Help?

Hey all, I just joined World of warcraft, coming from Guild Wars so i thought I'd give it a try.
I started out with the 10 day trial and fell in love with it so i payed for a month and now I can't decide what class to make >.<

I like killing things fast but also not dying all the time.
preferably a dwarf or gnome as i like them the best :P so if anyone of u guys can help me that would be appreciated!

RE: Help?

shaman... or druid. Shaman do melee and kill fast, then can heal up after battle. Druids can go tank form before lvl 20, kill stuff and also heal to full health, both are very mana efficient.

RE: Help?

For dwarves I'd say ... paladin because as a hybrid you can fill multiple roles and when you don't know much about the game yet, you don't want to get invested in a character who's role you may not like later on because you didn't know any better.
Hybrids are in my opinion a bit more "user friendly", especially for beginners.

For gnomes... mage because I think it fits them best as far as look and feel is concerned.

RE: Help?

Dwarf or Gnome is going to exclude the Shaman class, but don't rule out the Draenie. As for the dying part, that's going to depend on your skill as you progress, so don't rule out any class for that. I'm a clothie and I don't die any more than the other classes.

Your forum name here, Obsidean Warrior says a little about you, but it may help for you to fill in some personality traits about yourself. I'm thinking you like the hand to hand combat of the Warrior class, but you never know. Obsidean implys the "Dark Warrior".

Do you prefer the up close and personal fight, or are you a sit back and cast kinda player.

Are you fond of any healing roles? There isn't am MMORPG out there that has enough healers, but they are a rare breed amongst themselves.

Are you into flashy weapons, or just killing stuff? That's sort of a Warrior/Rogue vs Druid kinda question.

You mentioned the Alliance races, but that doesn't tell all about your personality: Are you the good guy or the bad guy?
(Me, I'm bad.... so very bad, and play a Human.)

Are you interested in joining a group of players, or more the solo type? Correct class selection will make finding work in the guilds a lot easier, but never give up your passion for the ease of fitting in. If you totally love playing an overplayed class, just be better than the majority of them and you'll get your spot.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Give us an idea of what you like to do in these games and I'll bet this crew can get your compass pointing in the right direction. At least you've played GW that has similar archetypes, so you probably already know your preffered nitche. A lot of the overall strategy of the gameplay is about the same. Proper balance of Tanking, Healing, Crowd Control and DPS.

I play a Warlock and have always liked to RP my dark side and was a hard core Blaster in City of Heroes, so the Evil feel of Warlock and DPS potential really appealed to me.

RE: Help?

Lets see.
Priest=You can go healing (what else), holy priest(holy fire, smite based) or Shadow Priest for some DoT(they are insanely awesome but take LOTS of time to make)

Shammy= THey are insane...expecially for a CL ranking 5K+ a pop on each foe...that is if your elemental...so they are amazing for damaging.

Pally=Healadin is all it is lately... -_-

War=who doesnt know this class? especially from GW

Mage= "I'm PYROBLASTING M.A.G.E!" (song from P.I.M.P)

Hunter = I think they are fun, just send pet in fire a few shots, feign death and watch

Warlock = TOOOO OP these days... rly OP, like Nyhm! O-o

All I can think of rly... xD lmao
Anyways yea, WoW > GW these days

RE: Help?

Someone just mentioned that Warlocks are overplayed. I'm not a fan of playing over-played characters, but a friend of mine told me I'd have the most fun playing a Warlock.

What classes, races and combos are too overplayed? I'd like to avoid that if I might.

OP is overpowered. He's saying that because Warlocks are annoying to fight, because of their fear and dots. But I LOVE fighting along side a lock, they make it fun. =] If you want to play something thats rare-ish I suggest staying with your gnome warlock, I barely see any of those. Most of them are human.

And my view on Holy Pallys!- They all need to be slapped VERY hard by the ret/prot pallys and then go roll a priest.

RE: Help?

discipline priests are the least played class right now, Rogues are the most overplayed right now. People are always looking for mages too, because they are hard to get to know but once you know your toon mage is awesome.

There may seem like a lot of warlocks right now but they are mostly peoples pvp alts, most people dont start with warlocks and they are not their main character. But if you want to switch go to anything EXCEPT a huntard or a rogue.

Dru

RE: Help?

If your simply going for originality, be a discipline priest. They are the most under played spec in the world....of warcraft.

If your going for killing things fast, maybe go for a warrior, since arms warriors tear through everything.

As to people saying locks are PvP alts, most are, but mine is my main, first toon I stuck with past 10, and is now 70 :)

We probably will see a wave of Death Knights in WoTLK expansion, myself included, and if you can get to 70 before release, then hit 80, make one of those and try it out.

Anyway...I don't even know if the original post'er needed help anymore...but hey...posts ftw..

Edit: Oh and NEVER make a hunter that specs BM, BM n00bs think they are doing damage when its their pet...dang them...

RE: Help?

There is a whole other language on WoW that isn't described in any glossary I've found. BM? specs? Maybe I should compile a list of all the terminology I'm clueless on everyone takes for granted. Sort of an evolving newbie help list.

At least you're only a newbie until someone else joins. Then they're the new guy.

When you hit level 10 on a character, you receive your first talent point and you get your talent tree. The Hunter's talent tree includes Beast Mastery (BM), Marksmanship, and Survival. Depending on which tree you start putting your points into is what specifications or "spec" you choose to take for your character.
Here's a link to the talent trees to give you a look at what you have in store

RE: Help?

I'm playing my shaman again, and gawsh damn, he's awesome. I was doing twice as much damage as a same level fire mage (Yes Dru, twice as much.) And about as much as 2 Dual Weild fury (A warrior spec) warriors combined... same level.

And, my weapons are crap!!!

Updating my sig with him right now.

I know what you mean. I have been playing for about 2 months, and I STILL have no clue on some of the abbrevations!! Expecally in the trade channel in a city, its like they are talking another language! And when I ask someone what something means, the person usually gets all frustrated at me..like I am stupid and should know better. Although some people are nice to newbies, I met one person that gave me a mooncloth bag with 16 slots when I first started. That was NICE!
