what card you get depends very much on several different factors
Firstly your budget you have to work out how much you want to spend
secondly you need to know if you want a directX 10 card or a directX 9 card
if you are running vista you want a directX 10 card however if running windows XP you should get a directX 9 card
you need to find out what kind of connection you have either PCI express or AGP.
my advice is to search the web for different types of graphics cards you should find information here about what individual graphics cards are capable of running.
if you have any other questions feel free to PM me
The only dependable thing about the future is uncertainty.

Have a little extra money? I'd get an 8800GT if your system is compatible. It's a very good value for what it costs (but it is kind of expensive, It's generally around the $250-$300 range). It's a wonderful gaming card.
However, if you don't have that much to spend, or don't plan on attempting to run Crysis or CoD4 any time soon, I'd suggest something a little more affordable. You can get an 8600GT for a relatively low price, and the ATI equivalent wouldn't be bad either.
Be careful though, You'll need to know how the rest of your computer will handle these cards. Once you find a card you think you like, check everything you can. Will your power source be able to handle it? Will your processor?
Buying a graphics card isn't just a go to the store and pick up a box kind of thing. You have to consider everything before buying one, or you might just be out of luck.

I had a 5700FX too! I just bought a new PC this month though. I got an 8800GTS and it's sweet as heaven.
If I had to recommend one to you I would say the 8800GT. It's 150,- and has some sweet performance!
Good luck with it.

if you ask me, the ATI Raideon HD3850 sounds like a very good value. i don't have one yet but i did a lot of research on it and it seems pretty damn good for mid-range gaming. a DX10 card with great performance priced at ~$180.00 is very attrative.
i'm going to upgrade to two of these cards setup in cross fire mode soon. that's almost the performance of an 8800GTX for $200 less (so i've read).
what interface do you use? PCI-ex, PCI or AGP?
the HD3850 use PCI-ex/PCI-2.0.

Also before you buy a new graphics card make sure your motherboard can handle it.

Yeah, you're going to need to find out if your motherboard supports PCI-E.
The card you have now is in an AGP slot so if your motherboard is as old as the car then you'll need a new one of them too.
Once you're sure your motherboard can take pci-e cards then get the nVidia 8800GT (Awesome price vs. performance) or if you have a little more cash get the *new* 8800GTS 512mb G92 with 112 stream processors, not the old GTS with 640mb.
