Scrapper Primaries Vs. Secondaries

Hello, I am new to the community here, and I heve been playing my current COH account for three months (with maybe three more months on a previous account).

My main character is a lvl26 claws/reflex science scrapper. I have been speccing every secondary power that comes available, and have three power pools active (including: Hurdle, Combat Jumping, Super Jumping, and Hasten). I plan on speccing Stamina and Health when they come available.

My attacks are: Strike, Slash, Focus, and Spin. All six slots available except for Spin which has three slots available.

Practiced Brawler is slotted with enough recharge reduction to make it a permanent power, and if I have my way (once I've gotten Stamina), I will try to get enough recharge reductions to have hasten on permanent (if possible).

My question is: is it wise to focus most of my power choices in getting every available reflex secondary power while I only get four or five of the available claw primary powers? Or do I need to try and get more of those attack powers in? With hasten active it seems like I never run out of an attack power to click, but without Stamina I am quickly winded. I hope to aleviate this soon, but am I missing anything really that earth shattering by skipping other claw primary powers?

Thanks for your advice, and I'm sorry if this has already been asked a million times, but I just started this account and was eager to ask and announce my pressence here on these boards :)

Hello Fitz and welcome to the community!

You'll prolly hear this a lot, but it really depends on your play style. If you feel comfortable and the build fits your style and you're happy, then you're doing well. I actually skipped a couple attacks on by BS/Regen Scrapper. One of my friends thought I was crazy, but I took him to 50 and still love playing that toon.

Don't forget, you can always Respec out of your powers if you don't like them. And you can always look for a guide someone wrote in the guide section. Just do what you think works for you.

If your toon is already level 26, then by now (in my honest opinion) you should already have Stamina. Claws' attacks may not be heavy on endurance, but you still run out pretty fast because they are really quick on the recharge. Couple that with Super Reflexes' toggles, and you're out of endurance in seconds.

If you're level 26, you should've taken Eviscerate already (level 26).

Getting enough recharge reduction without purple IO sets (the super rare ones) is near impossible. If you do try, it'll cost you hundreds of millions of inf. I wouldn't try, because it's virtually impossible.

My question is: is it wise to focus most of my power choices in getting every available reflex secondary power while I only get four or five of the available claw primary powers?

No. Unless you try to PvP. I personally wouldn't take the auto powers (Dodge, Agile and Lucky) till the higher levels.

You're missing the earth shatteringly amazing Eviscerate. Although you may always have an attack to use when Hasten is up, Hasten simply isn't up all the time and having some powerful attacks (Eviscerate, Focus) will really help.

We've all had that... and no need to be sorry. If you need help, just ask, and we will help as much as we can!

Also, for some help on the Claws powerset, I direct you to my Claws/Regeneration Scrapper guide, which can be found right here.

RE: Scrapper Primaries Vs. Secondaries

Thanks for the replies.

I was planning to get Eviserate soon, missed it at 26 because for some reason I forgot to get hurdle durring my last freespec and it was driving me nutz how gimped my leaping was without it.

I also missed Stamina for the same reason, well mainly because I just picked up Hurdle again. When I'm able to complete the respec trial I'll be sure to get both Eviserate and Stamina earlier down those trees.

I hope to get a group together this weekend to complete that trial, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Mostly its all due to poor planning durring both my original spec and my last freespec. I do really enjoy all of the added defences that reflex has though, so when I do respec, I'll probably still keep all of those since they match my gameplay perfectly and I rarely take any significant damage unless I've really bitten off more than I can chew.

For my next respec (assuming that I make it through the trial), Which attacks should I focus on? I take it that Eviserate is the bread and butter of the claws set, but what other powers compliment it?

I do like the idea of Follow up (doesn't it increase both damage and accuracy of your next attack?), and the defense reduction to targets caused by slash is a big bonus.

Should I still keep spin? It's fun and great to widdle down those hordes of minions surrounding me, but that attack really does a toll on my end, and in team battles I'm not sure if I'm making the tank and healer's jobs tougher by grabbing tons of aggro with this attack.

Are there any other powers in the claws set that I'm overlooking to my peril, or an I good with Eviserate, Follow up, Strike, and Slash?

I know that I'm asking alot of questions, but I would like any advice that you guys are willing to provide.

Thanks in advance, and "For Justice!"

EDIT: Oops I just noticed that Aurius mentioned Focus instead of Follow up, let's take a look at that one...

...Huh, looks like a short range attack that causes huge dmg and KB, looks interesting, I might consider this one if I find a spot for it once it comes available.

My take on it. Probably not the best build. I've never been fond of the "uber" defense powers.

RE: Scrapper Primaries Vs. Secondaries

First of all, I gotta toss you respect for gettin to 26 without as many attacks. Favoring your defenses so much is astounding to me, and I feel it's admirable of you that you managed it thus far. Now the goal is to make your life a lil bit easier. =D

I've worked up a build that is rather on the expensive side for somethings, but rather cheap for others. Yes, it has 5 LotG recharges in it, but those can be added once you have the money. The majority of this build is rather on the cheaper end of the spectrum. The most expensive aspects are on the whole unnecessary outside of a PvP scenario, or simple want of perfection.

This build puts off Hasten until level 49. The reason being that between quickness and the inherent speed of the Claws set, you won't *need* Hasten until late, and only then as a way to increase your DPS against AVs and the like. The setup puts off your auto powers for a lil while, but it does eventually take all 3 of the auto defense powers. The reason behind this is not that they give defense. Their defense bonus is meager at best. What they *do* for you, however, is give scaling damage resistance to all damage types based on your HP. The more damage you take, the more resistance you get and the greater your chances of survival.

I tried to focus on the rather cheap sets, things you can throw together as you level up. The level of the enhancements is not a major factor, if you start slotting IOs in around lvl 35 or so, you'll be close enough to capping the important attributes, such as damage or defense, that it won't make a difference whether its a lvl 35 IO or a lvl 50 IO. I do advise you to work on one power at a time, to get the better set bonuses sooner. IO out one power, then move on to the next, and so on and so forth. The really expensive IOs won't be nearly as necessary any time soon, so put them off until you have the less expensive things taken care of.

Lastly, if you want advice as to how to slot this build with SOs, please feel free to ask. It takes me a matter of minutes to flip enhancements around and post the build without IOs.

Here's the build:
