Has anyone some tips on how do defeat Magni the Bison in the Norn Tournament (quest; Round One, Fight!) with a ranger?
I defeat the first opponents with ease but then I just get stuck at Magni...
oh, you can also place tips for other professions for that quest here

It's easy with a Rt or monk. I'm stuck in it with a warrior. Norgu ftw.. -.- Empathy + that elite which deals about 200dmg when ever you use adrenaline skill..

I had no real trouble Killing him with my Blinding Surge air magic AB build:
-Blinding Surge (E)
-Ligtning Strike
-Lightning Orb
-Enervating Charge
-Chain Lightning (forgot to replace since its not that good in a 1 vs 1) Better bring Lightning Javelin or so.
-Whirlwind/Tenais Wind
-Aura of Restoration
-Air Attunement
His Purge Signet is no match for the constant blind and weakness this build brings and after a while he went down.
Most other opponents are killable with this build although Gwen gave me a hard time with her constant interrupts.
Good luck!

Riposte, Deadly Riposte, Shield Bash, Dolyak Signet, Distracting Blow, Healing Signet, Grenths Balance, Endure Pain.
Then, just hope you get lucky with the opponents, This build can be most of the casters, not including the degen mesmer, Norgu, and a few others. But, it can beat any melee, the blinding ele(just interrupt Glimmering Mark), and the third mesmer(blinds and spams Waestrals Worry, but you can outheal that, and hit once or twice between the blinds, this fight takes awhile). And it has no problem taking out Magni.
Now, I've only done this on my warrior with the above build, and it took me about 20 tries to finally get the right opponents, but when I was done beating them, I decided to never try it again, lol.

I take out Endure Pain and toss in Flail. After working out the timing, I've been able to kill just about every opponent I've come across in the Norn Tournament. Razah is the only one who gives me problems but is easy if you rush in and start attacking before he gets all his spirits up.
Sitting on 13 bison tokens at the moment. Not bothered to get anymore since the crown looks horrible :P

My variation:
Auspicious Parry, Riposte, Deadly Riposte, Sever Artery, Gash, Dolyak Signet, Healing Signet, and an optional slot.
You can keep spamming the first three and he'll never get a hit off unless you cop an Irresistible Blow. Here's some ideas for the optional slot:
/Mo - Purge Signet (Get rid of all those nasty me/n hexes in one go, no worries about energy loss)
/N - Gaze of Contempt (Excellent against Argo and other enchantment heavy foes)
/Me - Lyssa's Balance (Again, enchantment removal is pleasant)
/R - Antidote Signet (Too generalised, but there really isn't anything you can take without killing off warrior attributes!)
/E - Whirlwind/Tenai's Wind (At zero air magic it still provides a great knockdown source - all the opponents will use their attack on you, and it's a great time to use this skill to apply the sever/gash combo on them)
/A - Signet of Malice (Much like Antidote Signet, this one's a bit too limited in it's use. I'd advise you pick another secondary profession, as condition applying opponents aren't very popular at all in the tournament)
/Rt - Vampirism (Not worth it if you don't have at least rank 8 in the sunspear title track, but if you do, you've got one of the best optional skills to pick! If you've been covered in dangerous hexes, you can easily sit back and spam Auspicious Parry (which registers from wands too), Dolyak Signet, and Healing signet to keep yourself alive while the spirit deals damage AND heals you)
/P - Don't even bother. Seriously, Remedy Signet is your best bet and it removes a single condition every 5 seconds under constant spam. Waste of time.
/D - Rending Touch (My preferred enchantment removal skill over the rest, being unconditional and relatively spammable)
Of course those are just a rough idea of what you can take as the optional skill - I've seen people using the new EotN PvE only skills in abundance (Disarm being very popular against Magni - disables his skills, therefore wiping his adrenalin).
As for a Ranger primary, I'd just try a Touch Ranger build. Of course take some good defensive stances - Magni hits too hard for vampiric healing to handle.[/B]

Back to the Original Poster's question, I had trouble with my Ranger at first as well. I tried trapping, as some players said that's the way to go, but I didn't have luck myself doing it. I also found that if you stick a spirit behind the gate before you go out, sometimes Magni will aggro the spirit and just stand there for a few seconds.
But, I finally bested him by using heavy degen and simple kiting. Burning Arrow, Pin Down, Poison Tip Signet, Screaming Shot, Throw Dirt, Distracting Shot, etc. I got one condition on him first (Bleeding or Poison) then waited for him to use Purge Signet. The second he used Purge I Crippled him. I tried to interrupt Bear Form when I could. But in the end, I just waited for Purge and then Crippled the instant he used it. Run around and fire off degens as they expire.
If someone has done it by trapping, maybe they could post some info on how they did it? I did hear someone say they bested him with a thumper too.

OK this is my build for it (QUICK KILLER)
-Shadowsong (Communing)
-Bloodsong (Channeling Magic)
-Pain (Communing)
-Union (Communing) May/Can be swapped for Anguish
-Vamprism (Sunspear Title Track)
-Painful Bond (Channeling Magic)
-Any random defensive skill
-Any random defensive skill
Attributes:
Channeling Magic = 12
Communing = 12
Defensive skills attribute = ??
When you start set out all your spirits and then run in and cast Painful Bond. If you are facing Razah, or any other spellcaster you may want to place your spirit like this (So you can kill them before they can summon any spirits, or cast any protecting skills)
(Note. I am on the enemies side facing the starting point, just to get a clearer view)
Also if you are a warrior you should try to use Gladiators Amour, for its energy.
Weapon = Hourglass Staff, or any good energy giving weapon.
Winning the tournament!
Note. That when you are VSing Magni the Bison, u should set out your spirits so that they are in a corner and that Shadowsong is blocked by another spirit (So that if Magni breaks down a spirit he'll then have to move to it, you can also do that and stand in the way, whilst using your defensive skills. Enjoy! ^^

For rangers (wins 100%)
OgcUcRMm5/R6W3aqGXiIGCHoGpZA
I got every enemy first try with that build, and at last enemy (magni) you need to first shoot a poison arrow, then after he uses Purge Signet you cripple him and attack&kite.
When criple runs out poison again, wait for Purge and repeat.
