A Survey on the Gameamp Guides Section

We (the Gameamp Staffers) care about the this community as a whole, and right now we would like to borrow some minutes of your time to answer this quick survey we've made for you. Try to answer as many bullet points you can, and if there is any of them you are unsure of, just leave them open. With new Staffers in being incorporated, we want to hear the opinions from you, and what you think about the following questions:

  • How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?

  • What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?

  • What would you like to see more focus on?

  • Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?

  • If you have ever submitted a guide, why did you do that?

  • For you, what do you define as a \"well written and good guide\"?

  • What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep?

  • Finally, is there something else you want to further comment on?

All answers will be greatly appreciated, as we wish to see what's the general opinion about the Guide Section.

Sincerely: The Staffers

1. I pretty much only read everytime a new guide bumps in.
2.The quality of some of the guides
3. I guess i would like to see a more high end guides for places such as dungeons and UW FoW
4. dont know XD
5. Never submitted.
6.A guide that explains the guide in a good format and is easy on the eyes. Plus it cant have to much text cause then i give up on reading it
7.I really like the way its on the mainpage =D and the way its listed.
8.I think there should be a way to sort the proffesions guides. Like you can click a button and heres all the Warrior guides.

thats my 2 cents

1. i read the guides fairly often, until recently becuase there havent been many

2. i think the problem with the gameamp guides section is that other sites have such a big focus on guides, potential contributers at gameamp might be put off from adding to an "inadequate" guides section

3. id like to see more focus on non-build guides. farming guides are always fun, as well as strategy guides

4. basically the guide should be accurate and well-written

5. i actually have not posted a guide on gameamp, for the reason that i suck at making guides ^^

6. a guide that has only minor typos, contains no false info, etc.

7. i like all of the guide section really. im not sure if we have a specific farming category in it(?) but if we dont we should

8. ya. but its completely irrelevent to this topic. WHEN DO WE GET THE GFX CONTEST RESULTS??? -.-

My feedback.

  • How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?
  • Every time I see a new one on the top 5.

  • What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?
  • The guides aren't very interesting it's either old farming builds, or mediocre pvp builds.

  • What would you like to see more focus on?
  • Pvp gamestyle, new farming locations and individual title guides.

  • Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?
  • As long as the content is good, well explained and aesthetically pleasing.

  • If you have ever submitted a guide, why did you do that?
  • So I could share a valuable farming location to others, I owed the community something and finally I wanted to brush up (no pun intended) on my Photoshop skillz.

  • For you, what do you define as a \"well written and good guide\"?
  • It's only good if the guide is useful so the content needs to help me in some form. It's well written if it gives clear instructions, possible outcomes/events and personal experience.

  • What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep?
  • Keep the top 5! It's the main selling point for these forums, apart from that I don't really mind.

  • Finally, is there something else you want to further comment on?
  • Nice to see staffers getting involved! =)

    Quality and the builds working.

  • Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?

The rules that Maya wrote are great. They just need to follow them.

  • If you have ever submitted a guide, why did you do that?

    Never. I might soon, though.

  • For you, what do you define as a \"well written and good guide\"?

Little, if no, typos, and the guide is effective.

  • What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep?

I like everything. Keep everything. Just the comments can be a little harsh.

Guides, a wonderful thing, i used to look after this part of the site, so being a critic is something i'm used to.

my answers to the questions are as follows.

1. everytime i log into the site i check the top 5 most recent guides and will read them if they're new. i may not always comment, but i do read every single guide that's come onto the Top 5 in the last 2 years.

2. the biggest issue is grammar. this is an international site and we prefer guides to be written in english, unfortunately the translations aren't always as smooth and fluent as we want them to be. keep 'leet' speak out of guides. spell out the full word just in case someone doesn't understand your gamer slang.

3. i'd like to see more focus on guide content than actual grammatical errors. i'd like to see more illustrated guides as well.

4. guides should be easy to understand, i know writing then comes into play in this part. do your best, and if you need to, just use points and single sentances to explain yourself if your english isn't completely stellar. by the way, spelling needs to be accurate, all computers have language modes that will correct spelling errors (some even grammar), there's no need for there to be miss spelt words. now, if you get there or their confused that's ok.

5. i've submitted lots of guides, some topics having over 50,000 views. it's where most of my cred has come from this site has been guide writing and forum posts pertaining to builds / mini-guides. i post guides because i think i have something that's fun to play, works good, and could be considered unique or informative. we all want to be better gamers, reading guides really helps. i've also read a lot of other user guides and put their builds into use and it's great!

6. to me, a good guide explains the build well enough that you should be able to put it into use with rapid success. a guide should cover every use, miss-use, strong points, low points of the build. there should be no surprises when running a particular farming build for example. there should be no gray areas. a guide is just that, a guide, it's not a hint or whiff at a build, it's a full-blown "this is how you do it" article. at least to me, that's what they are. a guide with 3 sentances, a list of attributes and a couple pictures is NOT a guide. there's no way it can explain the entire build.

7. the guide section should only have guides that follow the proper guidelines for creating guides for this site.

8. my last comment. there's no shame in submitting a mini-build in the tips and hints section of the site or in the forum under profession specifics.

if you are submitting a guide, ask yourself, if i was reading this and someone else made it, what would i comment?

thanks for reading my 2 cents

Everdream

  • How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?

When I'm looking for some info I check the guide section or wiki

  • What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?

Needs better search system, when i submitted a guide non of the 'categorys' matched. And its hard looking for the right guide without looking rhrue all.

  • What would you like to see more focus on?
As said before, a better search system

  • Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?
Dunno, Just lay out, is it clear? easy understandable. Some pics to support the story etc.

  • If you have ever submitted a guide, why did you do that?
I have a submitted a few guides. Mostly to share the things I know about GW and haven't seen/heard before about it. Like my Critical hit Guide, or the Boreas Seabed chestrun one.
Basically just to share my knowledge ;)

  • For you, what do you define as a \"well written and good guide\"?
A guide with a clear story. Step by step. good looking. With some pictures for support. and With some chapters like intro, part 1, part 2, and end word

  • What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep?
U should keep all guides, they may be inspiring for new ideas. even if a nerf made it useless. But make a better Index. and search system.
My idea: sort FIRSt pve / pvp
than the sort of pvp, or for Pve the option farming/mission info/exploring / titles

just an example how i would do it.

  • Finally, is there something else you want to further comment on?

Errr guess I already filled that in with above questions :p

All answers will be greatly appreciated, as we wish to see what's the general opinion about the Guide Section.

RE: A Survey on the Gameamp Guides Section

* How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?
Basically every time there's a new guide.

* What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?
Builds that are there to do something that another build does better. Oh also, people who don't see that their build doesn't do it as well as another build.

* What would you like to see more focus on?
Have a rule that if you're trying to make a guide for damage that you have a SS of something >2.4k DPM. Because that's a warrior using nothing but frenzy on his skillbar.

* Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?
I think the guides are very well written and beautifully created. There are just alot of beautifully done guides to idiocy.

* If you have ever submitted a guide, why did you do that?
To make more people better at the game. Though admittedly, some of my first guides were pretty horrible.

* For you, what do you define as a \"well written and good guide\"?
Anything ED does is pretty good, especially for farming purposes. However I see alot of PvP guides that really don't have a use in a team environment. Anyone can make up a build for RA. I've gone in with nothing but battle rage and counter blow on my bar and had a successful run. It takes more skill to show how to play a position than a build. Because once you know how to play that position, you can play most anything there.

* What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep?
I like when there's a nice farming build for a warrior that I might want to try at some point. Or a guide on strategy rather than build.

* Finally, is there something else you want to further comment on?
Want to come over to my place, play gamecube and watch unicorns ride over rainbows?

* How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?

-----read newest guides every few days to check the comments

* What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?

-----few builds actually work well, and do not lack variety etc

* What would you like to see more focus on?

-------making sure the person that posted a build that fails learn out of it, for future guides^^ no flaming tho

RE: A Survey on the Gameamp Guides Section

&bull How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?
every time a new one pops in

&bull What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?
Guide accuracy. I am still of the opinion the staffer that is in charge of the guides should test a build out to see if it is working, accurate and is something the community could use.

&bull What would you like to see more focus on?
Vague question; focus on what sort of guides? Focus on what sort of guides to approve?
for the first: all sort should be let through if it is genuine/working
for the second: testing...

&bull Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?
again; the build has the be useable and provide a genuine addition to the way of playing the game; builds for PvE and PvP should work and add something beneficial to the way people play the game. For instance: putting in a guide about a build that sinsibly is utter nonsense should not be approved. Don't crack down the author since he/she put in the time to make it; but something that gaines 50 credit should work.

&bull If you have ever submitted a guide, why did you do that
To share things i have found out to the community.

&bull For you, what do you define as a "well written and good guide"?
Think i have put that already in words when i made the guide guidelines when i was staffer :)

&bull What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep
As in?
The way the guide section is made/set up is allright. They are catagorised, and the search feature makes it easy to find guides concerning the topic you need information on.
If you are referring to deletion of old guides; bad idea. It will mess up the creditsystem in the way it was intended.

&bull Finally, is there something else you want to further comment on?
Nope

RE: A Survey on the Gameamp Guides Section

* How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?
when one every few weeks catches my eye and i see what it is about.

* What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?

unless its a really good guide peiople are made to feel they shouldnt have posted it.

* What would you like to see more focus on?
a teliscope

* Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?

I agree have some one test the build and I think there should be some kind of pic of the build in action. would be nice to have a vid. even if a build is bad it gets discusion going.

* If you have ever submitted a guide, why did you do that?
technically yes as I had a new idea I asked it be deleted

* For you, what do you define as a \"well written and good guide\"?

detail, the format
what makes the build
how to use it effectivly,
where to use it,
why it works

evidence of its potency even some screen shots
the replys to the post should have tried the build at least on a pvp char before making comment they should also be able to provide proof that they have tried it.

* What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep?

the search function

* Finally, is there something else you want to further comment on?

yeah, get 6 tortilla wraps, a bag of chicken thighs and drumsticks, some mayo and simply chicken seasoning from schwartz.
pre heat the oven to 190 degrees c
place the chicken (defrost first) on a baking tray thats in a large basting tray sprinkle on the seasoning and pop it in the oven
set a timer for 45 minuets
wait 45 minuets
take the chicken out of the oven (once the 45 minuets has passed and less than 50 minuets)
cut the chicken away from the bone to make strips and odd shapes.
lay a wrap on a plate and lightly apply butter and the mayo then apply the chicken strips.
wrap and eat

RE: A Survey on the Gameamp Guides Section

I am glad to see that for the most part people are happy, when Wyate first brought this idea up I was afraid we might open a can of worms here after all the negativity I saw a few weeks back. The staffers are doing their best to update the site and to pretty up the guides section so to say.

I think the first thing we will impliment is more categories so you guys can find guides easier. It seems to be the general concensus no? Anymore comments? I am sure everyone on staff would love to see them and thanks to those who took the time to post already.

RE: A Survey on the Gameamp Guides Section

1. Every time a new guide pops up.

2. I think the nonconstructive replies, no reason to act as if your the best, when if you were, why are you even looking at a guide. Tell what you feel would be better and why.

3. The guides themselves. If its a PvP guide then yes it needs to be affective but if its a PvE guide it just needs to work the way the writer says it does.

4. I think the criteria is fine.

5. Sorry to say no I haven't. I'm usually busy playing or reading stuff on here and my guilds' sites.

6. The easiness to use it and understand it.

7. I like the guides section but I do like the idea of make it easier to find them by categorizing them more.

8. not a the moment.

Thats a lotta &bull there mriswith.

Guess I'll copy over what I said in the staff forums:

QUOTE

  • How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?

Whenever I'm looking for a build, and usually when a new one appears.

  • What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?

I would say formatting it actually, we have such a high criteria, but half the people on the site probably dont know how to format the guides like some of the more advanced users. It would be so nice if we could make the guides form start with things already filled in, and they just add links to the skillbars, etc.

  • what would you like to see more focus on?

    Dont have a clue. :P

  • Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?

    Dunno.

  • If you ever have submitted a guide, why did you do that?

Yup, usually a good farming build, or something I figured would be helpful to someone/

  • With GA's usually high standards on the guide section, do you think +50 credit is a good enough reward? Are there enough of incentives to submit guides, or should there be some extra bonus to it?

I would say its plenty, Harrow has submitted only about 6 guides(ok, more than some, much less than others), and to this day he still has sort of a fame of being the ultimate 55 farmer. And despite not having written a guide for over a year, he still has people PM him every now and then about them.

  • For you, what do you define as a \"well written and good guide?\"

A guide that gives screenshots of what your farming, as well as explaining how to farm it. Such as pictures of the run to get to the farm, any certain positioning of mobs, etc. If someone does all of that, and its not an old obsolete build, its worth being on the site.

  • What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep?

    Dunno

  • Finally, is there something else you want to further comment on?

I think the search should be better refined, not for just the guides but the whole site. Currently, the search only looks at the title, beit guides or posts, it should look through the topic too. But its a little late in gameamps life to change something that massive. :P

And mriswith, when I say formatting, I dont mean like your current post, I mean things like tables, text wrapping, etc. Things that a normal poster might not know how to do unless we had a guide on it.

RE: A Survey on the Gameamp Guides Section

* How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?
"When ever there is a guide i need to read. Old or New.

* What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?
Inactivity, there has hardly been any post in it for a while

* What would you like to see more focus on?
Some good Pve guides on balancing teams with henchies or hero guides.

* Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?
No idea =).

* If you have ever submitted a guide, why did you do that?
Never did x.x

* For you, what do you define as a \"well written and good guide\"?
A well written and good guide is like a well written and good tutorial. It should be easy to understand but
explained in detail as well, preferbally with a images and a video so people can see the build in work.

* What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep?
The Search option =)

* Finally, is there something else you want to further comment on?
Personally, i think it would be better to arrange the different category's better. For example that the main
page has a new guide with infront in it what it is so people can see right away for example if it's a pvp guide
that it's not for them if they don't pvp. And when you go to the think in the left, that you can also easilly
what category you want to browse in, as most go to farming anyhow.

Just my 2 cents =)

GGS is recruiting. Post a application here.

Not sure where that idea cam from Crim; i never said people should use tables, wrapping, html formats and such. The guide guidelines that were made merely stated that explanaitory images had to be implemented and that a guide/build should work in the way intended.
If your refer to the statement that people should look at the layout; layout does not mean 'difficult' even in a straight format (from top to bottom) it is easy to determine if an image looke 'in place' or not. maybe put it above the text; maybe underneath it etc. Layout is done by simple things; not html formatting, tables and div tags.

Remember; a guide is 50 credit; a bit of work should be expected. 'Guides' consisting of 50 lines in unformatted text (read paragrahs, hard enters, colorising, no images) telling a story about how to do something is not a guide in my opinion.

A good guide has a few things in my opinion:
- specific deion of skills, attributes and runes
- armour index; what insignias do you run and why
- weapon deion and why do you use the weapon; is there a reason it is used? or is weaponset free to choose?
- general tactic deion; how to use the build; how to chain the combo; how do the skill synergise; if you describe a teambuild; how do the different professions synergise?
- pros and cons; espceially with profession builds; what are the strenghts? what are the weakenesses? what can you engage, what should you avoid.
- Is what the guide says true (no offense, but the norn rep guide stating that a certain blessing is obtained at a certain shrine is nonsense; blessings are random. Therefore the guide is actually incomplete and not viable. The guide itself is nice and such and it has some good points and tips to how to farm the points; but the information in there is flawed. It should have been corrected by the author, resubmitted and then be approved.)

These points are the ones i always stated; when i was staff (and made the guide guidelines) and points i still think are valuable when deciding whether to approve or not.

I know how hard it is to determine if a guide is viable or not. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt :)

1) Almost everytime a new guide pop-ups.

2) More help if you want to submit a Guide.

3) Does it actually work?! Does it have enough information?!

4) Because I thoughed it was fun to play and wanted to share it with GameAmp.

5) As stated above, with enough information and/or picture's.

6) The large variaty of builds which are their.

7) Guidesection is not doing to bad if you ask me, only needs a little more guideline's when you want to post one: fe. Links for ImageShack, a small explanation of the Codes their are like, the QUOTE-option and so on...

I think guides about a build should have a template they need to follow as PvX does a far better job at keeping builds.

Dru got confused in the staff forums when I talked about the formatting, so I made sure that didnt happen again. :P

What I'm saying is using tables can help with the layout(something not required but sugguested), and I'm sure many people here dont know how to do all that stuff.

RE: A Survey on the Gameamp Guides Section

* How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?
every time a new guide that interests me bumps in and when I need a guide about a certain subject.

* What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?
Honestly, I have no idea.

* What would you like to see more focus on?
More controle on how the guides follow the rules for writing a guide.

* Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?
The fact that guides have to be clear for every kind of player. Often things aren't very well explained for beginning players or for players that don't know much about a certain part of the game. Think of abbreviations and parts that say "you need basic 55hp gear", "use corners to group the enemies", "you need a LoD Healer", "with a B/P group it should work" etc...Not everyone know what is meant and I would like to see things better explained or links to other guides there.

* If you have ever submitted a guide, why did you do that?
I didn't.

* For you, what do you define as a \"well written and good guide\"?
A guide that follows the guide rules. They're perfect.

* What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep?
Everything except the builds. PvXWiki is a lot better for builds (structure; control; better system of changing, suggestions and rating).

* Finally, is there something else you want to further comment on?
Keep up the good work ^^

generally speaking 2-3 days. guides need to be read, searched on the web to make sure they aren't ripping a guide from another site, critiqued, then approved.

remembering, if there are spelling mistakes it will likely not be approved and sent back to you.

RE: A Survey on the Gameamp Guides Section

How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?

Every time a new guide pops up.

What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?

It isn't organized enough, so really you can only get help from it every time a new guide comes up. Also many many many many of the guides seems like they don't check their work, they don't test their builds as much as they could to the point where there are NO flaws in the build and NO way to make it better. Many don't have enough pictures and have these huge paragraphs that no one wants to read.

What would you like to see more focus on?

Less builds, more tactical stuff. How to do this farm, how to use this profession, how to do this aspect of PvP. Take the best one of each and leave it up there.

Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?

The info, the style, pictures, format. Make sure the info is correct, make sure the guide has style, its not just boring text, make sure it has plenty of good looking and informational pictures, make sure that it is sectioned so it is easy to follow.

If you have ever submitted a guide, why did you do that?

I have. I have submitted 3 guides about builds, 1 about scrimaging, and 1 about the assassin profession. The first one I made because it was all I did at the time, the guides about the builds were builds that I was working on, and the assassin profession one was because I see all these builds coming from assassins that are missing so much in them or just plain suck. Hopefully that guide fixed something. Also I just really like AMP, and want it to be as good as possible.

For you, what do you define as a "well written and good guide"?

It has to be specific, unbias, and neat. If you don't explain everything then the comments section gets filled with "Huh?" comments. If you say something SUX or give your OPINION, then the guide is not going to turn out well. Give FACTS, not opinion. If you don't format the guide right, give it sections, pictures videos ect. It looks horrible, and no one will read it. especially if you have 45 sentence paragraphs, No one wants to read that. They have to be split up so it guides the eye down and they read more of it.

What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep?

Every so often there is a farming guide or things like that that fully explain a farm and everything about it. It is helpful so I don't make an ass of myself when I try it for the first time and mess things up. If only those were put into a section so they could all be found. Something like:

New guides:
Farming Guides:
Running Guides:
Profession Guides:
PvP Guides:

Finally, is there something else you want to further comment on?

The Guides section is completely disorganized, and is only good for new guides that come in. Once a guide makes it to the second page or just too far down, no one read them anymore. Infact most guides are read for only 1-2 weeks after they are posted and the comments stop, thats it. If they were put into sections like I said before, the guides section would be used more.

/agree. That and a different section.

RE: A Survey on the Gameamp Guides Section

  • How often do you read the guide section? Never? Every time a new guide bumps in?
Every time a new guide bumps in that sounds interesting.

  • What do you feel is the most pressuring issue with the guide section?
Lack of new guides is hardly your problem. Quality of guides is a big issue. Not so much since Maya wrote his \"guide to guides\" as it were, but people following it would be good.

  • What would you like to see more focus on?
People thinking about what section to put their guide in, instead of leaving it in the default section. As I mentioned above, I would like to see more quality guides, rather than quantity. I don't think staffers testing the builds is viable, but something to check the builds work would be nice.

  • Under what sort criteria(s) do you think we should approve guides on, apart from the ones we already have?
Spelling is my big problem. If you spell something wrong, I automatically look for others spelling mistakes and make a judgement of you :P seriously though, spelling things wrong happens. In the occasional post, that's fine. But a guide should be something that you write, you check, you rewrite/improve etc. And all those multiple check overs should mean your spelling is word perfect. Remember, spell check and dictionary.reference.com are your friends. (This is one of my main problems with guides made as a picture. Spelling mistakes are not easy to correct.)
Plus, it would be nice to see more people following Maya's guidelines. Maybe you could remind people to read them before they submit a guide? Would that work on the submit page?

  • If you have ever submitted a guide, why did you do that?
    Never have done.

  • For you, what do you define as a \"well written and good guide\"?
A well written guide should have clear labelled sections and explain everything. There should also be something to break up the paragraphs: a page of long text makes me yawn. Pretty pictures are good, useful pictures are even better! Talking about your good and bad experiences is essential. If you only outline the good points, you will get criticised to death in the comments. A guide should also be a reasonable length. If you can describe everything in a paragraph, congratulations! You probably just created a new language!

  • What is it about the guide section you like? What should we keep?
I like it fine as it is. All old guides should be kept IMO, as someone mentioned, it would mess up the credit system. However, maybe those out of date guides could be moved to the \"Obselete\" section. Especially build ones, since I imagine someone probably trawls through them commenting that they no longer work.

  • Finally, is there something else you want to further comment on?
I don't think there's much wrong with the search function, the problem is people who don't label their guides sensibly. I know of at least one guide that was renamed after someone pointed out no one would find it by searching.
