I'm curious about the progression of our(the GW community) laziness in typing.
How DID "q" become the accepted abbreviation for requirement? "Req" I can understand, but "q"? Is typing those other two letters stressing our fingers SO much or are people that lazy that they can't be bothered by hitting those other two keys?(they are on the same row)
I could even understand "r" as most acronyms come from the first letter of a series of words, but 'q'?
Did this progress. like so much "leet" speak as a typo, that someone thought "ZOMG!!! that's KUL! I can save myself 2 keystokes!!! my laziness is increased!"

i dont think its anything to do with lazyness at all. people who type stuff in gw just do it because its quicker. like those dudes in the courtroom use shorthand. they dont do it because theyre lazy, just because its quicker and easier to use.
to say that people in gw are getting lazy is to also say that the person is lazy in general. to say that they cant be bothered to use the extra 2 keystrokes makes you think that in rl they would do the same, where as it could be the complete opposite.
when i find something funny in gw i usually just type 'haha' instead of 'lol'. but i dont think the person who uses one keystroke less is any lazier, its just what they prefer.
... 'imo' :P

It's used for the party search where you need every character you can get.
R is sometimes mistaken for Rank so q is generally accepted.

If you're describing a weapon, how can it be mistaken for rank? That would be awesome though - imagine yourself running along and suddenly your req 9 sword /fame's and some tiger pops out of your weapon.

N we rnt 2 l-z 2 type things out all da way. Sumtimes its just ez-er and fastr 2 abrv things.
Wow it took more thought for me to figure out to type then it if I had just typed it normal. LOL!!!!

Well I guess abbreviations could be used in situations like HA and GVG, although everyone uses Vent or TS for that.
Also note that we use them cause of the fairly limited amount we can type in our chats, so with abbreviations you can for example sell more stuff in one line than to spam the whole chat full.
R is indeed generally used for Rank, and there are people stupid enough to think that "WTS Elemental Sword R13..." would indeed mean Rank 13 and not Requires 13 Sword Mastery.

i always use 'req'
i used 'q' for Quest.
imagine a phone..i mean imagine an AB battle, and a guild mate whisps you to help him with something. but you're a bit busy. try typing this while you are in the midst of a fight;
Hey there, i would love to help but i'm busy with Alliance Battle at the moment. Try to finish that quest yourself first with some henchmen.
much easier would be; Hey, soz busy with AB atm. Try to h/h the q.

Yeah we're lazy, I'm probably the laziest person you'll meet. Hell I just got up and it's 3 PM. But never when it comes to typing. I've been thinking to same thing as you. I get on AIM even and my friends type like they're fxing retarded. I can hardly read it sometimes.

It just depends on who you are. Yes a lot of people abvrievate, but sometimes its for GvG and Ha they might have vent and ts but they might not have a mic so they have to type something really fast so that their teamates will read what they have to say. You also have the sellers that abvrievate what they are selling. Then you have the people that are just lazy and don't feel like typing the whole thing. Like I said before it just depends on the person you are.

I don't think laziness is the whole of the thing.
It's part of it. Shortening four letter Faction name "Cora" to "Cor" (in RF Online, I mean Rising Force Online) really is just laziness for instance. I don't consider myself a lazy chatter/typer, but I do use 'afaik' and 'imo' or 'DPS'.
Correct spelling would have us type out in full every number under twenty, I don't think anyone even considers it laziness when you don't do that in game chat, and i18n * makes sense to just about everyone who knows what it means.
But there's other factors:
Need for Speed as mentioned before. Sometimes you need to get something out fast, then typing U in stead of you makes sense. Bits of SMS lingo drifting over plays a role too.
Further, 'jargonized' terms like LFG and PUG are more character based Icons than abbreviations at this point. Same with WOW, it's more of a name than an abbreviation. GW remains more of an abbreviation, probably due to less ease-of-pronounciation.
The factor I think plays an underappreciated, big role is a bit of elitism. It's fun being part of the in-crowd that knows the specialized jargon and abbreviatons that define the scene. Calling Newbs those who don't know the latest term or ICA **.

Interesting. I can read about 5 times as fast as the average person can speak. Average is 3 times, I read a lot. And that's without the delay due to people having to repeat what they said because they were shouting and distorted their voice. So, if speed is first and last and always, everybody should do a typing class and throw out the mics :-)

I actually think it is a result of the text messaging world that has seeped into gaming. lol I have a guildmate that abbreviates everything...and I mean everything. lol A lot of the time my husband and I need to get a translation cause we just can't figure it out. lol He is 16 and admitted he texts over 3000 whatever they count a month. Crazy huh? I have tried texting once on my phone and it drove me batty..that and it ate a lot of my battery life. lol I only have a pre-pay phone for emergencies so don't even go there about that. lol

i text ALOT, i mean ALOT. My bill last month ran over $800 just from AIM on my phone and texting. But I still don't bring it into gaming by abbreviating everything. If i can type stuff out I mostly will(unlike "cuz" and some others).
