Technical Question concerning Gw.dat

I have a friend that has decided to get involved in the MMORPG world. I suggested she start with Guild Wars and after checking out the wiki's she decided it was the way to go, but, she was worried that her dial-up connection would be inadequate to play the game.

I assured her that lotsa people played GW from dial up connections and that the bulk of the game was played locally. The actual communications from her PC to the server would be nominal and that while she would be better off with a high-speed connection, she would be fine with Dial Up.

So she went and bought all 4 chapters from the Guild Wars store.......

Then she ran the Gw.exe..........

Long story short it took her 2 days to download enough of the game to even load into the pre-searing version of Ascalon....

She cannot actually walk outside yet as when she tries to leave town the loading screen is up for (literally) hours and she loses connection before completing the download.

I want to do something to help her out.......

So my question is......

If I break down my Gw.dat file into a multi-part archive and burn some cd's and go to her house and unpack them into a complete copy of my Gw.dat and then replace the one currently in her Guild Wars program folder with mine.......

Will she still have to download areas and such, or will she have everything there is to have ?

I know I could just try it, but it would take a good 2 hours to generate a split archive, burn 14 cd's (she doesn't have DvD) and drive over there and i don't wanna go thru all that if I don't have too =P

Any info on this'd be great! Thanks Ampers.

i've done that between computers using a flash drive. The only reason i could see your solution not working is an issue with you breaking the file up into parts, but assuming that the file stays intact, yes, it will work.

I wouldn't have suggested her to get GW on a dial-up connection. Even though what you said is true, there is still a lot of data going through her connection.

Maybe it would have been best for her to buy one chapter of GW to test it out first, before spending money on all 4.

In theory, what you explained should work, but what actually happens could be different. Good luck.

RE: Technical Question concerning Gw.dat

Right on.....

I am sure breaking it into a multi-part archive will not alter the file once it is unpacked.......

I guess what I really want to know is wether or not all the areas/missions/towns/etc etc are contained within the Gw.dat and if any Gw.dat will work with any Gw.exe...

(We have the same OS)

Yes it does work. I did it from my desktop to my new laptop (my old one wasn't capable of running GW).

I downloaded the client and then copy the dat file. I used a flash drive, so mine was intact, but as long as there wasn't any data errors in the spanning operation (and there shouldn't be) it will work fine.

My friend plays GW with a 56k connection, he came around to my house and just put the gw.dat on his iPod.
He has lag problems on Wintersday, Halloween and other large events though.

It works wonders, I always backup my gw.dat before reinstalling windows, that way I dont have to sit through hour of updates(they I usually just run it before I go to bed).

Update in whenever I dont feel lazy.
