How can I reduce my ping? Whenever I play Battlefield my ping gets high and I usually get kicked from server even though I am not lagging (depends on server).

things to check for :
phone system if you have adsl do you have any other devises in the system, extension leads, fax machines, if any of the wiring near any other electrical or electronic stuff. sometimes ping is caused by electrical noise.
the ideal setup as a test is try from the main bt socket with no other devises plugged in and see if your ping is better.
one thing you can try before doing this is a trace rout that checks the ping at each step along the way.
When guildwars is open hover the mouse over the lag indicator and write down the ip address, (its a set of 4 numbers seperated by full stops).
next click start and then click run
type into the run command box "cmd" and click ok
a nice black box should appear try typing into this black box:
/tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where x is the numbers of the ip you coppied down it will check where your lag is comming from. It might be in your house or it might be at one of your internet service providers servers. if its your isp then change to a new one. btw are you in the uk or in america?
edit : forget that last bit your in america ok well the trace rt thing should show you where the lag is. if its in the first line then its probably between you and your router/modem thats when you fiddle with the phone system if you have cable ignore my whole post.
edit i got some stuff from my little thingy on my aliance forum that might help a little but its late i have to be up early tomorrow
SLOW SPEEDS, INTERMITTENT CONNECTION OR WORSE
If you have a router and the wifi is not working but a linked connection is. Then its simple your router works fine you need to fiddle with your LAN connection. Most of that is on your computer. To find this out click start go to control panel, open network and internet connections and go to network connections (windows XP) or just network connections 2000… or my computer and dial up connections (95, 98, ME ect)… infact if your using 95, 98 or ME please stop reading this and cry in the corner its hard enough without complicating things. Found a list of connections? Good right click wifi search for a available wireless connections.
If you don’t see the network in the list then your antenna is blocked by something, usually a wall or a human walking in front of the antenna watching TV. or cooking a microwave dinner. Or feeding the fish. “Look for water, electrical equipment or metal”. Make sure the antenna is pointing roughly in the direction of the router. If it is sometimes there and sometimes not there you can use a program called “network stumbler” to see your signal strength and angle your antenna for best results try putting your computer or antenna in different parts of the room for best results. If you have a spare 30-40 quid you can usually buy an antenna with a better design than the one that came with your card or router. Directional ones are good but the thing you look for is a high db or high gain antenna. The main thing to do however is to think about the distance between the two antennas…. What’s the plural for antenna I think its antenni? Anyways if you have a good signal to your router but you have a bad ping it could still be things in between the antenna and your machine. Try a speed test (www.speedtest.net). Try from your wireless computer and then try one from a computer that’s got a wired or Ethernet link this one shows the average ping. If the speed tests from your wireless pc is bad and the wired is good read this paragraph again and again and so on.
If they are both bad read on.

ok well still try the /tracert thing
if you have a wifi cable router you might be able to improve the ping by changing the antenna or moving them around a little. but it helps to know where the lag is comming from.

Interesting...
It's possible you have to many hidden programs in the background.
Try this.
Start > Run
Type: "msconfig" and then search.
Select "Services" tab.
Near the bottom MAKE SURE the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box is checked.
Then click "Disable All"
Now Select "Startup" tab.
Then click "Disable All" on that.
Then click "ok".
You have to then restart your pc and viola...should help lower ping ;D

Just inable it when you log in. Just don't open your internet till you do ;P
Not that hard. Also, now that you mention it. You keep Norton up while on the internet I take it?
Norton could be slowing your speeds down as well. But I'm really no pc geek. I honestly don't know how that would take effect. I'm just saying it's a possibility.

And I havent checked to see if this was mentioned, but if you have a virus protection (which you probably do) make sure it isnt runnin a scan in the background... norton does it all the time... I hate norton.
[edit] yep, someone said it. Yikes! dont do it if it disables firewall! O.o
