I'm not going to go into a big story about the tragedy of 9/11/01. All I would like to ask is that we all take a moment to remember the lives and sacrifices of the men and women of that day. We're all part of the human family. So please take a moment sometime today to reflect on your life and the lives of those you care about, and say a prayer to whichever God you commune with, to care for the ones here with us and for the ones lost.

I was in my freshman year of college and sitting in Calculus when everything happened. Towards the end of the class, someone came in and whispered to the professor. He started his announcement like this:
"One last thing before you go, classes have been cancelled for the rest of the day..." then a roar of cheers and applause, "...because two airplanes have crashed into the world trade center towers."
The room went from complete joy to confusion and concern. At the time, I really didn't know the impact of what had happened. I lived in my own little world and had little knowledge of anything that happened outside of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania.
As I was walking back to the dorm, I got a call from my mother and she was crying. She said my cousin Jason worked in one of the towers and my aunt could not get a hold of him and she thought he had died. That was like being hit with a baseball bat right in the stomach. I have always looked up to him. I couldn't move, talk or breathe and was standing in the middle of Charles Street in Baltimore; hundreds of miles from any member of my family and all of my old friends.
As my composure came back to me, I managed to get into the dorm and turn on the television. In pure disbelief of what was happening, I thought that if I turned the volume higher then maybe the newscasters would give some good news. Because the noise was so loud and I forgot to close the door to my room, a few others in the hall had come in to watch and see what was happening.
About an hour of suspended disbelief went by and my phone rang again. It was Mom. Jason didn't go to work that Tuesday morning. I don't remember the reason because I was so relieved that I didn't hear or remember the rest of the conversation. The rest of my day was spent with a few friends that were overcome with grief, whether it be from losing a loved one, sympathy for those who had, or the sheer shock of the events of that day.

Why Karma decides to step in and guide our paths we may never know. For those who didn't go to work that day and lost friends and co-workers probably have to live with that question for the rest of their lives.
I had heard about this while I was at work and I too just simply could not believe it. I had to be told several times that this was not some sort of hoax and then the reality of it hits me like a Mack truck.
If anything, in a nation of individuals this tragedy brought us together as a family. No, I might not be your cousin, uncle or brother, but we all live on the same planet and have to find our way here together. So that makes me your brother in spirit. Before this I may not have felt that way. But now I have a different perspective on life in general.
We cannot change the past, but we can make our own future. And every thing starts with baby steps. If you think about it and the events of that fateful day make you feel sad. Do something nice for someone for no reason whatsoever. Let them cut in trafic when they can't get in. Help someone up if you see them trip and fall. SEE the world around you and those in need in it. If everybody did a little something to make the world a better place, no one would have to do anything big to fix the problems we have.
Although I pretend to be a Super Hero from time to time, I'm just a simple man and have to remind myself that it all starts with ME.
