Mostly because Mzzkc says so :)
But personally I would not start with a corrupter. As a new player it is a lot easier to start with a mastermind or brute. They have a lot better survivability and you'll get a good feel of life on isles. But is you would like to stick to your corrupter, I would with ice as secondary. The secondaries my notorious collegues suggested are more team based. With ice secondary you will be able to survive nicely on your own. But in general, a corrupter (and dominator) is a more support class, so you will need a team to shine.

Stalkers or brutes are the best choice, masterminds lack the feeling of fighting alone and give you much less idea of solo combat on the field.
Cor's rock, and /dark is never a let down. Teams love it, its not too bad for end and it has probably the most useful powers in the game.
A personal note, why go for an assult rifle, get super powers ya know, something you cant have in real life. Fire ftw!

what ever you do don't start with rad/ primary. it will turn you off to corrs completly. most of the powers don't deal alot of damadge and it's really hard to solo when it takes you 10 mins real time to kill a boss.
i really liked energy for a primary. animations are a little long but the damage is good and it has all the knockback you could ever want, which coincidently comes in very handy when soloing. cause corrs are soft. sonic is a good primary too.
but as far as AR/ . depends on what your plans for the toon ARe. pvp, pve, teaming, solo play?? i find when soloing a corr it's good to have a heal and/or holds. you want to lvl/team fast? go with rad, kinetics, or thermal. pvp, go with kinetics, rad, or traps. dark is fun and well rounded (debuffs, holds, heals/rez, and you get a pet at lvl 38).

When I started playing my first toon was a Corrupter, while I still play him from time to time I am more of a loner player and don’t like hunting for teams all the time. If you like hunting for teams and playing in teams all the time then a Corrupter is a great character. If you prefer to run by yourself more often (understanding that team runs are great and will often raise your level faster) then MM is IMHO the way to go. I know I will get a lot of flack for this, but I would stay away from the Bots. While they are powerful, the later bots get quite large and can get in the way from time to time. I would recommend (having played all the sets) Either Thugs, or Mercenaries. Thugs are often over looked, but have great powers and at higher levels have great leadership bonuses. Also your last Thug is a minor Brute in his own right. Mercenaries get their own medic later and greatly extend their own lives.
As for Secondary powers Traps, or Dark miasma is great. With Dark you will get a group heal and a group Rez (for team only not your pets), a group hide, and even an extra pet later on.
My primary MM is a Zombie / Poison ( will not say it is an easy set, but I love it) and often run with 2 SG members who run Thugs and Merc’s. We run most mishs on Relentless and very rarely do we ever lose a team member (and I lose the most pets, but you have to remember that my zombies are very hand to hand and end up being -5 levels to the main guys)
Hope this helps, but in the end choose what is best for you. If nothing else try it and if you don’t like it, reroll.

I have a level 22 AR/Traps Corruptor that was my first character and is still my A # 1 Main. Granted I do have previous experience playing ranged 'squishies' on other games. I almost always solo and I have had no problem keeping my Corruptor alive. When you can get them go for Triage Beacon and Force Field Generator (if you take Traps as your secondary like I did) they work wonders at keeping you alive against bosses or larger groups of mobs (fighting large groups all at once is not a good idea with a corruptor but sometimes you can aggro an entire group by accident and these two abilities help immensley). Also, you have several good choices for knockback like Buckshot, Sniper Rifle, Slug and M30 Grenade Launcher. All told, I would say that Corruptors are very survivable and a viable class for soloing if you play them smart. You definitely don't want to rush in guns blazing but rather use some stealth and cunning, snipe from a distance, use secondary abilities to keep enemies at range and to heal and protect yourself and you will not have too much trouble.

Radiation Emmision
-Good for Solo and Teaming
-AM is nice for the buffs it gives
-its 2 debuffing toggles make enemies a breeze
-EM Pulse is good emergency crowd control
-Kinetics
-Good team buffs as well as self buffs that debuff at same time
eg: siphon power/speed, Transfusion (-regen)
-Can Really Pump up your own dmg with Siphon Power and Fulcrum Shift
-Built in Travel power at lvl 26 or 28 (I forget)
Cold/Fire
-more team oriented sets
-Fire: heals, Resistance Shields, Rez, Buffs
-Cold: Defense Sheilds, stormie type powers, debuffs, team stealth
Sonic:
-Team type set
-Resistance sheilds, nice -resistance debuffs, Hold tier 9
Dark:
-another good solo/team set
-lots of - acc debuffs, team stealth, tier 9 pet, -resitance and speed tar patch, Multi-people Rez!!
Hope this helps to clarify the sets for you. :)

i would suggest fire or ice / rad or dark, i wouldnt go with energy as from what i've seen it can and sometimes does bug missions, the KB annoys most brutes and stalkers although it is admittably good for soloing, ice and fire are good for soloing and fire kills faster but has no hold or mez in it while ice kills fast, not fire fast, and has 2 built in holds, dark is simplistic becuase for soloing all it really NEEDS is the heal although its foolish to skip anything in the set except for Black hole and possibly if you dont plan on teaming, the rez, rad is a little more complicated becuase it has Toggle Debuffs which can cause a problem in the early levels with endurance although you do have AM which does grant some end recovery
