what current or developing MMO would you cancel?

If you had the ability, what current or developing MMO would you cancel, and why? We all know there is some major crap out there, which one is king of the *ship* pile?

Uhmz, Guild Wars 2 or Warhammer Online, 'cos they both seem kinda interesting but I don't have time to play with and I don't wanna quit WoW to get more game time. :P

Well, there are a lot of crappy MMO's out there. Some of them already released, and some in developemnt, but I wouldn't actually cancel any of them. It doesn't really matter what I think is crap. As long as there are people enjoying them who am I to spoil their fun.

Maybe if I would be the invester behind them, but then I would first want to see some figures.

What might be an (ever so slightly) more useful idea is to come up with MMO idea we would like to see being developed. Maybe there is even such a game being developed, but the we didn't know about yet.

Personally I am eagerly looking for a great Sci-Fi game. SWG could have been ok if I didn't dislike Star Wars so much. I thought the world of Anarchy Online was perfect. But now after 7 years it has gotten too outdated. I might be stealing a bit lani's idea but I would like to see 'Serenity Online' or 'Andromeda Online'. As long as I have a space ship to fly to various planets and then become a real person. Eve Online has the problem it is too unpersonal. I need a character customization screen, and actually see my character most of the time.

Tabula Rasa could have been great, but in my mind they completely blew it. If I want a fps I'll play Unreal or Half Life or something. The real reason MMO are great is social interaction, and that game is utterly missing that. So, I want a MMO without FPS, but with great adventures, instanced planets, a crew/team of my ship, and after that I haven't thought it out yet :)

I wouldn't cancel any of them, I'm with Phedre on that. But I would love to see Phantasy Star as a MMO.

RE: what current or developing MMO would you cancel?

Phe stole my line! :-)

Seriously, any MMOG, no matter how much crap it may be, is a huge combined effort by a team of at least 50+ who generally gave whole chunks of their life, for low wages I might ad, to get that game out. Imo, every game deserves a chance to launch at least, and no-one deserves the negative vitriolic fallout the average gamer will spew on something.

Having said that, I do agree with Phe's assesment of Tabula Rasa. They tried, but somehow missed the essentials.

Serenity Online would be awesome. Just wish they could get a format where a group of players could be a combined crew in someway. Would be difficult though.

I do see your point of view but id rather the talent goes to a good MMO than continue working on crappy ones. Or remake them to be better, such as SOE taking on Vanguard and making it a TON better, probably the most improved MMO ever.

RE: what current or developing MMO would you cancel?

I feel I have to disagree on SOE improving Vanguard a ton, or it being the most improved MMOG ever. It's not been around long enough. Co(X), EQ, EQ 2 and several others have seen more improvements made over the years than Vanguard.
Vanguard so since launch has only been tweaked and features culled. The Raid they're now finally putting in was supposed to be in at launch. That's correcting an omission, not improving.

I see your point in talent going to where it will shine the most. How to achieve that though? A briliant developper from dropped project A will not necessarily get on board of B you know.

But indeed, what MMOGs would you can?

Edit: Thought some more on this.
What MMOG's I would like to see cancelled are those that are Marketing Projects jumping on the "Use a Pre-Exisiting IP known to sell as it will sell" theme. A game needs to be a good game first, or in addition to having a good IP. Huh? What? Ok, WOW does well because Warcraft is known AND it's a good game (with horrible Disney-like toons). The IP is Warcraft.
There's currently a crop of IP-snatching (from Star Trek to Harry Snotter) going on where it seems the aim is to get a MMOG out because it will sell anyway. Kinda like the sleuth of crappy single-player games that follow a Hollywood release. When was one of those ever any good?

WAR is an exception to this I think/hope as it's being done by veterans of the bussiness and is making a good game to go with a good IP. You need both. It's harder to create your own good IP, but it will have more panache than crappy borrowed IP.

RE: what current or developing MMO would you cancel?

WAR is a PvP remake of WoW. Blizzard originally had the rights to make WAR but lost them and changed the name to WoW, in turn WAR is ending up more and more like WoW with some more PvP. While its not at release stage yet in beta i doubt they will change it all that much. Though it does look promising and like it will be a fun game.

I already got my cancel wish for the year, Gods and Heros, it was a crap game and i hope the talent is going to focus on Star Trek Online now. I also hope they get some balls over at perpetual and do what they want and not try to make a wow clone like they did with Gods and Heroes which in the end killed them.

If i had to cancel another game it would probably be Age of Armor, or Archlord. Both are good concepts with highly flawed implimentation. Archlord is a micropayment model, which would be fine if you did not have to buy things to enjoy the game. You can't really participate unless you spend real money on ingame items, theres no way to really grind or raid to get the best gear. Also it is VERY confusing at first with no ingame tutoral which is a big fat failure, I think all games should have some sort of tutoral for the first level or so. Pirates of the Burning seas does a great actual tutoral level in their new game. WoW does a good job of this leading players by the nose the first few levels. Other successful MMOs do it as well.

As for Age of Armor its just not a very good game for many reasons IMO. Mostly because the people doing the English version are not native English speakers. The story is confusing because of this and therefore hard to play. If they wanted to launch in North America they should invest in English translators.

Just my opinion.
Dru

RE: what current or developing MMO would you cancel?

Heh, I see WAR as a WOWish remake of DaOC. I guess it's a matter of which games you're more familiar with. I also would not call Gods and Heroes (isn't it canceled/put on hold indefinitely already?) a WOW clone.
I mean, lets be honest. WOW is an aggregation of all prior Fantasy MMOG's that went before. It's the result of a very careful study of what was done right and wrong in its predecessors, picking the good bits and adding just one hitherto unseen feature, Polish Polish Polish. Other than that, every feature in WOW can be traced back to earlier games. As such only a game that has a same level of polish at launch could in my view, be considered a WOW clone. It needs to copy something inherently WOW-ish.

Oddly enough, the importance of Polish is the one thing every Studio who brought out an MMOG since seems to overlook or at best underappreciate in WOW's success.

*footnote: Before people start flaming me about knocking on WOW for not being original, very few games are. In fact I can't name a single MMOG that I'd call original, ok? I'm not bashing WOW on anything but it's Disney characters.

I'm actually really looking forward to Warhammer Online. Why, you ask? Because it means that all the pvp monkeys in WoW will go somewhere else so I can finally enjoy my pve based game in peace without them. There, I said it.

Fury tanked. It blows. I'm really really sad. I'd cancel that one. Though TBH, the latest runescape update is ridiculously amazing. They basically killed most of the things that you could even consider to be "fun".

So yeah it is already canceled, lol. But what hurt them was trying to impliment things to be LIKE wow. They had a good concept but then they decided it was going to be WoW with a Roman Themed Skin...it was sad because it was not implimented well. If they had implimented it WELL then it would be a different story, maybe. Yeah I know wow has the best of most previous MMOs combined together, but now it is what other MMOs are copying, ie why i said it was trying to be a clone. Just before they called it off they were implimenting new things all the time that were conceptually taken directly from wow. It lead to the downfall of the game.

Either way I hope the talented people that worked on that project will now work on Star Trek but make it different and not try to copy other things that are out there, I would love to see a game with different mechanics to it for once. (kinda like Pirates of the Burning seas is different mechanically)
