First Obsidian armor set - Decide for me!

Quite simple, I'm dead set on buying my first set of Obsidian armor, only problem is I cannot decide to save my life which character I want to get it for.

I'll list what I've got, and some notes regarding them getting the set...

- Male Warrior
>Main character, deserves it the most - most titles, equipment and such - and it would be my final armor set for his Hall of Monuments, but I'm not really too sure on the look - I'd likely end up hiding the chest peice and mixing around with the rest of my sets...

- Male Monk
>Secondary main, almost as deserving as my Warrior. I've gotten the most XP with him, played him the most, and he only has 15k Kurzick and 1k farming tattoos - again, not that much of a fan of the monk armor simply because everyone seems to have it!

- Male Ranger
>First character, barely use him any more. I like the look of the armor, already have the gloves from buying them about two years ago. Problem is I haven't been able to enjoy playing a Ranger that much these days

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

These next 3 are all in a very similar situation, in that I absolutely love the armor, but haven't spent nearly enough time on them to consider them deserving of it.

- Male Elementalist
>He has bugger all skills (he was made for farming and farm he does), no other prestige armor nor weapons (just base skin golds). For him to be considered deserving I would need to get him almost all the Elementalist skills, find him some nice skin weapons, and be able to have a lot of fun playing him (wouldn't be hard if I could run any build under the sun).

- Male Ritualist
>I can't have fun with this guy. I just can't find a build I enjoy playing in PvE, and it really annoys me because the male rit armor is my favourite in the entire game. No titles, no gold weapons, I bought him 15k Imperial to try and convince myself to use him more but it fell through after a few weeks of being bored of taking care of spirits. If I could find a couple of builds that were fun to play (see also: effective and useful) I'd consider changing to him as my main, and he'd be worthy of the armor - but right now I just don't want to waste the first set on him.

- Male Dervish
>Almost exactly the same as the Ritualist, except he doesn't have 15k armor already, and I prefer the Rit armor slightly over this one.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

So there you have it, all I ask now is your opinion - who should/could be the first of my characters to have Obsidian armor?

(PS: Bare in mind that one way or another, I will be getting my Warrior Obsidian Armor before GW2 comes out, for the sake of a full Hall of Monuments with Obsidian Armor in it!)

RE: First Obsidian armor set - Decide for me!

It's a tricky one isn't it. I knew when getting my first FoW set that I definitely wanted it for my Female Monk. She was, and still is, my most played character. I loved the armour, and I used to use her all the time in both PvE and PvP, so she is well kitted out with equipment.

Since then though, I've been using her less and less in favour of mid/frontline characters in PvP, she was mainly only being used for PvE, specifically farming. Over the summer I spent nearly all my time in GW solo-farming, when I got the chance to log on, as I was too busy with other commitments to bother with the hassle of grouping for either PvE or PvP.

After this lull in activity I came back in October, noticing that I had accumulated almost enough to consider getting another set of FoW, but had no real aspiration to obtain any particular one. So, I scoured through armour galleries, trying to decide which I wanted, and eventually decided that Female Ele FoW was something I really liked. I had never really considered it as an option, as I barely ever play ele in PvE, but I had already fallen in love with the armour, so it didn't matter.

The female ele I had at the time had very few skills and no more than basic 1k armour, and looked awful. So I ditched her and made a new ele, making sure when creating her that she would look great with FoW. So I made her, levelled her, and got the last few bits and bobs, and she get her FoW set around 2 weeks after being created. Because of the process of levelling her very quickly and getting her to various parts of different continents to cap, ascend etc, I grew very attached to her, and she is pretty much PvP-ready within a few weeks of creation.

I really had no great love of playing ele in PvE before creating her, but now she is my favourite character to play. The processes mentioned above really give you some kind of bond with that character.

If you're anything like me then you'll enjoy the challenge of coming up with builds which are a bit more interesting, or tailor to certain situations. So if you love the Ritualist armour so much, then that is the one I would definitely recommend getting. Rits are so unbelievably versatile, I don't understand why they don't see more play. They have huge spike damage from Channeling, Support from Communing and Healing+Protection from Restoration. All this without the need to use your secondary profession has made them a very strong in my mind.

So to cut a long story short, I think if you were to give the rit a chance, you might just end up loving it, like I did with my ele. In the end there's no point spending that much money on a character you're never going to use, but equally there's no point in buying an armour that you don't like the look of.

Gl with your decision, that was my 2 (and a bit) cents.

RE: First Obsidian armor set - Decide for me!

my theory: make enough to afford it for all your characters! thats what im doing, even if it won't be FoW or UW armor...

or, u can try these steps: here's what i do anyway:

1. choose character before starting
2. use ONLY THAT CHARACTER to get the materials and gold. example: ur warrior wants it so bad, earn it themselves kinda thing.
3. decide, when finished and ready to go purchase armor, whether it was worth it for that character. if so, buy it for em. if not, well, u have it sittin around for another character.

i am currently saving up for 4 sets of vabbi. well, 3 now, and started a warrior recently cause i find that vabbian armor for a warrior looks oh-so schweet!

RE: First Obsidian armor set - Decide for me!

Whatever you buy it for you will play more!

I love my Necro FoW and I got it for her when she had less than 1 mil xp, I farmed most of my mats with my Monk.

Get one that you know you'll like, if YOU like Warrior armour then get it...if you think it looks like an upturned pinecone then don't!!

Thing is to check it out on someone else outside of town, FoW armour is immensely more detailed when viewed in an instanced area.

Also think about a mix. I just mixed my Monks set because I didn't want to pay a fortune for those stupid shoes and arm bands...I like it.

Might get a Sin mix next.

monk fow makes you look like a freakin clown. The chest piece is just so ridiculous. Though I hate male war fow chest and gloves I would definitely get fow for warrior than male monk.

RE: First Obsidian armor set - Decide for me!

My vote would either go towards Warrior or Ranger; both sets look awesome in my opinion. I do quite like Monk FoW, but it seems to be becoming ever more common, and it looks a damn sight better on Females, too.

But, just like Keo said, go for a set which you like. I recently got Obsidian for my Warrior, and you can see just by reading this thread how many people think it's a waste of money, and ugly. So what?! If you like a set, go for it. At the end of the day it's your money, your character and your opinion. If you base your choice on someone else's, you might just be setting yourself up for a fall. :-|

Good luck deciding! ;-)

RE: First Obsidian armor set - Decide for me!

yeah ofc the decision is his, but he wants input on which we like. Just get it for your main char, why spend money on a char you don't use. Even though it doesn't look as good as say male ranger or male rit, you still use that char a lot more so it totally makes it worth it compared to using a char with fow sparingly. If I got People Know Me on my war I'd probly finish off fow even though I don't like the rest it's just something I would do because it gives me a sense of accmplishment.

Listen this is the best advice I heard so far. Pic one class u play more than the outher * witch would be called your MAIN chacte" and make him the one with the expemsive armor It is waste to waate that much time to get all that money for armor that u r not even gonna play the chacter with.

and your point? this person obviously has the cash and mats and wants a set as do many. he's looking for the response of our opinions on what set we'd get if we could, not whether we could afford it or not.

my first pick for what you've asked about would be Male Ritualist and Male Monk.

Male Ritualist FoW is far more rare than Monk FoW armor. Both are 2 of my fav's for males, but the Ritualist FoW armor is much more rare. there's probably 300 monks with FoW for every Rit that has FoW.

being that i have 3 sets of FoW i can say that it's the best waste of undiscretional resources in the game, being that no one sees your weapons when you're just in an outpost, the first thing they notice is your armor, its color, then your title and mini-pet.

Edit: I basically never use my paragon, only as a storage character, but she still has FoW armor, simply because i liked the way it looks and i got it within 16 hours after the release of Nightfall. =)

:P if you want Rt builds, PM me sometime. =D think there's about 5 or 6 guides i've made up for Rt's that are all fun to play.
