Getting a new pc, got any advice

For xmas ive only asked for money, purely so i can buy a decent pc for gaming and the use of my Adobe CS3 master collection (*evil laugh* the power of that stuff is awesome)

I have been looking at those old alienware pc's, supposed to be pretty rockin for gaming pc's, my friend has one and i can say its pretty cool

However there was that thing going around that CoX and Alienware weren't so great together?

I duno, can anyone confirm me this, and if anyone knows a good gaming pc make can you link me it (i intend to build my own but i want it from a good hardcore company, something a little different from textbook dell)

Oh yeah i looking at a price range of anything up to and around £1000

Cheers

- Hell

NVidia 8800 GT (Don't worry about the GTX or any of the other crazys) Video Card. Pretty much any of the 8x00 GT line are decent, but the 8800 is really nice.

2+ Gig of RAM

Those are my two biggies. Any PC that comes standard with those things should come standard with anything else that will make it pop for games. :)

Check out this company AeonCraft.
They seem to have reasonable rigs at reasonable prices. My next machine is going to be coming from them.

RE: Getting a new pc, got any advice

Make one from scratch Hell. Grab yourself one of those fancy quad cores (I've heard there are some out there going for $200 something. I don't know if they ship to the UK though. Make sure the MB is compatible though as a lot of models don't support quad cores yet.).

Then back up the processor with some sweet cooling (A BIG fan or two should work fine seeing as you probably couldn't afford to make a phase change system).

One video card should be fine, but if your MB supports it and you have a little extra see if you can get two running at once.

RAM is good. You'll want 2 gigs minimum.

The power source doesn't have to be extravagant, but if you have a bit extra some LEDs would make the clear sided case you're obligated to buy that[i/] much nicer.

Get a decent sound card. Nothing too fancy though.

And don't forget to shove as many fans as you can fit into the thing (They should have LEDS too).

The other goodies aren't as important so you can save a bit there. Heck, you could probably salvage some stuff from your current system. Or you could try to at least.

>.>

Just be careful of static when you start assembly and everything should turn out just fine.

[i]Or
you could be not cool and buy a system from some big name manufacturer. It's okay though Hell. I completely understand. I actually didn't know how to put a computer together from scratch until recently when I helped a friend out with his.

Before that I had only taken one apart a few times to examine how everything worked. Taking everything apart includes dismantling the HD to see what was inside. I still have actually. I'll put up a picture later.

I love my new camera that I got for Christmas.

Edit: I purposely didn't give you specifics because Ron pretty much summed it up. As for a good gaming laptop I have no idea because I haven't even started looking for one yet. I'm gonna need it for college next year.

=)

Awesomesauce. As long as you get it customized that's cool with me.

Now that I've approved I guess you're going to have buy a stock PC. ^.^

Always remember to touch some metal first man. The static can be pretty nasty if you don't. =)

And I know this is the other thread, but I suggest going with AMD. Most all of their stuff is great for gaming.

Off topic: Cres, I think Iani is right, that iPod is either causing brain cancer or you have those ear plugs jammed in too deep.

On topic: Get a duo core. Why? Basically how it works is on the dual core there's 2 cores running at say 2.92ghz each, on a quad core there's 4 cores running at 2.66ghz each.

Most games and applications at the moment are single threaded, meaning at the most they will only use 1 of the cores. So say if you're playing a game, it'll at most be running at 2.92ghz on a dual core and 2.66ghz on the quad, as such the dual core performs faster.

So a rather than buy a quad core, buy a duo and spend what you save on a better graphics card.

Thats a plan stan, but i was gonig to go for duel core anyways, my budget is slightly too low for a quad core. I'm 17, i only have a couple of grand stashed away for uni and im already looking to pay £800 on my currant laptop that i built.

Now the quad core thing doesnt really matter to me if i get a laptop anyway, but thats still a decent idea :)

Laptop: Acer Aspire 5920G.

Works fabulously for CoH. I do a fair amount of webdesign on it. Photoshop runs very nicely on it. The screen is really pretty. (CrystalBrite, it's shiny)

I believe it's very available in the UK. I bought it at BestBuy here in the states. Take a look at the specs on it and get something similar or the same. :)
