| "Disconnected from Mapserver...." |
|
|
|
Ok, I got my new PC and i'm having some connection issues. I run a Wireless connection. I think i get the "Disconnected from Mapserver...." maybe every 30 minutes or so when i play. Now, i thought this was the wireless issue and maybe needed to look at changing out the router/modem etc., but this happens when i play on my wife's new PC and her's is hardwired to the router.
What can i look at checking to fix this issue????
I'm currently running:
HP m8100n AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.80 GHZ, 32-bit OS, Windows Vista, 3 GB Ram, Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430.
I already updated the drivers as I was having some picture issues.
I did all the updates that Ron posted for the Vista OS and that has helped.
Can anyone think of anything to help with this disconnecting issue?

Yeah you let me borrow some of that computer 733Tness!!
I was gonna say reset your router, or maybe you can contact your internet provider, there might be a loose bolt or nut somewhere.

What network card are you running? That might have something to do with it.
Random Noobness: I just dusted my System for the first time since I got it. The thick layer of dust lining my Processor might explain why it was heating up to 78C and why I wasn't able to run a simple n64 emulator at full speed despite my 3.2 ghz (which I'm pretty sure is overclocked, because last I checked Pentium 4s from 2003ish don't come that way out of the box). The fun part was figuring out what was wrong with the PC. Originally I thought my Graphics Card just sucked, but after closer investigation I was able to gauge my performance while playing. Then I found a probe tool that allowed me to monitor everything happen on my MB. That showed me exactly how hot my CPU was getting and let me tell you I was not pleased with what I found. Anyways, let that be a lesson to you peoples. No matter how much you think you know about computers, if you don't regularly clean your system and think your performance issues is something complicated, your just as much of a noob as the guy who formats his Hard Drive because a random website told him to.

Yeah. Dust can cause all sorts of problems via heat. I usually like to blow out and scrub my board every month or so with a soft toothbrush and vacuum.
I do remember hearing of some problems with Vista and connections, but cant remember specifics. Perhaps it is the same stuff RonJ was talking about. If I find any more info; I'll pass it along here.

i had the very same problem, i would be on for about 20-30mins then get a random map disconnection. i didnt know wat was going on and put up with it for a week or so. in that week it would sometimes happen and sometimes wouldnt, then i relised when i had msn turned on whenever the disconnection wasnt happening and i never got disconnected with msn turned on. i dont know wat the problem was but msn kept me going so i hope that helps, and it dosent happen to me anymore even if msn is turned off so if the msn thing dosent work it will probably go away in a month or so

Run a ping to like yahoo.com before you launch the game make sure you have it set like this
ping yahoo.com -t
That way it will not do a short ping and it will keep running till you hit ctrl+c. Go over that larger ammount of text and see if you get any no replies or can not connect. Then you know it may be the router.
Then do the same but wired straight into the cable/dsl modem to rule out the router etc

Just butting in here :-)
What type and model Router are you using? I understand it does both cable and wireless? Do a Google search on it and UDP streaming problems, then see if you can hook up your PC to the router by cable as well and see if the problem persists.
Why am I asking this?
Several 4-6 year old models of both LinkSys and Netgear models have issues with UDP streaming over Wireless. In case of the LinkSys models updating the Firmware helps, in case of the Netgear, buying a LinkSys router helps. ;-)
Techie mumbo-jumbo following:
What the is UDP? It's a more fault tolerant protocol than IP is. It's often used in FPS games and MMOG's for positional data, which doesn't have to be all that accurate (uhm yeah, I know. FPS games....) and other non-critical data transfer. A lot of Wireless Routers were not designed with gaming in mind, even when the Wi-Fi protocols themselves actually got 'good enough'for it from version G, or H. I forget.
The problem with Wireless Routers and UDP streaming is wider than the time-frame I provided and thos two brands, they are the most commonly encountered though.
