Tricks of the Mind

Here's a quote from Derren Brown's book, Tricks of the Mind:

"I show you three ring boxes and one very expensive ring which you are trying to win. While your back is turned, place the ring into one of the ring boxes. I know which one it goes into, but you don't. Then you turn back round and I explain the game. I will ask you to guess in which box I have placed the ring. You can point to any box of the three to make your choice. Then, before asking you to commit, I will open one of the remaining boxes which I know does not contain the ring. I'll show you that the box is empty, and remove it from the game. Then I shall ask you whether you want to stick with the box you have chosen, or whether you would rather switch to the final, remaining box. If you choose the correct box, you keep the ring.

Should you stick, or switch?"

It's also been shown on his t.v. shows, and the book in general is a great read. =)

I would say stick with your choice.....often times when you second guess yourself(whether its a choice about something, or the answer to a multiple choice quiz), you end up changing from the right choice/answer to the wrong one.

re-read it, he opens the one he takes out, and shows you its empty.

RE: Tricks of the Mind

as far as i can see, there is no distinction between the 2 remaining boxes to point that one or the other is the box with the ring in it. So may aswell stick with your choice as there is an equal 50/50 chance the ring is in either box

RE: Tricks of the Mind

Statistically, it's better to switch boxes.

Initially, you have a 66% chance of picking an empty box, so it's more likely that you will pick an empty box on your first choice. When one of those empty boxes is removed and you are allowed to pick again, you only have a 50% chance of picking an empty box, but considering that your initial choice was MORE likely to be empty, you should switch boxes.

Math never was your thing, was it Matt =P

I think I know this one fairly well (we are talking 2/3 here right?), but let us get some more people to guess here. ^_^

Nice one, yes that's correct. If you switch boxes you have 2x the chance of winning. =)

RE: Tricks of the Mind

i think that the question is:
the first attempt was made, and he puts away 1(of the 2) wrong boxes.

there are 2 boxes left, the good and the wrong one,

how big is the chance u stick with your first choise? or how big is the choise u will change your mind and pick the other box.

hard to explain, hope u can follow what i mena :P

I should probably double check this but, if you stick with your first choice you have a 1/3 chance of winning but if you change you have a 2/3 chance of winning.
