How best to get those last nine levels without taking forever over it?

Team, and team lots. In the later levels its easier to get picked up on a team 4 to 5 levels higher than you. AVs and farm missions are plentiful in the 40s.
Dont forget to enjoy the ride though.

I solo'd most of it with my Fire Tank in the Rikti War Zone running Borea missions. Honestly, I was mostly doing it for the Merits for "Vanguard stuff" but levels came with it. :)
Honestly, 41-50 took FAR less time than 31-40 did.

my 50 is a dark defender, so i got invited to AV teams like nobody's business (-acc/-dam, team rez), so i barely had time to train when i got a new level. i ended up going from 41-50 in about a week. basically, team a lot, everyone just wants to finish that last leg, so they'll probably be happy to have you.

I found it harder to get through the 30th.

Nope...I tend to slow down when the big 5 gets near.

I have no idea, my Inv/Em tank has been at lvl 42 for over a year.
