I've been playing MMORPGs for over two years. My first was toontown, my second was CoH, my third was Matrix Online, my fourth was WoW, and than I got CoV. I switched between all of them and I wanted to try something new. I was thinking of Tabula Rasa or EVE Online (I'm trying to go for the sci-fi style.)
Does anyone have a recommendation?

I was in Tabula Rasa beta from the start of beta and I liked that game. It has huge potential to be a top game....not in the millions but a game to rank right up there with CoH/V.
It takes a bit to get used to but its a very cool game. Not too many 3rd Person Shooter MMOs. And its really not even Shooter game.....its just dominated by main weapon being a gun. You get secondary powers that are very powerful. I also love the feature of cloning the character at key leveling points to try new character builds. Gets rid of the whole leveling through all the same missions you have done.
I really enjoyed the game but its just not one that I can afford at the moment. Maybe after the holidays I will be able to get it and play it back though.
On the other side I tried EVE Online and didnt much care for it. By far this game has one of the longest tutorials of any game. It took me over an hour to complete just that section. The game is cool but I was unable to really get in the mood/desire to play. I know there are people that enjoy it but just wasnt very fun for me.

The biggest problem for me when I was playing EVE online was the fact that your character earned experience points through real time training rather than through combats or in-game interactions. It sounded cool at first that my character was gaining experience when I was off-line, but then he wasn't gaining more experience when I was online. And then I found out that in order to pilot the really good ships out there, I need to train in real time for over a month! The leveling system is a gigantic time sink. I got impatient and tried out CoH instead.

Both games are worth trying out. Although I think neithr of them are as great as City of Heroes. But give it a try, and you'll know.
My biggest drawback with Eve Online was that I did't have a real character. I had great ships, quests and tons to do, but I wanted to see my virtual me. Without it I just felt a bit lost.
The problem with Tabula Rasa is the horrible user interface. It is pretty impossible to interact with your fellow players. If you solo most of the time anyway it is not a problem, but trying to team and/or chat is a pain.
But both games do have beautiful sci-fi settings. So pick either or both, and we'll see you back in Paragon City over a month or two :)

Do:
If your are a Hard-Core gamer (and strapped for cash) try Anarchy Online. It's free (and you can pay for upgrades. It's very hard-core, things are not easy. And a lot of people will find you Gimped if you don't follow the tonnes of advice to be found on the nets, and if you do not buy the upgrades, but even for Froobs there's tonnes to do.
I enjoyed it, but be warned: it can be frustrating
(I was running around for 2 days to make an enginering gun, only to find out it was righthanded only...)
Don't
RF Online.
I tried it. After a day I scrubbed of the HD. It's a grindfest.
But still
I really do like CoX.(did he say..? HE SAID City of X)

You should try Guild Wars, any or all of them. It's free, has lots of people, and is fun to play. I currently play all of the sets out from them, so if you start there, let me know and I'll get you into my guild or alliance, since my guild happens to usually be full.

Yeah forgot about GW, it is a pretty cool game and you only have to pay for the game itself, no monthly fee. I have but the original and it still fun to play between monthly subscribe games.
There is also LOTRO which if you didnt enjoy WoW you may find it more to your liking. When I first played it, it was heavy group questing but recently its been toned back to either play style of the MMO'er.

Yeah LOTRO is always good! If you can't find anything else then LOTRO will at least get you to sink a fair bit of time into it just getting immersed. It doesn't really take a beast of a machine to play either.

Last weekend I tried EVE online with the 14 day Trial.
I had to put it away.
I played Elite on the ZX Spectrum
I Played Privateer on a Pentium II I think
EVE online was like coming home.
I could even rationalize the 30 minutes it took to reach a station 10 jumps away (brought skill books, made dinner)
But so little time.
I Like City.
I want to try Tabula Rasa.
I simply do not have the time for Eve

guild wars is definitely my recommendation. it great because i stopped playing for like a month or two, and didnt have to worry about reactivation or whatever. and, i felt like getting one of the expansions, so i logged out, went to the in-game store, bought it, then created a new character. the whole upgrade took about a minute. just remember to invert the mouse look option, its opposite of CoH, which messed me up for a while.
