Survey about addiction

Hi!
The concept of 'addiction' has been discussed greatly in the media relating to WoW. I think it is overrated in most cases - but: there are a few cases of real addiction. In order to find the reasons why just playing much WoW can result in an addiction for some, while others play huge blocks of WoW and never get addicted, I have set up a survey which covers many different aspects.
This survey is for my diploma thesis (end of studies paper) in psychology and is available in English and in German.
As a small incentive I have set up a small lottery that enables you (in case you want to) to win one of 3 Amazon gift certificates worth 20€.
I would like to ask all who play WoW, not only those who play much, to participate in the survey - this will enable me to see what makes the difference. If you have any questions, you can send them to pusch[at]uni-bonn.de.
Here's the link to the survey:

http://ww3.unipark.de/uc/wow-research/?a=7&b=10&c=8

Comments and ideas on the topic are very welcome :).

Best regards,

Sorokin alias Erik

RE: Survey about addiction

Hey mate, I took your survey and enjoyed it very well. If any of you guys read this I would advise you to take it. No gold selling or viruses. It is safe I assure you :D.

Bored as snot with nothing to do. As I sit here writing this down I noticed something cool, I have no life, which just excited me so much; I jumped off my chair screaming WOOT! Then my back, legs, arms and stomach started hurting and I sat back down "Dang I need to go exercise." I finished writing this down and started surfing the web again.

Hey Sorokin, first welcome to gameamp! Glad to have you!

This has been a much contested topic on gameamp time and time again and I hope you find that people will discuss this in a mature thoughtful manner, unlike some other forums.

Looks interesting.

:-)

RE: Survey about addiction

thoughtful? mature? when have i ever actually been called either of those....

but yeah nice servey, cool idea for a school project aswell since theres no real answer among media towards it but i personly have never found it addicting. just got my 360 recently with halo3 and havent looked at wow for a second since....worried that halo3 might be the addicting game there now though :(

RE: Survey about addiction

Hi all!
And thx for the warm welcome. I think there will be a sensible discussion about this :). So, what do the others think about addiction in WoW? Does it exist? Is it just an everyday phrase "hey, I'm addicted to WoW"? Do you think people can get seriously addicted?
Cheers,
Soro alias Erik

P.S.: @Mitch: the survey is not for school ;), diploma thesis in Germany equals about a master's thesis - they are changing it anyway into bachelors and masters (before only a few studies were BA and MA)
yup, I think if there is such thing as computer or video game addiction, it will be a different game and medium (PC, console) for each person that hooks them up to the point of addiction ;) but as long as you don't forget about real life, I think nobody has to fear any kind of true addiction

RE: Survey about addiction

Well I can safely say, I have a problem with WoW. I talk about it a lot and play it every time I can, I even get into trouble for not doing my homework because I am playing WoW. So yeah people can be addicted to it. My mom is for sure, she plays about 8 hours a day and 12 on the weekends. That is average count for the times we go to town and do stuff. So yeah, I would say my family is addicted to it.

RE: Survey about addiction

I don't really think it's possible to be "addicted" in a sense that you couldn't quit if you wanted to. Now, I love wow and I play A LOT, but liking something and spending a lot of time on that isn't really an addiction per se.
Yet again I feel like I'm playing devil's advocate, but I just have to say it: addiction is often a term used by weak minded people to justify their actions that they don't want to stop.

And I wouldn't call Slacker addicted from what little I picked up either. As I said: spending lots of time on something does not equal addiction. And to be honest, as long as your grades aren't making you fail in school you can neglect your homework all you want (this somewhat changes in college though, I suppose).

Man, I just know I'm going to get a lot of heat for this one. *braces for impact*

RE: Survey about addiction

Well to make things better...im homeschooled with a C- average atm lol. But I am not "addicted" if my girlfriend calls I will take off (besides who wouldn't :D) But mostly I play WoW ALOT. But uh...it helps me get out of homework and it relieves my stress, and since my mom gives me alot of stress in my personal and educational life I play WoW a lot to get rid of it. And I am taking Comp 1 in college (bet you guys can't believe that lol).

I took the survey, pretty schweet stuffs. I don't think people can be addicted to it, it just becomes a hobby. One that can make you fat and ruin your grades. =D

I'm on Pyscho's boat with this one.

And yes, Dru does have cosmic powers, she just hides them well. =]

Wow Dru has cosmic powers? I always thought she was just weird. JK Dru JK. I dunno if it really becomes a hobby for some people, just maintances with their lifestyle. Like those people who play video games 20/7. They play WoW like 10 hours and others the rest, they aren't addicted its just a lifestyle really.

I took about half of it and then realized that I was at work and supposed to be... working... Oh and I got bored and wanted to play on youtube or something. Anyway I'll probably complete it at a later time, after I delete my caffeine induced ADD from my brain.

Ok, on topic.

I did take the survey, it was pretty interesting. Now just a suggestion - please don't take this the wrong way - but I think some questions should be elaborated a little more or maybe even asked differently. It was really interesting nonetheless and I can't wait to see the results.

It asked in a social sciences sort of way, and he probably had to approve the study with his human subjects council so he could put the universities name on, we have to do that here in the united states when we do any sort of project involving respondants, even when the cultural anthropologists do ethnographies. So that is probably why the questions are phrased the way they are.

...what?! you geeky, nerdy woman you! lol j/k

That's my point, since the survey leans towards the general public it should be let's say... simpler - for the kinds of me! Yes... I mean No! I'm not human...

Apparently geekiness is sexy....one of the devs likes to sing the bionic woman song to me and everything. Ok its not exactly sing...but you get the idea...

Anyway, the questions are asked that way because they have to be asked that way, so they can't be disputed as part of the people that rip apart the dissertation. Though I get what you mean, I think however its the translation more than the wording...if that makes sense.

@Cr3ss3nt: yup, some might seem a bit weird if you don't know why exactly I asked them, but I can assure you they do have eh make sense (whatever ^^) ;)

@Dru: yup, they questions are kind'a science style - I tried to keep them as 'non-sciency' as possible ;) - well and after all English is not my native language, so if things sound funny here and there, apologies :)

Kewl thingy, just filled it. :P

But one thing I wondered was the one about my mom's stress level when pregnant. I didn't really get a) why would I know about that and b) what does it have to do with my gaming?

But still, fun stuff. Good luck with your studies. :)

Hi all and thanks for the big number of filled questionnaires!
At the moment I am searching for people that are willing to take an interview over Teamspeak (takes about 20-30 min) about gaming habits. If you're interested, mail me at subs[at]fraggamuffin.de or post here in the forums.
Cheers,

Cost me 2 semesters of school. Used to leave class early or not go at all. I took a few months off and that helped. Done with school now, so I have unrestricted funtime now. When not at work anyway. I'd give an interview on TS, but you'd have to catch me between raids, work, and drinking'.
