RE: A file could not be opened

Ahm, how's your mom's diskspace doing? Errr, I mean her PC...

Seriously, check the usual suspects:

- Remaining Diskspace & Installation medium.

If you haven't got enough space, make some.
It might also be a corrupted file on the installation medium. if you install from CD, try doing it completely through the Update service 9will take ages, I know) or vise versa.

If you know which file it is, you could see about renaming it so the update process will grab a new one. It might also be useful to know which file it is, same one each time, or a different one?

Oh and what did Blizzard tech Support have to say?
I mean, it's nice of you to ask fellow gamers, but they are the professionals at this you know ;-)

RE: A file could not be opened

I have 72 gigs of free space

Their are similiar cases with Burning Crusades, and they told me to instal it from the Hard Drive, or run Windows XP in safe mode. Both didn't work.

Isn't their a client to download or something??

For PC: Main WoW Client Download

For Mac: Main WoW Client Download

Burning Crusade: Burning Crusade Download Page

WoW Support Page with all of the Links and information on Client Doanwload.

These will take quite a while to get installed, since you're downloading it all AND installing.

If Death takes me now I shall not fear, for I have lived and life is good.

RE: A file could not be opened

If you didn't get an error while copying the data from the disk, next the next thing you should try is to check your system RAM for problems.

Try a memory scan on your system using a program called HCI Memtest (http://hcidesign.com/memtest/). The program is small, is quite simple to use and is quite reliable for showing any possible memory problems.

Download the zip file to your computer and extract the program exe to your desktop. It does not need to be installed and simply runs when double-clicked. Press OK at the message prompt then click on the "Start Testing", another prompt will appear so click OK again.
For the purposes of this test make sure you close down all none essential programs, such as MSN, Windows Blinds etc.. and allow the program to complete 800-1000% coverage.

_____
Sounds like there could be a problem with your disk. This isn't a fix, but may be a good workaround

Hope one of those answers helps you

More Blue Posts:

If you're getting an error here, you can try installing from your hard disk instead of installing from the CDs.

1) Make a new folder on your desktop and call it WoWCDs
2) Insert the first World of Warcraft CD and if the Installer loads automatically exit it
3) Open the contents of the CD
4) Go to the Edit menu and choose Select all, so all the files are highlighted.
5) Go to the Edit menu and choose Copy then close the CD window
6) Open the new folder you created on your desktop
7) Go to the Edit menu and choose Paste so the files copy from the CD into this folder
8) If you are asked if you wish to replace existing files choose to replace them
9) Once this completes insert the next disc and repeat steps 2 to 8 to copy the files from all CDs

After this, open the WoWCDs folder and run the program Installer. Hopefully this should help.

Also

This sounds like there's a problem with the disc.

Probably the best thing to do would be to download from here:
http://www.wow-europe.com/en/burningcrusad...load/index.html

If, when the downloader asks where you want to save the files, you choose the place you copied your other CDs, it'll just download the part missing, saving you some download time.

Well something is wrong with your 5th disc. Look at the shiny side do you see any scratches or smudges or anything?? Use a cotton cloth and wipe it off going from the center-out. Do that to get the smudges off and if there is a really bad scratch that doesn't come off you probly can't do anything about it and need a new disc.

Try disabling your firewall and then logging in again. If that works you need to go into your firewall and tell it to bypass WoW.

P.s. Im glad you got WoW installed. =]

Yeah Cr3s is right it is 99% of the time your fire wall.

Glad it was a CD issue and not something with the computer itself!

Yay!!! It takes a lot of work but it was worth it right??

I recently had mucho problemo's with my WoW also. It kept getting an error (#131 - Corrupt files in Data) so I reinstalled it. Lo and behold, it wouldn't install! So I did the downloader, got the error again. After about 4 hours of talking to technical support on the phone, we figured out it was my RAM causing the problem. I had 2 different types in my computer. (Ya big owch) But it turns out the oddball piece of ram was only a 256 the 2 other pieces were 512 so I still have a gig left. But ya it was a major pain. Glad you got it working still!

RE: A file could not be opened

I too had problems with my pre-installed Norton Antivirus 2005 when trying to play WoW for the first time, nothing was loading and it took 10 minutes for the window to come up to say "Blah blah is trying to connect to a DNS server".

Probably worst version of Norton to be honest, occasionally it even blocked Internet Explorer from connecting to the internet ...

BUT! In the end I got too tired of that crap and installed Norton 2007, it works wonders.

And oh yeah, i'm back on Gameamp.. stupid Firefox and Internet Explorer blocking this place from loading...

(I'm using a damn proxy to come on here!)

P.s: Hi guys.
