Has this been happening to anyone else?
I just got back from vacation today and I came up to my comp and hit my -image shortcut and got a large update, so I played my new guitar hero christmas present. I came back asuming it updated and I click on my normal shortcut. and this is what it tells me
What should I do, GW worked fine b4 I left for florida
What a Christmas gift huh...

Check your firewall, that may be the problem.

I have also seen this error when the Guild Wars folder in Program Files became read only. No idea what/who set it to read only.

you should try firstly to reinstall Guild Wars
if you do and you still get the problem it seems like it could be your firewall blocking Guild Wars from connecting. so try and unblock the ports that GW uses on your firewall (there are plenty of sites on the internet that will explain how to configure your firewall)
i think that reinstalling will be your best bet.

hmm not gonna be the internet connection if you can get on to post this... are you using the same computer to post this that you use for gw?
hmm firewalls are often a cause for one program getting on the net while another cannot. alternativly two programs might be trying to use your conneciton and one of those might be taking up all the bandwidth. perhaps firstly check things like norton as a test you can try lowering the firewall while nothing else is running. if it is the firewall you can simply configure it to allow gw :/ someplace in the settings.
ok you dont think its the firewall and you dont think its the internet conneciton then one other thing occoured to me perhaps you just got a new game guitar hero and its left on downstairs taking up the majority of your bandwidth.
try running a speed test umm www.speedtest.com and check if you have a low speed.

ok i have a test you can do to see if its the port being blocked
http://www.canyouseeme.org/
Guild Wars is port 6112
so type 6112 into the port tester and see if its being blocked by a firewall or some other device and we can eliminate it from our possible problems.
the speed test results will show us if the problem is one of speed one program might time out while your browser will merrily carry on downloading pages slowly.
edit : omg how stupid am I? You just got a big update what was the update for?? if thats the last thing to change then its possible that that program is now using or blocking the program. one soloution is to try
start > all programs > accessories > system tools > system restore and set your pc back to yday and you will be able to play gw untill something needs and update this time find out what the update is and contact the people who make the update.
or post what has updated im guessing its norton or mcafee or something like that.

Im running a syste restore now!

but here is the bad news
Yikes time to go play my new Guitar Hero 3, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, and DBZ 3 on the wii and Ill have em all beat by the time this is done lol

xD keep an eye on programs that update sometimes the update itself can go wrong and cause problems.
Sometimes settings will change on a program and it will simply need to be reconfigured.
By the looks of things you might want to have windows make restore points more often :P to do this :
right click my computer >properties > system restore and increase the ammount of disc space that is available for system restore points...
This should mean next time you can zip back to just before the problem.
Installing the same thing you did last time may sometimes recreate the problem that is why its important to watch what your computer is up to. so you can find the cause if it is a software problem its often something you can patch or change.
a more permanent fix is all ways preferable to one that might crop up again when the computer repeats.

This happened to me once too. I did that system restore thing but i was only thinking of Guildwars. I went back about a month lol and all this stuff on my computer uninstalled. LOL!
