Return to DDO

Like many of you, I look forward to the latest MMOs and buy them immediately on release. DDO was no exception. Being a long time PnP player, this was thought to be a dream come true.

That dream was crushed 3 months after the release of the product. Three serious flaws forced me to look elsewhere for entertainment: Group dependency, lack of quests and no PVP. After 18 months, the flaws are no longer an issue so now I'm back!

There is a tremendous amount of solo'able content. Not that I am anti-grouping, I just have a big problem waiting around for an hour or more to get a good group.

There is also lots of new quests. In fact I have done several of the beginning quests and made it to Level 3 without having to repeat any of them. Even better, my wife and I have completed them all with just the two of us grouping. However, we are both very good at character design and that helps.

There are PVP arenas! It's not the full-blown PVP, but some is much better than none at all. There is nothing cooler than using the best character creation/customization system to date, mixing and matching classes/abilities/feats/skills and testing them out against each other. Love it.

This Labor Day weekend, Turbine is granting +50% bonus XP on all activity. It would be a great way for you to get back into the game.

Remember, like every newly released MMO, the content is always limited and there are always problems. Sometimes developers are thick-headed and it takes them awhile to realize their mistakes and correct them. This is not always the case, but in DDO it looks like they have finally pulled their heads out of their arses.

Lastly, I just want to make a blanket statement for all newly released MMOs. They have to start somewhere and that usually means when they are released, they will be very limited in content resulting in frustrating moments for the players. My advise is to wait a year after release of a MMO before becoming an active participant. With that being said, Age of Conan, I'll see you in October of 2008 as the world of Eberron needs taming.

Hope to see you around Stormreach,

Z

RE: Return to DDO

Great post Zoch, I missed the release on this game and appreciate your perspective. So after your return it will be interesting to hear how you feel about the game now. I definately hope to check this one out someday as I loved the old pen and paper game back in the day.
