The Media, and Political Satire

After the death of the RA diary, I've decided to go slightly off-topic, and try to start a trend of posting a lot more "serious" and more intellectual topics, which are up for debate. I know we are not allowed to discuss politics on these boards, so I am going to try and keep myself within the limits. With that said, let's move on.

A friend and I had a very inspiring and interesting conversation/debate 2 days ago. We where discussing political satire, after having read this little cartoon:

...Which we thought was very amusing. But then we got into a much bigger discussion, discussing how liberal the media now is, and how political satire affects this. To sum up our questions and arguments, it went somewhat along these lines:

1. Studies show that less and less people in the Western civilization use their right to vote. Do people really care about who rules them? If people are economically satisfied and live in a peaceful state are they so concerned in the political life of the state they live in.

2. Has the media (print media, TV, radio, internet) too much power in relation to politics today? Being able to focus the attention away, or onto something entire different (for those who've seen the film "Wag The Dog", knows what I mean)than the original subject is a very powerful thing the media can do. Are they abusing it, or is it fine?

3. What role can political satire play in a democracy? Are there any topics that should not be satirized? Why?

I'm looking forward to your replies ^_^. Let's try to make them as clean as possible thought, I don't want the topic to be locked.

don't get offended personally but please let's not have such political/domocracy/vote type of threads, i might sound like a spoilvictor or w/e you call it but seriously, i'm not dumb/uneducated (according to my grades)but this is really boring and will eventually frustrate people and the difference of opinions will result in flames, this is a GW forum and there is off topic but this doesn't really belong to neither...i thought i would never sound like one of those people that support site rules and post the brain-washed type of things and stuff but this is just.... idk you tell me...

The man has a point. I know you're just trying to encourage intellectual discussion, but I fear it does detract a long way from the roots of the site, and will provoke a lot of unwanted comments.

With a game that's been passing over 2 years time of play, there is a certain restriction to how many times we can debate a topic again and again. Most serious ingame threads have now been battered to death, by the use of clever math, good arguments and a fine and polite tune. Look at the daily amount of posts made here on Amp, and notice how very few new threads with new subjects about GW that's been coming up lately. They are still there, but coming at a much slower pace. And what about the guides? We used to get a lot more of them before, now we get the occasional every week. It's just that Guild Wars as a subject is starting to run dry.

I'm quite tired actually of running GW related threads lately, because there's a lack of anything new or refreshing there. The biggest debate we've had for a long time was the paragon-nerf, where to topic got closed because someone called another person an idiot. Is that how sensible the remaining people here care to be? Is it perhaps better then, to discuss something else, to move on. The Paragon thread was not bad in it's own, but when a mod closes the entire thread (instead of editing the single post that flamed) because "All I hear is the PvE people saying the nerf was bad, and the PvP people saying it was good", then something has changed. Killing a discussion because people argue (I have to say a lot of the posts where brilliant, on both sides) is... I don't know.

So GW has arrived in what we call a "freezing meta". Nothing new is going to happen anytime soon, and we are not experiencing any sort of reshuffle with new builds, ideas or development. Most people are very experienced with the game, and can agree on stuff like "mending is bad" (which would've taken pages of pages to discuss before, in the start) and move on.

I personally think more and more people show up to the Guild Wars Gameamp Forum for something completely different now. Because Amp offers something that very few other forums around here can offer:

A tight-knitted community

A tight-knitted community, with few to zero flames on an average basis. Do we want info? No, we would've gone to Wiki for that. Do we want heay metagame discussions here? No, we go mostly to Guru for that (and get insta-flamed, of course... Gameamp ftw). Look at how big the off-topic section is now, it is almost as big as the General Discussion! Frankly, the Off-Topic section of Gameamp is vital for the survival of the forum.

/endrant

Now, is it possible to get back to the original topic? If you guys want a GW-related topic, it's very easy actually. Just go and make one, eh? ^_^

RE: The Media, and Political Satire

this is still a GW forum. If people want to have a discussion about GW and some reasonable off-topic things let them. I can see where this is gonna go. You can't deny this isn't gonna turn into a flame fest. Even the Wammo threads turned into flamefests. So if you bring something even MORE serious into these forums, it's gonna turn out awful. I myself have a VERY strong political standpoint because my dad is a "Media Watchdog" and has been for his working time. I can say many things that people will disagree with but I think is true, and just some very simple statements made my someone like me can flip this thread into a thread of flames after flames. This doesn't belong here, we aren't on gameamp to debate personal subjects such as these.

***THIS POST HAS BEEN EDITED***

quit gw for good. end of story.

CLICKY!

We have already debated anarchism. No flames there. ;-)

I do strongly believe that it is possible to get this community as a whole to be able to discuss something without any flames.
