Okay, I've been looking forward to this preview weekend for GW:EN for quite awhile now. And I was so excited to log on Friday night and take the quest on my warrior to get her to the Far Shiverpeaks. I go to the crevasse outside of Lion's Arch and enter......to sit and wait on a loading screen for 20 minutes.....wow. Let me tell you, an event weekend goes down the drain fast when I have to sit and wait to load a new map for 20-30 minutes every time I go somewhere new.
The load times this weekend have absolutely ruined the preview for me. I've spent 90% of my time downloading maps and only about 10% actually getting to play them. That sucks big time. And before any of you say it, no I do not have high speed internet and no, I cannot get it where I live. So I'm force to sit and watch load screens for pretty much the whole duration of the weekend event. BORING!
And another thing that has really disappointed me this weekend is the Hall of Monuments. Mini pet customization, titles requiring high PvP titles (I don't PvP), and the hero armor crap are just a few of the downfalls of the HoM. I thought the HoM was gonna be something cool where I could show off a lot more stuff. Big disappointment.
Anyway, I just needed to vent some frustration. The preview event has really angered me this weekend and has not started me off on a good note with GW:EN. I hope this doesn't sound too much like a flame, and if it does, then I'm sorry. I just had to get that off my chest.

-image download is your friend, seriously
that makes you download all maps at the same time, much more handy then download 1 at the time.

I agree with the loading times on Friday, I have fast connection but was still a hefty download during the mess rush to be the first to GW:EN. Once you have all files it's back to normal loading times.
Think my sister had it worse though. She was sooo looking forward to this weekend (she's a big Gwen fan follower). She lost connection a couple times as we're making our way to the Eye after Boreal Station, but she restored it fairly fast.
Then, right when Gwen appeared in the first cinematic when you arrive at the Eye, she got the Blue Screen of Death. That's the end of her preview weekend, she didn't even get to hear Gwen's voice. (She filled out a support ticket with Anet, for some reason GW is causing a machine check error.)

I imaged it in just a few mins, it was only 1000 files or so. Load times and lag were minimal for the few times I played. I have to say tho that although it's supported people who try and play online games on dial-up connections are kidding themselves that it's gonna work. Sure the latency is the same but you just can't download the updates on the fly.
I now have an 8 meg connection (I get ~6 megs constant) and it's made a big change from my old 2 meg conn so lord knows how bad it is at 0.05 megs!!
My problem was that ebuyer failed to send me my new gfx cooler so I can't play without my pc shutting down. Needless to say when it comes on Tuesday I'll refuse to accept...I've already written to them demanding a refund.
Anyway by the time the full launch comes they should have worked out all the bugs so that you can play properly, you couldn't go too far this weekend anyway so just put the launch weekend aside to complete it in one go!

The only problem with the -image option and the lack of high speed internet, means it could take a long time to load. If you are paying phone time for that download, that could suck.
In this situation, it might be worth going to somewhere to download using the -image option to an external hard drive. Then take that home.

look on the bright side, sure you preview weekend is in shambles cause of the load times, but if you end up getting gw:en, you won't have to wait much for those areas you've already been too, lol. And, yeah i got dsl, but download times initially were pretty bad, imo.

Check this page lists all the command lines and tells you how to use a shortcut to GW to do it..

I used -image and have hi-speed and it was still taking an average of 6 minutes to load each town and 4 to load explorable areas. Also, half of the times I entered dungeon-type areas my skill in slot 1 just disappeared. The only to get it back was going back to town and equipping it again. That kind of sucked since I was playing an all-adrenaline build with "rage of the ntouka". Other than those issues, I enjoyed the weekend and I'm looking forward to the full release. I think aNet's done a good job, they just need to work out some kinks.

I used -image, but it didn't load any GW:EN stuff. maybe its cause i didnt preorder :P

Actually, I used the -image option on Thursday at around 9pm (CET), and it downloaded everything for me, I had no download problems all day.
About hero armors: yeah it's kinda shame, but since HoM is for your Achievments, simply just getting a hero (which you can do by people running the storyline for you) won't really do. On the other hand, armor pieces are tradeable, so it's not that good either, but it kinda works. (I have Dunkoro, Melonni, Jin, Koss and the Animal Companion statue...)

Well, paying while playing would suck too. As others have mentioned, online games aren't meant for dialups or connections with a per minute charge...
I pretty liked the event. I'm sure now I'll love GW:EN (though I've already found an aspect I won't like...), it even convinced me I do need some 15K armors (you can only show them in your HoM - or can you put your GW:EN armor too?)

Same thing happens every GW campaign, you have to download the new content. It's not Anet's fault your internet is slow (Well I think it's slow "10% paly 90% load")
So you're really only dissapointed because of the Hall of Monuments.
The HoM isn't meant to be easy to fill, it's for hardcore players that pour their lives into the game.

...which would be light-scamming. You can't show off minipets customized for others. (When you place it in the hall, the minipet itself will be customized to your character - even your own other characters can't have it around or put it into HoM...)

I think that Pickletron was getting at how you could just buy and then sell the minipets instead of actually owning them or getting them as bday gifts
