Ho ho ho. Mesmer Could triumph against anything. Don't underestimate the power ^_^
To all you newbs! If you can't decide what profession to make first...besure to choose either Mesmer or Necromancer. They may not seem great in the beginning. But once you've understood the concepts, you can break through anything. Unlike other professions *rolls eyes*.

Don't get me wrong, Mesmers and Necros are awesome, but they aren't better than everything else.

Any profession can defeat any other profession...you just need to have the right build.
There is no 'best' profession.

I could have just said "You're wrong." which would have been equally as correct as what I said. I don't feel like typing an essay to prove every idiotic comment I see wrong.

There is no "best", either alone or with a secondary. They are all equal. It's all in what you favor playing and how good you become at it.
However, Ranger (IMO) is the most versatile.

Fine, I'll explain. If there was such a thing as a best profession you'd see the top ladder team running 8 copies of the same profession. Most likely with alot of the same skill slots (another argument that I've already done). Now here's where someone will ironically point out the fact that 12 warriors have cleared the deep, or that there's a monthly "mesmer" meeting where they do nothing but clear areas with 8 mesmers all running different bars. The problem with that is that it's not efficient. Another problem with that is that this was typically pointed at the PvP direction due to "Mesmers and Necros own all other classes". That's not true even in PvE. Though I will admit that Necros are amazing in PvE due to the ridiculously overpowered-ness of soul reaping, I still wouldn't take a full team of them over a more balanced teambuild that can do and take more abuse.
@Garret. There is something wrong with you. You say I fail and then point out something that strengthens the point I stated.
@Pickletron. Yes I'm an elitist jerk (this post proves it). I don't need you to tell me that. I'm also horribly sarcastic, would you like to comment on that too?
In the end, it's player skill that defines how effective any character in that slot will be. I'm not putting down the value of necros or mesmers here, there's always one of each in my PvE teambuilds. However that doesn't make them better than other professions. They can shut down a warrior who would otherwise be doing 5000DPM, but does that mean they'll score kills on enemy monks by themselves? Perhaps. It is possible for mesmers to kill monks. But a team of 8 would have to keep themselves alive against a full on pressure of keeping multiple classtypes shut down simultaneously and still pumping out damage. It might work that way on paper, but in reality there's no way it'd work.

Rogue = Win. If I posted half of the things I typed up in responses (that end up not getting posted because I don't want to act like Rogue junior :P), people may see me as sarcastic/elitist as him... I must say I agree with most of what you say Rogue.
Anyways, to add something useful... every class is dependent on another class to be used to its full effectiveness. For example, sure a warrior can bring healing hands, doylak signet, etc. but at this point it just becomes useless. So... give him a real build. Oh now he dies. Oh wait, what's that? A monk is healing and/or protting him... Yay? Best? NO!

Amen Rogue, well put!
back on-topic:
There is seriously not a best profession, every profession has its strong sides.
The Assassin as example can do very large ammounts of damage in a really short time.
The Monk and Ritualist are the best healers ingame.
fill the rest in for yourself.
How good a profession is depends totally on the environment at that moment, and on the skill of the player ofcourse.

Correct! that is 100% true, certain proffesions may be better in certain areas, but overall, all proffesions level out.
PS. think this topic should be closed as there are hundreds like it and look at how some of them turned out.

jarmina, that doesn't proof anything, it just says you have way to much time on your hands and you really pwn at mesmering. but you know dani le? she's in ToD and is a monk, she has "many leather bound books". so, your titles say nothing about how good a class is, it says something how good you are!
and as stated a million times before, there isn't one best class. i think necros own because i play almost only necro :P but i would never want a team of 8 necros >.< i prefer 1 war, 2 monk, ele, necro, rest free. soo.... my 2 cents
thanks to mimori for this nice signature!

i like rangers best. they call me ghostly.
only proffesions that don't bore me after like ~3 years of gw are warriors and rangers. i can't even touch an ele/derv/para/rit without immediatly thinking of raging due to fact how fast i'm going to get bored >.>

Yes, it has been stated many times, but I don't see how that is a reason to tell people to 'shut up'. Does it really matter if people have repeated it a few times? You don't have to read it, so don't let it annoy you.
BTW, I don't mean to sound offensive, so sorry if I did. :P
