Invasion of WoW players coming to GW?

Not so long ago i read a lot about people going from GW to WoW. This included many of my friends.

Now in the past 1 week like 5 of my friends has stopped WoW calling it "stupid" now. :P

They're on the same guild as iam now.

I guess it's the GW:EN that's pulling people back to GW? All though that doesn't sound very likely to me about my friends, since what i last heard what they think about GW from them was #%¤%#..

You guys noticed the same? :P

The same is not happening with the people I know. Most of them 'quit' WoW over and over, but just keep going back.

btw, lets make sure to not make this a WoW bashing thread. It's your choice to play the game you want. I'm not going to tell someone else their game is stupid and I would like the same respect in return

RE: Invasion of WoW players coming to GW?

Heh...this is how it goes:

You play GW for a while, think you've seen it all, maybe you're getting bored, you want to try something new...

You look around you...what's the first game to jump out at you?

9 MILLION PLAYERS !!! AREN'T WE GREAT! COME GIVE BLIZZARD YOUR CASH!

SO you go off to play WoW...

You pay Blizzard 30 quid, play for a few months, and realise that the graphics are comparatively naff (Which I think is a fair comment, compared to GW) , the combat is boring (ditto), character development takes comparatively forever, there's (at least in some places) a really obsessive community - people who gain 10 levels in a day, which is basically impossible after level 20ish

So then you give up paying blizzard cash, and return to GW... thinking 1) Wow, WoW was rubbish, 2) What a waste of cash, 3) Maybe I'm just a casual player, 4) Hardcore players are nutcases, 5) GW is sooo tight compared...everything is soo good

Edit: These are MY opinions of WoW. Other people may have had different experiences. I do not mean to flame, I only mean to explain why SOME people return from WoW to GW.

Oh and by the way, the hardcore lot who play any other MMO seem to think that if it doesn't take you 1000 hours to reach max level, the game is 'casual orientated' and that GW doesn't even count as an MMO 'cos you don't have to pay' and 'cos you can hit max level in a day!!'

though, don't flame WoW.
it's not a bad game, it just isn't everyone's 'thing'

RE: Invasion of WoW players coming to GW?

I toned down my other post, it was a bit ranty.

Oh. I forgot this.

A nice example of this can be found in the forums at

www.aionsource.com

Anyone feel like helping me to infuriate those guys with casualness?

Other than them, Aion looks really good...but those guys seem to think that if you can't spend 3+ hours a day playing it's not worth it, and that WoW is unbelieveably easy to get to 70 in...

Worryingly, NCsoft have stated that It'll be aimed at the casual gamer, with a slightly longer time to get to max level than WoW.. now that seems like a bit of an opposite, since 240 hours is a very long time to spend doing anything (WoW) so even longer is hardly casual... I mean, I amazed myself at having spent 400 hours over 14 months on GW... yet I still haven't got the cash for a single 15k set hmm...

RE: Invasion of WoW players coming to GW?

I saw WoW on a friends computer, brand new Dell laptop, 24" screen. The graphics are too cartoony for me. He explained that it's supposed to look like that. So if thats what they are going for, then they got it right on the money. I like more realism.

One of my Guildies left GW for WoW, soon he'll be back.

RE: Invasion of WoW players coming to GW?

I have a friend who used to play a couple hours a day on GW but because he didn't like pvp and felt he had done everything in pve he decided to play WoW. Now whenever I hear from him he says he enjoys playing WoW but misses all the good friends he made playing GW. He always says he can't seem to find the same kind of group of people that he found in GW. I think that says a lot about the 2 games.

From when i played wow at my friends house it was ok. Youlnt really make frineds becasue u couldnt just mapp to them and see them. You had to walk along time. People cant come help you with quests which is hard because then you dont get to see cool wepons and such. If they added mapping itd be better. But GW FTW nothing against wow

RE: Invasion of WoW players coming to GW?

I really hope that this is not going to be a "GW PWNS WOW" Topic.
For the last time againts everybody, Gw and Wow are not games to be compared with each other, they are totally different.

But back on topic: i think so that people come from wow too gw for gw:en , heard a lot of friends while they saw the ingame trailer that they like the new game and want to buy it.Now i have a friend that likes WoW, he played gw, but didn't liked it (not graphics or gameplay, he felt better with wow) Now i don't like wow (same reason, with some others tinny things) but we never have flame things about wow or gw.When i see a guy saying : WOW PWNS GW , then i will like to know why !

But 5 Words now that explains a lot : Guild Wars Totally Pwns :p

RE: Invasion of WoW players coming to GW?

Unlike some of you who have played WoW, I haven't played it before, so I don't have a expert opinion about what one is better.

So if these WoW players are coming to GW, that's great. If then they go back to WoW, that's fine. GW is not everyone's cup of tea and likewise for WoW.

But because it's free after buying the game, and not having to rely on potions, I chose GW, and I'm sticking to it.

Although there are more people near my joint that plays WoW than GW, I don't have a grudge with any of them because they choose to play WoW.

I think people are excercising one of the things that make Guildwars so good. The fact that you can set it down and go do something else and then pick it back up again.

RE: Invasion of WoW players coming to GW?

I played wow for a month coz GW was getting a bit tedious, as it often does for me near the release of a new campaign ( free trial ofc :P ) and didnt think that the slow pace, repetitveness of the game was worth my £8.99 a month.

But then again I know people that prefer that type of game and constantly knock GW with the usual '' level cap is 20, how easy, and thefore boring does that make the game '' .

There are aspects of WoW that would be great for me to se in GW, like huge raids for example, thats one thing that attracted me to the game, a guild event really is an event for the whole guid, not just the first 8 people to ToA or whatever.

But in the end at least I can say ive tried WoW, unlike the people i know that knock GW :P so dont knock it until youve tried it, as the saying goes.

This is just my opinion, im not trying to flame if you see it that way.

RE: Invasion of WoW players coming to GW?

Heh I love the comment from retro:
Umm
level cap is 20, how easy, and thefore boring does that make the game
That totally misses the point of GW... the point is to have a good build once you get to 20, which is a lot harder than just getting there... GW makes you earn skills by getting to places, while in WoW you just waste all your hard earned gold buying 'x skill lvl 5'...

And I, at least found WoW levelling to be really boring after about lvl 18, when it takes more than 1/2 an hour to lvl... got so bad that I spent 6 hours at lvl 27 only to get halfway to 28... so I gave up...

Surely the point of a game is the feeling of achievement? In GW you get that whenever you get a new skill, or finish a mission, or gain a level, or can buy your next bit of 15k armour to have the most skimpily clad butt out there ;) In grinders, it takes forever to level, and each level only makes a tiny difference...so it just takes the same fun you get from GW achievements and stretches it out until it just seems boring and pointless... which is a shame, I feel...

And a map system really would improve WoW...the griffons are naff...
