Microsoft "We have a problem"

Everyone hates Vista's User Account Controls...it goes without saying that if you have Vista you dispise these. They are a flaw that until today Microsoft would just not admit! Microsoft and their employees have maintained that they are a feature that improves the product and we as consumers just have to adjust to them. But, this week we finally win the war! Microsoft has announced they have endorsed another company's hot fix for these User Account Controls.

The company that Microsoft decided to endorse is BeyondTrust. They have developed a Privilege Manager to work with Vista's policy management in version 3.5. The newest version is designed to let corporate IT managers run their users in a "least privilege" environment by eliminating most of the UAC prompts they might see when running Windows Vista.
QUOTE

Microsoft recognizes that to help create a secure, auditable and compliant enterprise environment all users should be Standard Users and ideally not have administrative privileges or access to administrator passwords. . . . I am pleased to see third-party security vendors such as BeyondTrust improve what is already our most secure business client OS, Windows Vista. The combination of elevating approved applications transparently with Privilege Manager and running UAC in no prompt mode with Internet Explorer in protected mode provides a best of breed solution to the least privilege problem.
~Austin Wilson, director, Windows Client Security Product Management at Microsoft

Microsoft for once admited that the User Account Control is broken. Scott Fulton at BetaNews says that Mark Russinovich, Technical Fellow and one of the most widely respected Windows experts in this quadrant of the galaxy, isn't down on UAC but he's concerned about the kind of on-the-fly escalation of privileges that UAC both requires and enables.

As for the rest of us, we just dont like the pop-ups and run as admin annoyances. But BeyondTrust PrivledgeManager is not a help for everyone...maybe Microsoft will fix it soon now that they ADMIT there is a problem? Remember admition is the first step to recovery.

RE: Microsoft

Meh I've disabled my UAC, it is just an annoyance. Good news though for those who do actually want to keep UAC on, also good news that Microsoft are actually willing to admit wrongs (if in slightly euphemistic words)!

RE: Microsoft

Meh, I'm still using XP, and I doubt I'll never even get Vista. I despise it just 'cos I think I think it was a bloody cheap trick from Microsoft. It's just made for trying to monopolize the computer markets with that all new soon to be "Vista Only" Stuff like so many new games and all.

It's still the crappy ol' windows with a new look, nothing more to me. Works even slower and eats more memory than the good old xp without any actually useful benefits.

Sorry, I'm cranky. :P

RE: Microsoft

I've given up on Gaming on Laptops with Vista on it. I keep running out of memory and Vista freezes and kills the game.

vista should be streamlining your graphics processes so it doesnt freeze, its probably the video card or ram actually. you have to have a really high end laptop to game without having issues with it, I got a high end one and still upgraded the hell out of it before I really gamed with mine...mmmm trackpad....mmmm...

RE: Microsoft

Honestly, I don't know what people's issue with Vista is.

Both my desktop and my laptop have it.

Desktop
-2x8800 nVidia graphics cards
-4 gb Memory

Laptop
-Don't recall the type of graphics card, but it came standard.
-1 gb Memory

True, it does run slower on the laptop, but it obviously isn't the fault of Vista.

RE: Microsoft

Meh, my standard is 2g on anything at least, especially with Vista. 1g or lower is just....bad news. Also, you must have a graphics card to play WoW, or it is truly a wasteful piece of trash. Grab some RAM, and SHOVE it into the computer, and POUND the power button til things work out. Violence solves everything, TV said so. Particularity those Power Rangers....mmmm....Yellow Ranger....wait....oh knoes! I've been found out.

RE: Microsoft

I use Windows Vista AND Ubuntu Linux on the same PC, for me Ubuntu runs WAY faster and is more secure than lil ol vista over there sittin in the corner bullying wittle linux. Google Wubi and download it and now you can dual boot windows and ubuntu, its REALLY cool! :D

I will not be that active in the gameamp community anymore since I really don't play that much games. The only games I play are Regnum Online and Assault Cube. Both Free. Now I am focused in doing linux and server management, so, it has been good. Call me if ya need me 732-668-1280. Thanks!

And I would hope linux runs faster considering it should not be doing as many processes at once...but yeah if people have the know how linux systems are always great, but the problem is most people can bearly turn on their computers let alone use linux...are you expecting a miracle over there skate? :-P

RE: Microsoft

Miracles are fun to make happen. But like I said, have 2gb of ram, and you'll be good for practically anything! I pulled off a miracle with my lil ol' Scratches today: Main tanked Ramps at level 60 without dying or letting one else die. Other highest level was 62. Never lost boss aggro. So yes, as far as I care, miracles happen on a daily basis. I'll have to wait til tomorrow to complete another Daily Miracle quest though....guess I could wait on lottery numbers for another day.

My dad uses Ubuntu linux, I admit hes a computer wiz but, it's easier than you think. The point of ubuntu was to make it installable/useable for real people (not just cyborgs) Also, Linux has the ability to play games, don't know the exact details but I know that linux will play most games just fine.

RE: Microsoft

this happens all the time whenever programs like vista or xp come out at first the program is hacked by everylittle peice of crap that spend there time stealing ppls accounts, making cheats for games that good people have worked their asses of for and looking at everyones personall stuff!! and then the windows people come along and fix it and then it happens again until eventually, probaly on the second or third try, it is impervious to hacks. so this is why big companies like windows should wait for their programs to be 100% hack, spyware, adware and keylogger proof before they start selling it on the open market just so they can make a but of money when the buiyers have to buy a whole new version!!! this is just another thing that really pisses me off!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Microsoft

When it comes to Vista and Laptop Gaming...I'd recommend at least 2 Gigs of RAM...Vista requires one 1 gig by itself. That's why I tend to avoid gaming on my wife's laptop. She won't let me add any RAM, and with the Vid Card borrowin' RAM, Vista sucking it down as well, the 1 Gig she has in there just doesn't hold out for very long before I get the "Computer out of memory, please close all programs and start over" error.

Honestly, I don't see the problem with Vista. It's the other things that have a problem with Vista! All the things I do/play are compatible with Vista, so I love it! Plus, I'm the only one that uses my laptop, booyah!
