Hi Guys,
I only bought this game like 1 week ago, and been playing it on and off. I have a couple of characters...one is lvl 12 in Eastern Frontier, the other is lvl 8 in Post Searing Ascalon.
Here's the thing though...I wanted to get started with PvP...you know, mess around a bit and stuff. But whenever I try to create a character in PvP mode, its a straight lvl 20 build, with a few crappy skills. The area I am in doesnt let me change my skills, nor does it let me pick a secondary etc. After the first 3 AI PvP battles which I cleared, it dumped me into this giant lobby with a LOT of other players. And I STILL wasnt able to make my character properly!!
What gives?? Am I missing something REALLY obvious?

look for a preist of balthazar. when you fight in pvp you earn points (balthazar points you can spend thease on skills). press h to find out how many points you have and press k yo change your skills. you can change your skills in the lobby.

best thing to do is right now to concentrate on PVE.
you will unlock a lot of skills during the prophecies campaign, and when u got the skills u can do pvp with at least8 skills ;-).
But if you really wanna move on in PvP you have to unlock skills and items. You can unlock those items at a priest of balthazar which can be found in all pvp areas. And when u got those things unlocked you just have to press 'j' for changing your items and 'K' for changing your skills to how you wish them to be ;-)

Wow! Thanks guys, that helped! So basically I have to farm faction points to unlock skills? And I still won't be able to use them PvE...hmm..I think I will stick to PvE for now in that case.
However...does this mean I have to play with every single profession (E/Mo, N/Me, R/W) to unlock all skills?? o.O That's going to take a long time...

My advice is to unlock the skills to one of the common meta builds and get a feel for how it plays before you move onto making your own builds. If you wanna pvp later, the sooner you start the better.

Just to give you an idea. I am mainly a PvE player and have 7 characters at level 20. I PvP every once and a while. I have just under 2 years in the game and just a month ago completed all my unlocks.
Some advice.
If you are going to PvP start by determining 1 class to start with and unlock 8 skill that you think make a good skill bar and go to random arena's to start farming faction. Some tips
1. Unless you are a monk always bring a rez signet!!!
2. Playing casters - always bring a self heal and either a speed buff or anti-melle type skill (something that will either block attacks or prevent them from attacking
3. For melee - bring a snare. It is hard to unload on a target if he is running away from you
4. For rangers - bring apply poison. Spreading conditions is one of the best ways to maintain constant pressure on enemy monks or decimate a team that doesnt have any.
Good luck and don't get too frustrated Random arena's are full of people that trash talk, call everyone noobs, and are just plain mean. Once you get more familair with PvP and have more skills unlocked you can start playing in the Team arenas.
One last note- PvE is a great way to not only unlock skills but to learn how to play builds you create at your own pace.
Good luck and enjoy.

no you dont have to play with every single profession, say you decide to start out as a w/mo, once you reach the crystal desert in prophecies you are able to change your secondary profession at will and can unlock skills for each profession that way

option 1: you play 1 character and make him as good as you can, this means unlock skills get good armor and weapons, then u can go into the arena with this character and gain faction. with this faction u buy stuff for your pvp characters
option2: u can buy skill unlock packs for real money but this won't give you all the fun. :-)
hope this helped a little bit

The best thing to do would be to create a PvP-character, not bringing a PvE character to Random Arenas, since it costs alot of money to get a PvE character equipment equal to that of a PvP character.
To the TS: I think the best thing to do would be to just finish the game, get some skills and items unlocked, and if you have done that, go to Random Arenas, try some combinations of skills, while sticking to the points mentioned earlier. That way you earn faction, which will allow you to make more different builds, move on to Team Arenas and try getting into teams there, always make sure to have around 8k faction in case your team wants you to play a specific build, after that, move on to Heroes' Ascent, get your shiny deer, find a GvG based guild and HF there. Good luck!

Some great advice here. I think this has really helped me out a lot. And also, I think the best thing for me right now would be to play PvE. On my first char (Ele/Mes) I am up till Ruins of Surmisumthing and I really struggled, even after reading some guides and stuff. With my second character (Necro/Monk) I'm actually doing a lot better!! Energy management, movement to avoid damage, strategic attacks, spiking casters instead of generally tossing out spells as they become available etc...basically getting a better feel for the game as I go.
As an example, the first time I was doing Althaea's Ashes (Flame Temple Corridor) I simply couldn't do it until one of my lvl 20 guild mates very graciously helped me out. The second time though, with an arguably weaker character as far as AoE damage is concerned, I was able to beat the whole quest solo at a lower level with only the henchmen. Wow...really loving the PvE aspect of the game so far.
As for PvP...I think I will wait till I unlock all the other good skills before I play PvP. Farming faction is not really my thing somehow...:)

:D thats the way to do it *warm fuzzy feeling* dont forget to do the quests because you get skills from them. L should bring up your quest log and the guys in towns that have a green ! above their heads have them... let me find that list...

Just a note on the questing.
When you get to the point where you can change your secondary proffesion you can go back and do quests for skills in that secondary. so if you change your secondasry from E/me to E/N you could do the skills quests from the necro guys to unlock more skills. Man I wish they had kept that through the other 3 campaigns. Anyway good luck

Wierd double post. Didn't hit the button twice. Oh well. Might as well make it useful now
In regards to the post below me. Don't be to hasty to get run through everything. Prophcies is a long campaign and can be a lot of fun if played through. A lot of new people make the mistake of getting run right through most of it an miss a lot of good stuff. Since this is your first time through I would recommend doing the quests and mission on the way to get both skills and experience. Save the running for your next character.

Awwww, little nooblet. Welcome to GameAmp!
I would suggest you keep playing PvE for awhile. Unlock a good amount of skills in PvE (by completing quests and using gold to purchase skills at skill traders).
Once you've unlocked a fair amount of skills, you can organize a decent skill bar for a PvP character. Then let the PvP begin. Like most new comers, you'll probably want to be hanging out in Random Arena. Earn balthazar points...once you reached near like 5-10k (IMO)....then use those points to unlock better things to make your PvP character strong. From weapon mods to new skills.

@exofluke: Oi mate, you're a Me/N right? How would you say the PvE game is for that kind of character?? I wanted to make one...but I got scared away by the other guys in my guild...who recommended I go N/Mo or Ele/N if I wanted to be a necro instead...

there arent many PvE mesmers in the game, mostly because imho mes was a class designed more on the pvp side of the spectrum. if you like being a necro, i would go n/mo. my 1st char was n/mo, and i have nearly 900 of my 1300 odd hours on him. once i got tto the point where i could change classes, i changed him to a n/me, and now he runs both n/mo and n/me builds. loads of fun
