PEOPLE!
I'm concerned.
I remember less a year ago when I had to actually turn my team box off because of the spam I'd get. Plenty of people playing, plenty of people wanting to do...stuff! Even when I was in a team, I'd get people trying to steal me away, lol. Or hell, just standing about in Atlas having people to talk to.
Lately, it seems there are so few people playing. You can stand around Atlas for hours and see no more than a handful of the same people hanging out; usually 50s who are bored and won't use an alt, because they can't find teams.
Hell, I never thought I'd see the day when my lvl 24 Emp Defender couldn't find a team...wth!?
It seems to me like CoH is dying (and CoV isn't much better for that matter), or is it just me? Am I just missing all the fun or something? I used to love this game and it's almost heartbreaking that it's just not very active anymore. I dont even remember the last time I saw the servers above 1 star (except for the week of the event) let alone full.

It's hit or miss, sometimes I get on and there are tons of people around. Sometimes it's like a ghost town, but I never have a hard time finding a team. It might be that I'm more of a team starter also, If I don't find a team right away I'll go hunt them down one by one till I have a good sized team.

I tried that actually; I figured since I was a tank it would be fairly easy. Unfortunately, people don't wanna wait around while I find people and by the time I find another person to add to the team someone thinks up an excuse to leave ("I have to help a friend" is my favorite one).
*Sigh* I've soloed most of the levels on my Tank (43) and it's becoming a bit of a grind. I saw some of the future rumored updates that might bring people back to the game, and that's given me hope. However, I canceled my account's auto-renew until I see what changes happen and how they effect the game. In the meantime, I'll probably go back to Guild Wars when the account ends.
It's also pretty empty, but it's free :P

This also relates to the time of year. I play a lot more WoW these days than CoH. And I'm the leader of a raiding guild. Trying to get people to be consistently on for the raids this time of year has big time issues.
Basically, the real world has a lot of people doing real world stuff right now. It is true that the game has been out for quite some time now and a lot of the old timers like me that were around since release have a hard time getting interested in it any more. I still love the game, but have rarely logged an hour in months.

Hmmmm.... this is all pretty strange to me.
Last months, I've been invited in so many sg's that I can't find enough time to play with them all. There coalition chat are full of people talking constantly. each time i log there is always at least one member online at any moment.
I reject blind invites poping up as regularly as in the first years.
When I get into teams, we are always full.
Every map I go except the PvP ones, I cross someone about every 3 seconds (well I do my best to avoid everyone there so it hardly count!).
Only in special events did i ever see servers full or even with two dots green. Apart from Freedom and sometimes Virtue, there has always been only one dot activated, even when big costume contests generated Atlas Park 2. Just 2 weeks ago there were so many newcomers on Virtue that an Outbreak 2 was activated.
I do see less mass grouping of players; but I feel that it is because they are more evenly distributed among all the maps and mission sites. Remember that in 2004, almost everyone was low level and thus adventuring around the main low-level maps... so yes they were more crowded then.
Today you join an established SG and see every level represented with often a dozen lvl 50 topping it all. So I do thing it is more a mater of distribution than diminution.

These 'CoH is dying' threads are very popular over on the EU forums, go see for yourself.
The new redname, Kerensky, isnt too happy about them, so they mostly just result in an instaban, now

The numbers are still pretty active. I dunno. I expect to see a big drop off once Marvel Universe Online hits, but thats not expected until probably late 08 at the earliest.

I find it depends on when you are on. Playing from the other side of the world in Sydney, we are 13 hours roughly a head of the US. I find that I'm almost alone in the city from mid afternoon. Numbers slowly increse from there with a peak around 8-9pm. Then dropping off a bit for a few hours then getting busy again around 3am and so on. Local time of course:)

I also must disagree, although I play later in the evening to very late night/early morning I normally see fewer people, the ones I am seeing a lot of are new players those with 3 Months badges or no Vet badges. Now don't let some of the following paragraphs give you the wrong impression they are just observations I have made.
I have assisted many players and wished the Help channel in CoV that can be seen from CoH and vice versa would let you assist new players who do not know how to activate enemy chat. I have actually tried more then once logging off my CoH Char and log on my CoV chars to assist but by that time the player is often gone, probably having logged because no one assisted them.
And it's not just new players but old players and regulars routinely have Help tabs missing so they don't assist, and many help pleas go unanswered or unheard by those asking because the enemy chat is by default disabled or those who hear ignore.
Many times I get blind invites from new players who don't even know how to use the find option for teams they just see me go by invite see my level then kick or wonder why they are geting no exp, some of the new players don't even understand the (Exempt/Lackey) options of CoX.
So no I don't see the numbers dropping or changing what I do see is many pleas for assistance go unanswered, you want more players available then start helping those who ask for it. If someone needs Inf I check to see their badge list, if the number of badges is high pretty sure they just want a handout and normally won't assist.
Sometimes though I see maybe 2 or 3 badges (not even vet) and realize these are new players who could use the assistance, so I often assist if I can. Even broke I clue them into the Consignments/Black Market and give them pointers on quickly making inf for their Chars.
True it could also be old timers with an Alt account who need an inf boost (if so that's just sad.) Most people though have one account so chances are very good these are new players.
And to be honest I have been on teams with players who have 3 Month badges and can better run a team then those with many more badges who sort of take for granted that there are new players. (and I must admit I have a couple times done so as well.)
I have to check myself and realize this person didn't aggro that third mob because they wanted to it's because the didn't know enough about their Chars or a teams abilities. i.e. Blasters AoE suddenly making the entire room rush the group usually leading to the demise of many teammembers if not the team, or a Healer who waits till your in the red before dropping a Heal.
We have all been there and I am certain all made those mistakes, however another trend that no one is talking about is the PvP abuse that routinely get's used on the arena channel, I am certain this makes new players weary of asking for help and probably drives some away as well.
Your momma this or I pwn you, it's the whole reason I stopped playing FPS games (and now PvP in CoX) I got tired of the ego stroking and base often infintile insults that get thrown around like Rice at a wedding. So please if you think the numbers are shrinking look more at the reasons if this is actually the case then the effects.
And for an FYI I have played FPS based games since text based games with a PC speaker (little 8 0Hm beeping doodads) ceased to be the norm, been using computers since before premiere of the first "Star Wars" in theatres, Infact I still have my Han Solo in his original Packaging (and no he's not for sale at any price so don't even ask etc etc.)
Let's not forget it's school time again and many younger players have school work and such, if the numbers drop because they are learning something then so what?
I would rather have a slow server if the players are learning about the RL (and yes you Troglodites there is an outside world) then a server full of idiots who don't know how to change the flashing 12:00 on their VCRs or do simple arithmetic (sorry about the VCRs lol do they still even use those?)
Anyway point is sometimes the servers will be full other times not, the longer a game is around the more it will fluctuate to fit the RL schedules of many of it's players.
I for one see nothing wrong with CoX and having just recieved my 27 Month badge speak from some experience.
True still waiting for these new Hamidon raids, whatever happened to them? Lol even old timers seem to avoid them but overall the servers seem to have new players left and right and frankly I get a kick out of assisting new players and have no plans to drop CoX anytime soon.
One of the many things that keep me here is that fact that the poeple for the most part are nice, not just fake nice but real nice, you can't cheat you can't really steal from other players (mobs of anything respawn) though you can cheat during trades but that again is very rare and those who do it quickly become known and so quickly lose that ability. (I wont even discuss money for Inf scams.)
So buck up pilgrims and tighten your tights CoX is doing fine, and although I don't play on EU servers or read their threads (why would I?) I figure something similar is happening there.
Keep in mind there are a whole slew of new MMOs coming out and I guarantee many established CoX players want to try them (I am going to try Tabula Rasa myself) so this might be partially it as well, a game lasts because it offers something different, let's see how long many of these players trying new MMOs stay with them or actually drop their CoX account.

I did my "try something new" thing with WoW and LotRO, I played WoW for a couple months, it was alright, but it got tedious. Even more so than CoH does sometimes. LotRO was just bad. I couldn't get used to controls, the graphics were beautiful, but it didn't feel like a natural flow while you were interacting with thing. So it went into the pile of neveragains.
The only thing now that I think will take me away from CoH (and that's only a maybe) is MUO. So we'll see.

I tried LoTR on the 7 day trial they offered and nearly facevaulted at all the crap that's just knock-offs of other games. The classes and skills, the 'title' system (*cough* badges *cough*), etc., etc.
The graphics are attractive but I'd prefer a game that's less pretty and more fun. It's no different than the normal MMO tedium, it's just new. That whole Hope/Dread system was annoying as well; I ran into a high lvl mob and my screen flashed so much I thought I was going into epileptic shock o.o;
