One of my favorite toons is a emp/dark and I just made another that's emp/mind. I guess by pure healer, you mean you just want to heal? I got no prob with that, but won't that be a bit boring? I like doing a little damage now and then, and helping pin down baddies with the dark's tentacles, or whatnot. I wonder if others that did the "pure" healer had any frustrations with it.

I can't imagine something more boring than a "pure healer".
And when i'm leader, i'm not inviting people calling themself "full healer".
With only the first secondary power...and that didn't even slotted.
And they think of themself as a godsgift.
@.@
On topic...
i would recommend Psi as a secondary.
-recharge is reducing the incoming damage.
Less damage income, less to heal.

Playing pure healer is a preference set..I play a 50 Emp/Rad Defender, and I love him to death. He is sooooo much fun to play. I have all emp powers (2 rad [start and end]), leadership, fitness, speed, invis, he is a great team player albeit he is hard to solo, it is still very fun to try :). Also, you can go pure emp whilst having damaging powers, rad is hard cuz of its minor output (even though it is end light and rech is quick), choosing a secondary is also all opinionated :)

All I will say to this is that there are groups where all you have time for is healing. I may get a shot off once or twice, but the majority of the time is healing and buffing. I have a "Pure Healer" on each of the servers I play on. The lower levels are all pretty much the same. I do think of myself as a Godsgift, I think of myself as part of the team and my job is to keep the damage dealers buffed and healthy so they can deal out the hurt.
There are times when I am not in the mood to be the healer of the group. Those are the times that I play all my other toons.
If I am on a group that is not needing all of my healing powers and I am standing around a lot (because I am not high offense at the lower levels), I will see if they would rather I switch to a different toon or I might not stay with the team long. I don't want to just run with the group and not contribute.
Healing can be very fun and not boring at all, especially when you are running with some of the Gameamp crew. They love to push their toons to the max and it helps to have a healer keeping them all alive.
I must state that I am not saying that the other defenders are good, I have a number of other toons that aren't healing defenders. In fact, I was on a team recently, with someone that made me have to laugh.
He kept getting extremely upset because the defenders weren't healing. We kept explaining that both of us were not healers we helped the team in other ways, but he just didn't get it. I let him know that if he wanted a healer he needed an empathy defender, not just a defender.
Anyway, I enjoy have my "Pure Healers" and they can be very exciting and fun. But I agree that there are times when I just want to do some damage. That is why I have so many other toons (which is also why I don't have a level 50 yet (it is hard being an Alt-oholic)).

First off, if you want to make a 'pure healer', then certainly concentrate on all of your empathy powers. They are all excellent, with the possible exception of Regeneration Aura. Slot the Heals with healing enhancements (of course) followed by a mix of endurance/recharge as you see fit. A 'pure healer' would most likely choose their secondary powerset powers based on their ability to support the team by buffing allies or debuffing baddies. Pool powers that I have found useful are Concealment, Leadership, Teleportation, and Fitness.
For secondary powersets, the most useful I think for a 'pure healer' are Dark, Rad, and Sonic. All inherently contain excellent debuffing abilities. I would go for the AoE powers over single-target to debuff the most baddies per shot. Slot for the accuracy and debuffs rather than damage.
Now for the philosophy of the 'Pure Healer'. Being one is not everyone's cup of tea. When I play mine, I think of myself almost as a Mastermind. Your team mates are your 'pets' for lack of a better word: keep them healed/buffed and they will continue to reward you with xp. This method of earning xp indirectly may not sit well with someone more used to playing offensive AT's whose xp-generation is directly related to how fast they themselves can 'arrest' baddies.
I personally do not agree with sweeping statements saying, "I would never invite a person who was a pure..." anything. All AT's have a role that is governed by their primary powersets. The secondaries and pool powers are there to augment and round out the primary, not replace it. All RP and concept reasons aside, I would rather team with Defenders that defend instead of trying to be a weakened version of a blaster, a Tank that can take the damage rather than dish it out, etc.

IDK, after doing 50 lvls of an Empath, I find folks who run around calling themself "Pure Empaths" a bit insulting. Because they chose to pigeon-hole themself to only being viable on bad teams, it gives the rest of the Empath nation a bad rep. Because really, a good team isn't going to need someone constantly healing others, they should be able to contribute more to the team. It's like saying a tank who only has his first attack, and completely relies on his taunt aura do maintain aggro on him, or a scrapper who refuses to take anything that might up his survival rate in his secondary, only to ensure he is the "pure offensive beast" he thinks he is.
I mean, I'm not trying to tell anyone how to play the game, or how to spend their 15 dollars, but seriously, you have two powersets, use them.

I agree and I hope this is not contradictory to my first post. I merely think that any AT should show preferential power selection to their primary and add other powers perhaps later in their build. In the case of an Empath, I agree that, especially in the late game, heals are far less important than ally buffs and mob debuffs (or even attacking). Earlier in a player's career, though, the primary powersets should (usually) take precedence.

My comments were for a beginning empath. Das Carrot (lvl 38) has 4 or 5 attacks (4 of which are sonic which debuffs their damage resistance) and a number of other team buffing powers. But I believe if you are going with a pure empath, at the early levels the healing is usually more necessary on a team then their limited damage potential.

I agree to this 100%.
But...
my experience is that healers do exaclty that "constantly healing".
Just auto spam healing aura and an occasional heal other.
If no one is hurt, they just stand around.
(Cause their only attack isn't even slotted.)
And they start complaining when they get hit by AoEs, prefereable holds.
Other player start getting careless, just because of their personal healbot (and die all of a sudden if the healer is held^^).
That's not an Empath, that's a babysitter.
And even more worth, that's what a lot of player expect when they recruit an Empath for their team.
That's why I deleted my 2 empath Alts (1 Def, 1 Troller).

Ah, the wonderful world of healing....
Well, I'll be up front: I've never had a 50. 30 is my highest lol.
However, there are many points that I can agree and disagree with.... and take all of this with a pinch of salt. I'm human, it's almost impossible for me to NOT be opinionated.
Item #1- A pure Empath is boring.
Of course. If you wanna deal damage. Me, personally, I want to be the one that is keeping everyone in fighting condition at all times. Healing is something that can require as much careful attention as tanking, or even well-placed damage dealing. Remember, this isn't WoW, where you're in a 40-man raid that requires every little step you take to be planned out. YOU have to be the one to determine which baddie you should shoot, which blaster needs the aggro pulled off of him, etc. How effective someone is isn't determined by what powers they take, it's how they used them. Trust me, I'm the modest type, and while I have been known brag to my friends, they know I only brag because I'm good at what I do.
Item #2- A pure Empath made for bad teams.
Yes and no. I'll admit, it certainly makes my life easier when my healer can help turn a potentially bad team into a rather succesful one. But I am appalled that anyone would think that I built my toon specifically so that I could spend all nite healing 4 blasters and a troller that thinks he can tank. Lol.
No, my pure Empath was built with the idea in mind that I would be able to heal for a group successfully, no matter what other healer were available. Do I run into groups without other healers? Not often. Do I run into groups that have only one other heal... like a troller w/ Healing Aura, or a Storm defender w/ 02 Boost? Yes I do, a lot more than some people think.
No matter what other heals are avialable to the team, I can still -most of the time- provide the neccesary support to make my team a success, and my evening a fulfilling one.
Item #3- A pure Empath is not a contributing member to the team; healing is easy enough. They should get some offensive powers.
Ok, having been a healer for all kinds of teams and task forces, I will say that this is NOT true. I will concede that there are some situations where the job of healing is being so effectively handled by the team that I'm almost not neccesary, and I contribute little else outside of a occasional Healing Aura. But, a team that isn't prepared, esp. in a Task Force, is a team that will struggle, sooner or later. In those cases, I'm the emergency healer, ready to jump in and effectively "save the day". And as far as healing being easy... well, you try being the sole healer of an 8-man lvl 25 team. Sure, it sounds easy, but in practice, I've found that you needed to have either an uber-Heal Other, or complete focus, to save a teammate that dragged too many guys off of the tank. I don't have time to waste switching back and forth between the team and the enemy.
In short, you never know when something bad could happen. Sure, maybe you won't kill things as quickly, but if you've got a good healer, who cares how long the fight is? I've always been there to ensure that my team is ready if something goes downhill. Prevents panic, avoids wipes, and keeps people from stockpiling debt. I see no downside.
Item #4- Most pure Empaths being "babysitters".
Not that I want to have rivals (I'd much rather make friends), but I've read the things that Sturmwolf has posted in regards to "pure healers". Frankly, I am truly saddened indeed if Empaths are really thought of that poorly.
I know that I can't speak for other healers, but the player that Sturm described would be seen as a horrid team player. That type of person almost as bad as the player that will follow everyone around, not doing anything, but still getting their XP. These type of people are best off in their respective SuperGroups. They expect things to run a certain way. And most of you know that people that have never played with one another before are NEVER going to doing things the way YOU want them to. They'll either stick with their own ways, or with whatever is working for the team.
Now, I've mentioned how I tried to be prepared for anything. That includes how a team acts. 1st off, I never complain. That gets me nowhere, and that just spreads a bad name for healers everywhere. 2nd, I try to work with what I got. A lot of AoE holds hitting me? I'll have a number of Emerges (or any equivalent Insp.) ready to go. Team has multiple drops? I've passing out Wakies if my Revive and/or Resuscitate isn't ready (yes, I have Resuscitate).
As far as making people careless cause I'm a healbot... well, I prefer to not be thought of like that, cause I'm not running on automatic. But, I know that some people will die, and yell at me asking why I didn't heal them. Maybe I hit a debuff that slowed my power recharges? FrostFire does that to me all the time. You never know. the best I can do is help all I can. I can't control you anymore that you can me. I'll do what I can to heal you. If that's too much for me, I'll inform you as much. At the end of the day, it's still your choice whether you keep an eye out, or decide to let me handle it.
_________________________________________________________
Well! I know how to ramble... I probably could've gotten my point across without writing all that, but then I'd never feel like I explained my point of view very well. Lol. Oh, and a sidenote: I hope I offended no one. I would hate that. I just like a good debate. :-D
Hope this helps!

You describe how it should be.
My opinion is based on how they really play.
To many bad examples made me think of empath as babysitter.
It's not like I like to badmouth other ATs, it's just my gameexperience.
I would really appreciate to meet more empath like you.

No offense taken Sturm. If anything, I wish to apologize on the behalf of good healers everywhere for your poor experiences w/ Empaths. If you ever play on the Guardian server at all, please feel free to look up my healer (his name's in my profile).
Cheers!

| QUOTE | | I figure ill take all of the empath pp hasten and tp, but the thing im most confused about is how i should slot them |
Healing powers: Eather mix together some heals, recharges and endurances, or go with the sets. I personally prefer the sets.
Hasten: 3 recharge, maybe end if you can spare the slots. Some people are still using 6 recharge.
Recall Friend: Nothing but interrupt reduction. One is usually enough to have a good chance of getting it to work in a fight.
Teleport Foe: Accuracy and range, up to 3 of each, as suits your needs. Don't put on 3 of each unless you plan to 'port enemy players or +4 boss snipers.
Fortitude: You'll probably want recharge, definately to-hit buff and defense buff. I use 1 recharge, 2 to-hit and 1 defense. Good place for a defense set, too.
Ressurect: 3 recharge, 3 endurance.
Absorb Pain: Skip it. You'll have no need to sacrifice HP because you have Hasten to keep your other heals charged.
Recovery Aura: 3 end mod, 3 recharge.
Notice I still reccomend recharge on some, even though you have Hasten. That's because the recharge times on Recovery Aura and Ressurection are so long, you'll still be waiting for them to charge.

I've got a "Pure Healer" on Victory and Virtue, and I find them to be very fun. I don't babysit, and flat out tell people, that if they wander to where I can't heal them, then I might not be able to heal them.
He does have two attacks, and I use them whenever I can. They're Brawl and Neutrino Bolt. When I have spare inf, I even update the one enhancement I have in them.
As for the powers, here's what I think I have going on all of them up to lvl 24.
Healing Aura - 3 heal, 1 recharge
Heal Other - 3 heal, 2 recharge, 1 Range
Absorb Pain - 3 heal
Rez - 3 recharge
Clear Mind - I don't remember, but I think it was a recharge or two
Fort - same as CM. I'll be upping its slots later for rech and buffs
Recovery Aura - Recharge
Teleport: Recall Friend - Inturrupt Redux
Flight: Hover - Defence Buff
Flight: Fly - 3 Speed
Medicine: Aid Other - 3 heal, soon to be 1 interrupt redux
Medicine: Stimulant - 1 inturrupt
Medicine: Resuscitate - will be 3 recharge, 1 interrupt redux
And I'm still tossing around the idea of Speed: Hasten for faster recharge on the RA's and Rezzes or taking Leadership for the team buffs.
Personally, I love Absorb Pain, as do any Blasters, Tankers, and Scrappers that I team with. Nothing else takes an exhausted tanker from the red to full health while he still has all the aggro on him. The little bit of HP sacrificed for it isn't a problem if I use it sparingly, because the aggro isn't on me, and I'm not getting hit except with AoEs, in which case, I back away from the person with the Aggro that the AoEs are being fired at.
Saying things like "Empaths don't contribute to the team unless they deal damage too" is like saying "The military doesn't need medical staff because they don't carry guns, and having military doctors just makes the military careless." Best try that one again, spud. Dedicated healers don't make anyone careless. People are careless on their own, with or without a healer. You got a blaster who thinks they can tank and likes to drag mobs into the team? Kick the blaster, not the emp that keeps saving the team's lives.
Personally, I just enjoy helping out teams, and I'm grateful for their help because I can't do any missions solo. I never think that I'm "God's Gift to the Team", although I've had some teams think that, and I won't discourage that at all. ^.^
