Since I have been watching pro players, I have noticed there are two kinds of dodge jump. One kind, the way I learnt, is to hold forward and double tap left or right then jump. But I have recently noticed many good people, especially in DM, do a forward dodge jump (hold a left or right and double tap forward then jump).
I was wondering if one way has an advantage over the other, or why it seems to be DM players who do the forward jump, and CTF players who use the sideways one
Thanks for any replies

A lot of the forward dodgers probably played quite a bit of UT'99. In UT'99, the forward dodge caused your character to do a front flip, which visually is a bit harder to hit than a regular dodge to the side, so most of the good players learned to incorporate a lot of forward dodging in their movement.
Doesn't happen in 2k4, though, so the side dodge works just as well. If you want to experiment with forward dodging, just keep in mind that it can feel *really* unnatural at first, because it's the exact opposite of the way you're moving now. Once you get the hang of it, though, it's just as easy.

Chu is right, if you kill someone in Rankin at link/bio then move to 50 shield because you know they will go there once they spawn at mini. Cnce you go up the ramp and get vials its best to hold right then spring forward because you will not have to turn as much and this will result in an easier combo.

Dodges create different results depending on how you execute them.
Side dodges done at certain angles will move you a greater distance than just a normal dodge would (and are also more predictable and easier prey for shots). On the other hand small normal dodges are very fast and erratic (less likely to get you killed but don't move you about the map as fast).
Of course different people are going to have different styles of dodging. However I'd wager that in CTF people might be more concerend with covering as mugh ground as possible on the way back with the flag, unlike in TDM where their concern is being as difficult of a target to hit as possible.

I use forward dodging to minimize turning of the mouse as I move. If you turn the mouse and dodge sideways and an opponent appears in front of you, your aim to hit him will be snap left or right (depending on which way you turned the mouse to dodge).
If you dodge forward you minimize how far away you have to turn your mouse so if someone appears in front of you, the aim is more natural since you don't have to re-aim as far since your mouse stays pretty much centered as you move.
That's my justification anyways.
