| Is healing aura worth it? |

|

I'm honestly not sure if the power is worth taking at all for a Defender who can just skip it and go straight to Heal Other. I mean, I can see that it could have some obvious uses but as a general rule I have never seen a group stick close enough together for me to make much use of the power. Granted my experience is on the villain side with powers like Dark Miasma and Transfusion (although at least the melee people are generally in range of Transfusion) but I don't see this power really being all that useful.
A tank is normally the one who should take the hits unless you have AoE crazy people who need to be killed off anyway when they realize they have no clue how to manage their own aggro, you know who I'm talking about...*watches 3 AoE spells go off in the first 3 seconds of combat*.
So is the aura really that needed?
This is my prototype healing/dark build

If you have an empath defender and pass on healing aura I would kick you off my team. It is critical for keeping everyone "topped off" as well as your target specific heals. I rotate between the two while one is recharging, especially in a tough battle. Get it, you'll regret it if you don't.

Never miss healing aura on a defender. People expect high heals especially from empaths. Granted with a good tank you should have only 1 target to heal. But while your recharging your heal other you can use healing aura to keep them topped up. I agree with Randy7 if I had an empath on me team with no healing aura they would be on a quick route to kicksville. And i'm certain 9/10 teams would say the same.
+ healing aura is your only self heal. Go figure.

More healing the better!
Most of the time you might not need it, but when you do it can make the diffrence between people kissing the crete or prodding buttock.

Depends on your playstyle...erm...sorry depends on the playstyle of your team.
=P
If you have a good aggro-tank, focus on him and everything is fine.
If the team is pretty jumpy and runs around a lot, healing aura is a waste.
But I know a lot of teams sticking together pretty tight and a lot of squishies manage to grab aggro of the tank or getting hurt by AoE attacks.
Especially tontroller pets benefit a lot from healing auras.
Of course it is much safer to hang back and heal from a distance.
So you avoid getting hit by AoE or getting mezzed by a Mass Hypnosis -sleeping healers, dont' heal well^^.
And of course....the Rikti mothership...gosh...you just have to spam healing aura, cause you don't even see all the heros in need of health.O.o
I'm playing my own Empath without Healing Aura, but I avoid playing in big teams (<6), you just can't keep up healing.
You have to know what you can do and what not.
And be prepared to get bad comments, or getting kicked from a team.
A lot of people out there can't adjust their playstyle.
You can try just build your own teams.
And your searchcomment shouldn't say something like "full empath" or "experienced healer!".

I am also going to say that it is the only healing power that will effect you as the healer.
If you are out of inspirations and need to get healed, Healing Aura will do that. You don't have any other powers early on that will effect you and get you health back.
Later you can get Regeneration Aura, which will boost the health regen of everyone around when you activate it (you included), but it has a slow recharge time.
Bottom line... if you want to be able to heal yourself as well as heal more then one person with a nice amount of health, Healing Aura is a must.
Swiss
Also, here are the powers I would choose through level 20. I Didn't go much past that because I am not sure what the different Dark Powers are and how they affect the team and enemies.
I am a big believer in an empathy defender is pure Healer. This is a team build not a solo build.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that I'd kick you. But I'd find an excuse to leave the team if the Empath had skipped Healing Aura in the build. There are a lot of expectations the community puts on any player that chooses Empathy.
If Healing Aura is seeming to be ineffective because the team doen not stay near the healer or in line of sight, then take some initiative and direct your team so that it does. You should be using this as a ranged player heal as you, the Blasters, Controllers and other Defenders hang clear of melee range. You can heal ALL of them while you keep Heal Other and Absorb Pain for the melee classes.
I know that aggresive players can make your life difficult trying to use this to keep them topped off or within acceptable tolerances because I'm one of those aggresive Blasters that tends to forget about LoS and range to my healer. I get "directed" by them plenty. You might not be the team lead, but the group does have to take a little direction from the healing staff for their own survival.
Absorb Pain is easier to leave out if you are hurting for power selections. We all have that problem. Too many good choices, not enough slots. Due to the detrimental effect, I see Absorb Pain kill more Empaths than the mobs do directly. After the healing block hits and the ranged players start taking AoE shots, you could be in trouble. But a Smart healer knows when to use it and not get themselves killed. It is one big ole nasty heal!

Meep, alright then, thanks for the advice so far. I have a new "test build" and was wondering what people think. The powers are in approximately the right places as far as when I want to get them, but since I've never really run a defender before any re-arranging would be appreciated if it helps to increase the builds potential. As to why Heal Aura is so late in the build, I still think the power isn't worth taking at least until you can pick up SO's for it. I could still be easily wrong of course.
Slotting I'll figure out on my own after I mess around with the build a bit, right now my biggest concern is just getting my powers in the best order of importance as possable. I'm not 100% happy with the way they are set up now so I'm hoping somebody can help me out. Thanks again in advance for all the help.
Oh, as for the builds purpose. It's a primary buff/healing build with some attacks tossed in so I have something to do when nobody needs healing. Generally i'll only be grouping with 1-2 other people at a time. It's still built mainly for support and for getting a good string of attacks to keep the penalty to accuracy on whichever targets they are hitting.
I wasn't honestly sure if going for the accuracy penalty was the best course of action though. The resistance penalties of sonic, the defense penalties of radiation, and the recharge penalties of psychics all seem like they could be fairly valuable also. Picking a secondary has been driving me nuts. I figure being able to use Fortitude on top of Maneuvers would make dropping the enemies accuracy just that much more painful, so thats what I have right now.
I'm also not sure if I need Temp Invulnerability. I avoided taking AoE powers since the last thing I want to do is draw aggro to myself, but I couldn't see much else worth taking. Don't really need Conserve Power as far as I know, so...dunno.
Thanks again for all the advice.

Build looks pretty good to me. I personally however would switch the positions of Healing Aura and Absorb pain. As early game healing aura would be more useful. Plus having a self heal really boosts your soloing ability.

It seems to me that you want more of a team support hero instead of a Healer. I wonder if you might be better off going with a different type of defender?
You are only going to have 2 single heals up through you 20's. The majority of the support that a team needs at the low levels are healing, resurrection, and recall friend to teleport dead or dying teammates out of the fray. By the time you take resurrect and healing aura and recall friend, most teammates won't need that type of help as much.
From the look of your build I would suggest you take a different type of defender. That way when you get on a team they will not see you as a primary healer but as the team support that I believe you want to be.

First of...I totally agree with swissarmy.
Try something else.
2nd...don't go into the leadership pool that early.
Leadership will suck a lot of endurance and pre-stamina it will be a problem.
3rd...just 2 attacks are not enough!
You will be negligible in combat.
What are you?
A cheerleader?

I would have sworn I mentioned this earlier, but after going through the thread I can't find it. I mentioned it on another one I guess then. I feel kinda bad >_<
The main reason I have the two single target heals is because for the most part I only plan on being in a team with one person (I don't plan to solo at all, my brother will be the one I play with). He's going to be doing a BS/Regen scrapper which can already mostly solo anything in the game. Me being there to heal allows him to cleave his way through the AV's he could not solo before (he could already kill a lot of them on his own outside of the Clockwork King with all his psychic powers). You could be right that I need to look at another type of defender, I'm not sure. I tend to enjoy playing the healers, and I know you can duo your way through most of the game other than Strike/Task Forces. Not sure.
Anyway, all the advice is appreciated, i'll be going through it while I make modifications to my build (and possably power set). Anything else you want to add will of course be looked through also :)

With that additional information, yes I can see why you would just choose those single heals then. I would still get healing Aura somewhat early because that is the only thing that will heal you (except for inspirations).
I take back all of the comments I made about the build. You are right that a build for a Duo teamup is much different then a team build.
Also, if you put some Endurance reducers on the Leadership powers you might be ok if you are running at a higher difficulty and you brother takes a lot of damage. Remember, the defender's endurance cost goes down the more damage the party is taking.
So, if you are running missions with same level enemies you might not have much damage being taken and endurance will go quickly, but if there is lots of damage being dealt to your party, your endurance will last much longer.
Good Luck

As a healer, I generally only have 2 or 3 attacks. Most of my power choices are team based. There are missions where I may not attack much at all because I am keeping 7 other people healed and ready for battle.
It looks like he is taking whatever he can to make his brother more effective in battle. Endurance might be a bit of an issue, but he is letting his brother do the damage dealing.

I got what your saying Codexia, and your build looks good to me. The only thing I might recommend is a different secondary. Maybe Sonic for the damage debuffs, or Psychic Blast, since most baddies don't resist it, especially in the higher levels, when they are virtually immune to other damage types. Psychic especially is a good set. Just as long ranged as dark but, in my opinion, more naturally accurate. And ALL the attacks have an exceptional range. But if your sold on dark I'd say go with what you got. Looks good.

If your duo'ing i would still get healing aura early to avoid being killed by unwanted aggro. As scrappers are good at holding aggro but you may get a few stragglers.
I definatly agree with LordStarwolf in the fact that you may want to go with a different secondary. I'd advise sonic. As it lowers enemy defences making that broadsword really cut through. Dark blast is ok. But is one of the weaker attack sets (I have it on a corrupter and i wish i'd picked something else)

i definately agree with Guitarstevo on getting sonic. maybe sonic/sonic. if you plan on duo'ing avs with a scrapper and defender, then u will need some big debuffs. if he is a BS/regen, then he can most likely handle his healing. but the sonic will make him get hurt a lot less, and allow him to deal way more damage with each attack. with regen as a secondary, he only has one toggle, and 2 staminas, so endurance wont be an issue, neglecting the use for recovery aura in empathy. also deminishing AB's recovery boost effect.
with sonic, he has resistance, not emp's healing, so 2 shots (1 shots are no longer possible) will be far less likely, and he has more time to hit reconstruction or DP if a 2 shot is close.
the odds of getting enough damage to kill an av with a duo consisting of one damage dealer and an empath is slim to none. they will regenerate too quickly with that damage. but debuffing their resistance, (same as boosting your damage) will allow you a MUCH bigger chance of killing them.
to put some numbers on sonic down, heres the buff/debuff you can get.
with sonic barrier, sonic haven, and sonic dispersion all being 3 slotted for resistance buff, his resistance will be at 54.6% to all damage, except for psi. thats higher than most brutes can get theirs (minus tier nine powers).
then on the debuffing side:
sonic siphon reduces resistance by 30%. with disruption field added to that, theres another 30% being reduced. that makes your scrapper do 60% more damage and can get above the cap, because its resistance debuff, not damage buff.
on top of all that debuffing, if you get sonic blast, each attack you fire off will reduce the enemy's resistance even more (20% per attack i think). i think it is also possible for the attacks' debuffs to stack, meaning the same attack used twice will do -40% resistance. thus, making avs squishier than a henchless master mind.
ok, not THAT squishy, but you get the idea.
so thats my long rant on why you should go sonic/sonic instead of emp/dark.

Yea, I do apologize for not mentioning the duo earlier. I really did think I had posted it.
As far as when I take certain powers, as I said the build I listed was more a list of what powers I plan on taking and not exactly where they are in my build. That list can be re-arranged big time before it actually makes it into play.
The reason I was using Dark was the accuracy penalty to the enemies, which would be good with the defense bonus from Fortitude. I was going to take psychic originaly because I liked the powers but I heard somewhere that psychic is actually almost universaly resisted end-game, but I see you saying it almost never is? I have to ask which is the true one? And of course, just how much attack speed slowdown is psychic? Is it really noticable? As far as Sonic goes, I may give that secondary a shot just to make his broadsword do even more damage than it already does, but I definately need to know how sonic blast stacks with repeated attacks/multiple different sonic attacks. I was considering radiation also of course, but hitting the enemy never really seemed to be a problem for his scrapper.
As far as my primary though I think the buffs from Empathy may be better suited to a regen scrapper. Regen Aura, Recover Aura, and Adrenalin Boost are all more regen on top of already powerful regen.
I've watched his old character solo arch villains at level 50 (his old was Dark/Regen though, not sure if his Broad/Regen will be less effective? Buildup seems to rip things apart). The only problems I've noticed he had while fighting AV's was his health just wouldn't recover fast enough. Even maxed out with regen powers his health would still slowly creep it's way down to 0. With the extra regen I can add on top of his I think he may never die, lol. Granted I can see the benefits of sonic primary, but...to be honest, whenever I play a buff/debuff class I always play the healer. I just feel more comfortable being able to make HP go up, lol. When I see HP go down and I have no way of stopping it it drives me nuts, I never play classes that have 0 healing capability.
As far as damage, at least with his Dark/Regen he is able to drop an AV on his own. It takes some time but he can do it. I'm not sure if Broad/Regen has a large difference in damage, it does seem that BS does more damage than Dark, but that may only be due to low levels with enemies not resisting lethal so much. Build up + Fortitude though may makeup the difference. I honestly don't know, is there a huge difference between dark and BS at endgame? Or does BS become impossable to solo with?
Once again, thanks for all the help :) I look forward to seeing more replies.

dark does a lot less than broad sword. and as far as healing goes, you could just pick up aid other at some point.

Does anybody know if the Damage Resistance Debuff stacks for Sonic? I would guess it does from different attacks, but what if you rapidfire the same one? So far I like sonic more than Dark.
I still think Empathy is what i'll stick with for a duo definately. Being a healer with only two people is beyond useful I tend to think.

From what I have read, the Sonic debuffs do stack. The duration of the debuff is fairly short, however, so you would need to attack pretty fast to get a stacking effect. I think the lower tier attacks only last 5-7 seconds, while the higher tier attacks can last 15-20 seconds.

the attack debuffs stack, but each one only lasts about 15 seconds. all attacks debuff for the same amount of time and for the same debuff % as well.

Definately enjoying Sonic more than Dark so far. I saw psychic in action earlier today and it didn't seem to do all THAT much slowing, although it was a bit noticable. My brothers BS scrapper is ripping through things I debuff so fast I don't even get 2 attacks on them :P[/U]

Glad to hear it. I'm rather fond of both sonic powersets and think they are underrated.

I still don't think that Empathy is the way to go.
You will miss the real useful tool in the lategame.
You can tell us about it in some time.

The main reason for Empathy (other than the reason I always have to have a healing power or it bothers me) is the two main buffs, although Fortitude is the one I really wanted out of it. The accuracy boost it gives along with the rather massive defense boost was to good to pass up. Since there's normally only two of us, making sure he always hits seems fairly important. Who knows, eventually I may get bored and start another Defender but I tend to like healing. I do prefer buffs to healing, but the buffs in this game don't last long enough to not annoy me with constant recasting or maneuvering for position (like kinetics having to run closer or farther from the enemy or party). Sonic wasn't as bad, but I'm not sure how well that would work in a Duo. That, and it has no heal, which as I said, always bothers me.

I think your good now. emp/sonic will work real well. And as far as the end game, AB is the bomb. It will make the scrapper tougher than a tank, as long as it lasts. Combine that with forts boosts and the scrapper will be able to take down anything. Hmmmm, I might have to get my friend to break out his scrapper and my 50 healer and test that.
