YAY!!!!!

Marvel Entertainment announced Thursday that its slain hero Captain America will rise again with a new outfit and a new secret identity, after the character was killed off in March by a sniper's bullet in a storyline on the War on Terror.
The company unveiled the patriotic superhero's new look Thursday with artwork by Alex Ross and Steve Epting for the new issue, No. 34, to hit comic book shops in January 2008.
Captain America will return with his trademark shield, but he also will have some new firepower. The artists are bringing the hero back with a gun.
They mention they got the idea for the gun from an old 1940s serial. I've actually seen that serial (and no, I'm not that old!).

I don't want to go political, because that could lead to some "hostilities" again.
Let's just say, I am really sad about the new Captain America.
I liked the old one.
The ideal of america.
The america how it should have been.
I think this one heads in a totally wrong direction.

I like that they're bringing Cap back, but i have to disagree with arming him with a gun. I know that by saying that im kind of splitting hairs( he does have an indestructible shield after all!!!) It just seems that Marvels trying to hard to breathe new life into an old character(i.e. any character that's died and come back within that last 5 yrs. or so)
Cool Pic though! Just don't agree with him having a gun.

Well, I gotta say that's a nice painting by Mr.Ross, but at the same time I gotta say I strongly dislike the idea of Cap packing what looks like a colt model 1911; or any gun for that matter. Yeah he's a super-soldier and he would be highly trained in all types of firearms, but that's what was "cool" about Cap, he never needed a gun. I think this will go the way of the Knightfall storyline where Azreal took over the mantle of The Batman and promptly donned a suit covered in deadly weapons and started playing Batman more like the Punisher. Eventually Bruce healed up and came back to reclaim what was rightfully his, just like Steve Rogers will do in this storyline eventually.
PS, Marvel has already tried this stunt with Cap being replaced by a new tougher guy, and Steve came back and stomped a mud hole in that twerp, I'll expect the same this time around :)

I just noticed something, the new Cap America's costume is uses the color black in it a lot. The only thing I see that is red white and blue (represent!) is his chest colors, and his gloves, other than that its black (Legs, forearms)

The colors are supposed to be a giant shield on his chest, and yes, the rest is black. The artist said it was a hommage to some of the early Captain America looks.
I'm not sure if I like the direction they are taking CA in or not... the look is cool, but having a tach belt with regular weapons kind of de-emphasizes his super-human nature. Kinda more suited for GIJoe. Guess we'll have to wait and see how the writers handle it.

i dont know why, but i love marvel to death. Ive stuck by them from crappy movie to crappy movie, but this is just sad. Cap was and still is my fav hero. What they just did to him, its truely sad. Cap never would have used a gun. He would never used a, cant tell from the pic but a sword or nightstick,. is this Cap even a super soldier or just some guy. IF it is just a guy i could see a gun maybe. If he is a super soldier the gun is pathetic. Hes super strong, has a kick ass shield. Why a gun. I might just become a DC fan. Cause marvel just keeps "fixing" stuff thats not broke.

Although I like a lot of DC characters, I am a marvelite at heart.
I may not be American, but Cap always represented to me the noblest part of everything America claim to stand for, what they fought for during WWII, the era from wich the character came out.
Look at the old style picture: you see a poised warrior, calm but determined, jumping in armed only with his prowess, his skills and his wits with his shield ready to protect against the deadly weaponry of the enemies of democracy. He idealizes soldiery virtues of courage, strength and honor as he goes even to war without weapons. He is a super-soldier because, first of all, he needs no weapons; he wins even without killing. Even in the hell of war he is true to the higher morals of the colors he wears.
The fact that he was decked out with a shield as his only tool and weapon was particularly significant: it meant that Captain America was first and last a protector; a defender of justice, freedom, democracy and the people, the exact opposite of the agressors, the conquerors, the destroyers, the despoilers, the killers the nazis were.
Now look at the new picture; what you see is a fully equiped (not so super-soldier anymore?) agressive killer ( a gun is used to kill, period )ready to conquer and destroy his enemies...
sounds familiar?
That's what I myself would call taking the wrong direction.
That Captain America is to me just a clown-costumed clone of the Punisher, a character I personaly despise, like all immoral killing anti-heroes.
Give me high prowess and high morality Spider-Man! Give me all powerful and all forgiving Silver Surfer!
Give me back the REAL Captain America!
Oh and I saw the old serial too, with the gun-toting, no-shield Cap. It didn't even had the costume right and was done in the cheap style of the least well-made serials of the time. In those years, they could not come up with an explanation of how an archaic weapon like a shield could protect fron modern weaponry and they had no historical clue on how it could be used as a weapon. therefore they substituted a more conventional and familiar weapon. In those days, even the Batman of the serials used a gun!
So forget that version in the limbo this mediocre movie has been trown into... and just hope the upcoming movie will be faithful to the original Marvel character.

I look at it from a different perspective. Everyone is saying how Cap would never use a gun, he's a super Soldier, blah blah, blah. You're forgetting one key element there. The Cap you are referring to was Steve Rogers, who was a Super Soldier, war hero, momma's boy, exc exc. Until you know more about this upcoming Cap, it's a pretty bold assumption to say, he can't use a gun, weapon, or whatever. For all you know, it could be a regular person, wearing the costume, ala, Iron Man.
So before you get too far ahead of yourselves, and jump to conclusions, you might want to consider these things. Personally, I like the look, but I liked the Spider Man/Iron Man look he had going for awhile also.
Oh well, either way, I stopped reading back in May, to better spend my money on more important things, such as my kids and wife. :D

Personally, I find it to be a fitting analogy. Old Cap symbolized old America. Defenders, protectors of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. A country who wouldn't go to war until it was absolutely unavoidable (WWII Cap). If you look at modern america, we are the first strike, we are the aggressor, regardless of your political beliefs we brought the big gun and beat stick. This new Cap seems to symbolize the new america, and like it or not the world views us as the cap with the gun. I absolutely don't think this is what Rogers would have wanted in his legacy of Captain America, but it does seem fitting. Just my 2 inf.

Umm, not to derail this topic (since that is quite common lately :p), but I'm not sure if you remember a certain groups of terrorists, causing a little bit of a stir on 9/11/2001? And we (myself included, being active duty then), reacted to these said events. Just a historical FYI, nothing more. :)

Oh of course Doug, I'm not arguing anything to the contrary. I have nothing but respect for the armed services, but in terms of Cap analogies, We didn't bring just a shield or a non-lethal mindset, we brought a shield gun and several very explosive items. The best defense is a good offense mentality, not Caps way there.

And a little more history reveals Captain America was actually issued a side-arm along with his shield. He also killed a Nazi spy almost immediately after becoming a Super Soldier. It wasn't until after Cap met, then pres "Teddy" Roosevelt, and received the shield as we know it, that he discarded his side-arm. It's all in his wikipedia bio.
I knew I'd seen him with a firearm before, it's just been a long time since then. :)
(BTW, not trying to argue or whatnot, just sharing a little knowledge on the subject at hand.)

Well i understand that change always has to happen. I guess im just mad cause its not the Cap i grow up with. Im such a marvel fan that when something like this happens i almost take it personally. I sure in months or years to come most all heros in marvel and DC will change in some way either good or bad. I guess all u can say is with life comes change.

Cap is back that is good, Cap with gun? Well he appears now to be a Killer as opposed to a defender, then again keep in mind this is not the original Captain America so holding the new one to the olds standards is sort of silly.
Let's see how he performs so to speak, will he still be the rescue and defend or will he be the attack and rescue type.
Captain America holding a gun is playing to the current state of world affairs, one thing about Marvel and DC comics for that matter is they try to fit the ideals of the times they are published.
This is not 1945 anymore, the world is a different place and I think the writers are trying to be more "current" with their designs.
But bringing back the black seems to send a message to other countries, not only is Cap back but he wears black and carries a gun... peace through superior firepower.

Dougnukem's analysis is perfectly sound.
And that is exactly why I dislike the new version.
The character of Captain America, as reintroduced by Marvel, put modern (60's) values in perpective with the ''decency of the good ol' days''. That was one very strong, distinctive point of the character that sets him apart from all others, as much as these ''outdated values'' he stood for.
Now he stands for our modern, post 9/11 dreary life? Now he is just a star-spangled Punisher?
Then he is without any value to me, not as a pseudo-hero killer, of wich Punisher is the precursor: a villain (killer for hire following his own twisted sense of justice) turned hero only by the modern acceptance of unforgiving deadly violence as a sad way of life.
But...
The story this change may unfold could be very deep and interesting, full of yet to come ramifications and revelations that could make us sit back and think. I am not criticizing the work Marvel is about to do with the character; it may reveal itself to be much more than we expect. I am just saying that this kind of in-your-face character is totally unappealing to me... especially when done on a great character like Cap.
But that may be exactly why Marvel is doing it... At least, it is the thing I would hope for... not just another Punisher.

Then again, the picutre could be totally misleading, and he might not be even close to as violent as people think. A handgun doesn't automatically mean he going to go around "pumping villains full of lead." Marvel is known for their surprises, especially since Joe Q took over things. So hopefully, it will be interesting.
