try an Energy/energy blaster. I might try take both Aim, and Build Up. But if I'm not, I was a little curious of wich one is the best.
